Originality is not a simple genuine-or-fake label. A watch may be made up of authentic Rolex components and still differ from its original delivered configuration because parts were replaced during servicing or later handling. A replacement part is not automatically counterfeit; the relevant questions are what it is, whether it is consistent with the model and period, and whether its history is understood.

Assess components in relation to one another. For example, compare the dial’s luminous material with the hands rather than judging either in isolation. Look for a coherent relationship among the bezel, crystal, case finish, engravings, bracelet, and movement. A mismatch can point to a service replacement or later alteration, but visual inconsistency by itself does not prove fraud.
How to inspect a watch before buying
1. Identify the reference and period
Start by establishing the model and reference, then use the watch’s serial details and other production clues to estimate its period. This gives you a basis for checking whether its components and configuration make sense. Do this before comparing prices: a similar-looking watch from another reference or period is not necessarily a useful value comparison.

2. Examine visible components together
Stahl recommends a 10× loupe to inspect small details and finishing. Use it to look closely at the dial, hands, luminous material, bezel, crystal, engravings, and case surfaces. Treat magnification as a way to see more clearly—not as proof of authenticity. Consider whether wear and condition are plausible across the watch, including whether the hands and dial appear to belong together.

3. Assess the case and signs of service
Check the sharpness and finish of the case, as polishing can alter edges and surfaces. Look for service marks and evidence of replaced parts, and ask what documentation or service history the seller can provide. Stahl’s approach is to interpret such clues as part of the watch’s history, rather than assuming every intervention has the same significance.

4. Seek a specialist’s view where appropriate
A loupe and a checklist can help you identify questions, but they cannot settle every question of authenticity or service history. Consult a knowledgeable watchmaker or vintage Rolex specialist if a purchase depends on a detail you cannot verify. Stahl also recommends examining auction lots in person when possible and, where permitted, asking a watchmaker to open the case back.

- Reference and period: confirm the model and production clues.
- Originality and service history: distinguish the present configuration from the watch’s original delivered configuration where possible.
- Case condition: consider sharpness, finishing, and signs of polishing.
- Dial, hands, and luminous material: assess their condition and whether they appear coherent together.
- Bracelet and other components: check what is present and how it fits the watch’s reference and history.
- Provenance and documentation: consider the evidence supporting ownership and service claims.
- Total cost: include auction buyer’s premiums and other applicable fees, not just the hammer price.
For market research, Stahl recommends comparing appropriate auction results after identifying the watch and assessing its originality and condition. Auction results are historical evidence, not a guarantee of current value; prices can change, and differences in condition or configuration matter. If you bid, account for the buyer’s premium in the amount you will actually pay.

Two related publications are distinct works. The Vintage Rolex Field Manual is described in an excerpt as a practical collector reference focused on references, product lines, wear, and age; the excerpt also notes that its information draws on secondary sources and may contain errors. The Rolex Guide by Mads Urup Gjødesen is a separate physical guide published by Helmin Publishing on December 16, 2025. Simon & Schuster lists 370 pages and ISBN 9788794190343; its description covers buying risks and analysis of dials, cases, bracelets, and steel sports models from 1960–2024. Neither title is the Philipp Stahl article.
