To restart a stopped mechanical watch, identify its movement, follow that movement’s manual for winding, then set the time and date as directed. If the crown screws down, unscrew it gently first and screw it back down when finished. There is no safe universal winding count or date-setting position: both depend on the watch.
Before winding: identify the movement and crown
Check the watch’s manual or manufacturer support page for its movement or caliber number. Determine whether it is automatic or hand-wound, and whether its crown screws down. Winding direction, crown positions, winding guidance and date-setting instructions vary among movements; instructions for one caliber should not be assumed to apply to another.

If the crown screws down, unscrew it as the manual describes before winding or setting. If it resists, do not force it. Once you have finished, return the crown to its normal position and screw it down as instructed.

For a concrete example, Seiko’s 2R05/2R06 instructions say to wind the stopped watch by turning the crown or, for that movement, swinging the watch from side to side until the seconds hand starts. The manual advises setting the time and date before putting it on the wrist. Its swinging advice is specific to those calibers, not a general instruction for all mechanical watches.

A watch that has run down may need some winding before it starts. Follow the manual’s method and stop if the crown feels abnormal or resists; do not force it. Seiko’s 5R65 instructions, for example, recommend manually winding the mainspring when first using a stopped watch.
Why winding counts are not universal
Use the movement’s stated guidance rather than a generic count such as “20 turns.” Seiko specifies that five full crown rotations give approximately ten hours of running time for the 5R65. Its 2R05/2R06 instructions state that a fully wound watch runs for about 40 hours. These are manufacturer figures for those movements, not a shared rule or a comparative test.

Set the time and date safely
After the watch starts, use the crown positions and sequence in its manual to set the time and, if present, the date. Date-setting restrictions differ by movement. For example, the Seiko 4R35/4R36 manual warns not to adjust the date between 9:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. That window applies to the specified movements; check your own manual rather than treating it as universal.
When setting is complete, return the crown to its normal position. If it is screw-down, lock it as the manufacturer directs, without cross-threading or forcing it.

If the watch still does not run
Confirm that you followed the manual for the exact movement and crown type.
