To restart a stopped Breguet Marine 5517, unscrew the crown, pull it to X2, wind upward 30 times, then press and screw it back into X1. The automatic movement winds itself while you wear it; when fully wound and left unworn, it runs for about 55 hours. Correct crown use matters for setting the watch and maintaining its stated water resistance.
Wind a stopped Marine 5517
- Turn the crown downward to unscrew it from X1.
- Pull the crown to X2, the winding position.
- Turn the crown upward 30 times to wind the stopped watch. Breguet gives this model-specific count in its Marine 5517 Instructions for Use.
- Press the crown inward and screw it upward until fully secured in X1.
- Wear the watch to replenish its reserve through automatic winding.
Breguet describes the Marine 5517 as a self-winding mechanical watch. Its product specifications identify caliber 777A and a 55-hour power reserve; the manual likewise says a fully wound watch left unworn stops after about 55 hours. That is an approximate reserve, not a recommended interval for winding.

Set the time
- Unscrew the crown and pull it to X4.
- Stop the seconds hand when it reaches 12 o’clock.
- Advance the hands until the date changes at midnight. This establishes which half of the day the watch is indicating.
- Move the hands forward to the desired time. For an afternoon time, pass noon first. For a precise setting, make the final rotation clockwise.
- Push the crown to X2, hold it in, and screw it securely back to X1.
Correct the date safely
Do not use the quick date correction when the watch displays between 20:00 and 01:00. If you cannot tell whether the hands show morning or afternoon, advance them through the date change to 01:00 before correcting the date.
- Unscrew the crown and pull it to X3.
- Turn the crown downward until the correct date appears.
- Push the crown to X2, then screw it securely back into X1.
What the 10 bar water-resistance rating means
Breguet states water resistance of 10 bar (100 m) for the Marine 5517 when its crown is screwed into X1. This is the manufacturer’s rating under the specified crown condition—not a guarantee for every activity or for a watch whose seals have aged or been damaged by impact. Before water exposure, check that the crown is fully pushed in and screw-locked.

If the watch is used for water sports or is regularly exposed to water or moisture, Breguet recommends an annual water-resistance check by an authorized dealer. Condensation beneath the crystal warrants contacting a Breguet boutique or authorized dealer.
Protect it from magnetism and avoid risky DIY work
Breguet advises keeping the watch away from strong magnetic fields. Potential sources include magnetic phone cases, tablets and laptops, wireless chargers, headphones and speakers, induction cooktops, electric motors, and magnetic clasps on bags or bracelets. If the watch suddenly runs fast, or stops after running fast, Breguet says magnetization may be the cause and advises authorized service.

The 5517 product page lists a flat silicon balance spring, but that component is not a reason to treat the watch as immune to magnetism; Breguet’s general precautions still apply. Avoid opening the case or attempting repairs with generic tools.

Service intervals and what a complete service can involve
Breguet recommends a complete service every 5 to 8 years. Its complete maintenance service description includes movement disassembly and cleaning, inspection and replacement of worn components with original parts, reassembly and lubrication, rate adjustment and parameter checks, gasket replacement, and final functional and aesthetic checks. Case or metal-bracelet refinishing may also be part of the process. The exact work depends on the model, condition, and requirements; not every listed intervention necessarily applies to every watch.

Breguet says a service may carry a five-year service warranty, subject to applicable conditions. For maintenance or repair, it directs owners to recommended service centers, a Breguet boutique, a Tourbillon boutique, or an official retailer. A watch winder is not necessary for ordinary ownership. Breguet’s FAQ recommends manually fully winding a watch before placing it in a winding mechanism and says a retailer can advise on the model-specific winding direction and minimum daily turns. It does not state a specific winder direction or daily setting for the Marine 5517.

The Marine 5517 family has multiple references with differing case and strap or bracelet configurations. The official page for reference 5517BB/Y2/5ZU lists a 40 mm case, 22 mm lug width, caliber 777A, and its specific strap configuration; do not assume those details or strap compatibility apply to every 5517. Check the exact reference and configuration before ordering a strap or bracelet.
