With the crown pushed in, turn it clockwise to wind the watch. To set the time, pull the crown out one position, turn the hands to the correct time, then push the crown back in. Timex’s W-231 instructions describe this procedure for an automatic-style watch; check your exact Marlin reference for any different crown functions or date-setting instructions.
How to wind and set the time
- Take the watch off. Timex recommends removing an automatic watch before winding so you can handle the crown comfortably. Timex’s winding guide
- Wind with the crown pushed in. This is position 1 in the W-231 instructions. Turn the crown clockwise. Timex’s general guide advises stopping when you feel resistance; for the TW2V44600 specifically, Timex says to wind until resistance if the watch has been motionless for more than 40 hours. Do not force the crown. TW2V44600 product page Timex instruction manuals
- Set the time. Pull the crown out one click to position 2. Turn the hands until they show the correct time. The W-231 guide documents this time-setting procedure. Timex instruction manuals
- Restart the watch. Push the crown all the way back in. The watch resumes running.
Why an automatic watch needs winding
An automatic watch stores energy in its mainspring. As you wear it, wrist movement turns an internal rotor, which winds the spring; hand-winding through the crown can provide a boost when needed. Timex explains this mechanism in its automatic-watch winding guide, published August 12, 2024.

What to check for your particular Marlin
Power reserve varies by reference
Timex lists approximately 40 hours of stored energy for the Marlin Automatic TW2V44600. That figure is specific to that model, not a stated reserve for every Marlin Automatic. If your watch stops, wind it and set the time, then wear it so wrist movement can supply energy. TW2V44600 product page
Date and other functions
The W-231 instructions establish how to wind and set the time, but not a universal date-setting method for all Marlin Automatic watches. Check the manual for your exact reference before changing a date or another complication. Search Timex’s instruction manuals and user guides by watch name or product number.
