A mechanical watch’s rate can change with how it is wound, worn, stored, and exposed to its surroundings. To check its everyday accuracy, compare it with a reliable time reference at the same time each day for about a week to ten days, then divide the total seconds gained or lost by the number of days. A single day is not enough to judge its usual performance.

Why a mechanical watch gains or loses time

A mechanical movement is powered by a mainspring that gradually unwinds. Its rate—the amount it gains or loses over time—can vary as the watch’s operating conditions change. Seiko and Grand Seiko identify winding state, wrist movement, temperature, and position among the factors that affect accuracy; shocks and magnetism can also affect performance. Seiko explains the factors that affect mechanical-watch accuracy, while Grand Seiko describes accuracy considerations for its mechanical watches.

Winding and daily activity

A watch’s rate can vary with how fully wound it is and how much it moves on the wrist. For a meaningful everyday check, wear and wind it in a reasonably consistent way rather than changing your routine specifically to influence the result.

Position and gravity

A mechanical watch may run at different rates in different orientations. This matters both while wearing it and when leaving it off the wrist. A watch that gains during the day may behave differently resting overnight, but the result depends on the individual watch.

Temperature

Temperature changes affect the movement’s components. Seiko advises that high temperatures normally tend toward time loss and low temperatures toward gain, and recommends avoiding temperatures below 5°C or above 35°C. Treat that as Seiko’s guidance, not a universal rule for every watch or caliber.

Shock and magnetism

A shock can affect a movement’s performance. Magnetism can also adversely affect a watch and may continue to do so after it has been moved away from the source. Seiko lists possible nearby sources such as speakers, phones, tablet covers, handbag clasps, hair dryers, and electric razors. Being near one of these objects does not prove that the watch has become magnetized.

How to check accuracy during normal wear

Seiko says to assess a mechanical watch by the average of its daily rates across one week or ten days of actual wear; Grand Seiko recommends roughly a week to ten days for normal-use accuracy as well. The following simple tracking method applies that guidance. It is a practical check of your own use, not a laboratory certification test.

  1. Choose a reliable reference. Use a dependable time source and compare the watch against it at the same time each day.
  2. Set a starting point. Note whether the watch is ahead or behind the reference at the first comparison.
  3. Wear and wind it consistently. Keep your ordinary routine as steady as practical, and note unusual changes such as leaving the watch unworn, an atypical temperature exposure, or a shock.
  4. Record the difference daily. At each comparison, write down the watch’s accumulated gain or loss relative to the reference.
  5. Calculate the average daily rate. At the end of about seven to ten days, divide the total seconds gained or lost by the number of days. For example, a total gain of 42 seconds over seven days is an average gain of 6 seconds per day.

The average is more useful than the result from one day because the rate can change with use and environment. Keep notes on whether the watch was worn or resting and whether winding was consistent; those details help explain the result.

How resting position can affect the result

To see how the watch behaves off the wrist, compare its rate in different resting positions. Seiko suggests leaving it in each position for 7 to 8 hours and comparing the change. Keep the duration and comparison method consistent for each position, and record the result.

A resting position may partly offset the rate you observe while wearing the watch. This is a way to learn how your individual watch behaves, not a mechanical adjustment or a guarantee that it will keep a particular rate.

Normal-wear tracking versus a timegrapher

These approaches answer different questions: one measures the result you experience over time; the other takes a short-term reading under test conditions.

Approach What it tells you What it does not establish
Normal-wear rate tracking Average seconds gained or lost per day over about a week or more of your usual wear. It does not diagnose the movement’s internal condition.
Timegrapher measurement An estimate of rate and movement-related readings such as amplitude and beat error, usually in a particular position and winding state. A short test does not by itself establish normal-wear accuracy or a service diagnosis.

What a timegrapher measures

A timegrapher analyzes the sound of the ticking to estimate rate, amplitude, and beat error. The reading depends on the sound signal, winding state, test position, and appropriate instrument settings. A quiet location and a fully wound watch can help produce a more useful signal, but the result remains a snapshot of those test conditions. The timegrapher guide describes the signal and test-condition considerations; Witschi’s timing-machine accessories and software information describes timing-machine measurements.

  • Easy to use for mechanical watch collection. This watch tester automatically calculates rate, amplitude, and beat error using readings from the microphone stand.
  • LCD screen displayed.According to different watches, the instrument will automatically adjust optimal signal level during testing. - The LCD screen shows the readings in real time with 2 dotted lines moving across the screen to provide a visual representation of the “tic tock” from your watch
  • 6 kinds of testing position can be adjusted. Amplitude level is between 275 and 315; Rate Deviation Range: ±999 s/d with precision ± 1 s/d'
  • The sampling period can selected by 2 , 4 , 6 , 8 , 10, 20, 30 , 60 seconds, and the average of corresponding period will be regard as the precise value of the watch.

How to interpret the number

There is no single acceptable daily rate for every mechanical watch. Use the specification for your particular brand and caliber; do not treat another maker’s target as a general tolerance.

For example, Grand Seiko states normal-use target values of -1 to +10 seconds per day for the calibers covered by its general figure, -1 to +8 seconds per day for calibers 9S86 and 9S85, and -5 to +10 seconds per day for caliber 9S27. These are Grand Seiko targets only. Its described movement test is different from a wearer’s check: it tests a movement for 17 days in six positions and three temperatures. Grand Seiko’s accuracy guidance gives these targets and explains its testing approach.

Compare your multi-day average with the specification applicable to your own watch, while keeping in mind that daily rates can vary. If the average is troubling, inconsistent, or markedly outside the maker’s stated range, contact the brand’s authorized service channel. Seiko recommends an Authorized Seiko Service Center or appointed dealer for accuracy concerns. Do not open the case or attempt to move the regulator as a casual first step. Seiko’s FAQ provides its service guidance.
