The reserve varies by model, so check the watch’s manual for how long yours should run and how to restart it.
Why an automatic watch stops off your wrist
A moving rotor inside an automatic watch winds the mainspring as you wear it. Once the watch is off your wrist, it no longer receives that regular winding, so it eventually stops when its stored energy runs down. Rolex explains how its rotor and winding system work in its watch-care guidance; Citizen also explains that off-wrist running time depends on the watch’s reserve in its automatic-watch FAQ.

There is no single power-reserve figure for all automatic watches. Manufacturer-published examples vary: Patek Philippe lists 38–48 hours for its self-winding movements, with exceptions; TAG Heuer gives 40–70 hours for its watches; and CHANEL lists 38–70 hours depending on model. These are brand-specific ranges, not a prediction for any particular watch. Check the specification for your exact model or caliber.

| Manufacturer | Published reserve information | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Patek Philippe | 38–48 hours for self-winding movements, with exceptions | Watch-care recommendations |
| TAG Heuer | 40–70 hours for its watches | Maintenance guidance |
| CHANEL | 38–70 hours, depending on model | Watch care |
How to restart it safely
Use the winding and setting procedure in the manual for your exact watch. The correct crown position, winding direction and number of turns can differ by model. If the crown screws down, follow the manual’s steps for unscrewing it before winding and securing it afterward.
#1 Best Overall
- Premium Carbon Fiber Leather Construction - Crafted from carbon fiber leather, durable MDF, and clear acrylic glass, this single watch winder offers lasting protection with a refined, modern look. It keeps your automatic watch securely displayed while adding a premium touch to your bedroom, office, or dresser.
- Quiet and Anti-Magnetic Japanese Motor - Equipped with a Japanese ultra-quiet motor, this watch winder operates smoothly with low noise for a more comfortable day and night experience. The anti-magnetic design helps protect your watch movement from magnetic interference and supports accurate performance over time.
- Dual Power Supply with Adjustable Pillow - Power this automatic watch winder with a USB-C cable or 2 AA batteries not included for flexible use at home or while traveling. The adjustable pillow is designed to fit a wide range of watch sizes, making it suitable for both men’s and women’s watches.
- Preset Rotation Cycle for Balanced Winding - This watch winder operates in a preset cycle of clockwise rotation for 2 minutes, rest for 6 minutes, counterclockwise rotation for 2 minutes, and rest for 6 minutes. This balanced rotation pattern helps keep your automatic watch wound while avoiding unnecessary continuous movement. For best results, manually wind the crown 20 to 40 turns before placing your watch in the winder to help prevent stoppage.
- Stylish Gift for Watch Lovers - With its modern design and practical function, this single watch winder makes a thoughtful gift for watch lovers, collectors, husbands, fathers, and friends. It is a great choice for birthdays, anniversaries, Father’s Day, Christmas, and other special occasions.
Brand instructions illustrate why a universal turn count is unreliable: Rolex specifies at least 25 turns for an adequate partial wind of its stopped watches, while TAG Heuer gives roughly 30–40 clockwise turns for its mechanical watches. Those are instructions for those brands, not general rules. See Rolex’s winding guidance and TAG Heuer’s maintenance instructions.
- Find the instructions for your model or movement.
- If the crown screws down, release it as directed by the manufacturer.
- Wind in the specified direction and by the specified amount; do not substitute another brand’s winding count.
- Set the time and date as the manual directs, then secure the crown if applicable.
Keeping it ready between wears
You can wear the watch regularly, wind and reset it when you want to use it, or use a compatible watch winder for convenience. A winder is optional: the reserve running out by itself is not a reason the watch needs one. TAG Heuer discusses manual winding or a winder for a watch that is not regularly worn in its care FAQ, and Mühle-Glashütte describes winders as a storage convenience in its wearing and care recommendations.

- ELEGANT CARBON FIBER DESIGN: Made of high-quality PU leather with a transparent acrylic window. The smooth PU leather interior reliably protects your mechanical watches from scratches. A stylish eye-catcher and the perfect presentation for your valuable watch collection.
- IMPORTANT SIZE COMPATIBILITY (PLEASE CHECK): To ensure smooth operation and prevent motor damage, this dual watch winder is designed for watches with the following maximum dimensions: Dial diameter under 47 mm, case thickness under 28 mm, and strap circumference under 175-195 mm. It can accommodate large watches, but cannot simultaneously hold two mechanical watches with a dial diameter of 58 mm with crown. Please measure your watch before purchasing.
- OPERATING PRINCIPLE: A watch winder serves exclusively to maintain the power reserve and simulates the natural movement of the wrist. It CANNOT wind a completely stopped watch from zero. Important: Please manually wind the crown of your watch approx 20-40 times before placing it in the winder. It CANNOT start or wind a completely stopped watch from zero. We also recommend manually checking the time once a week.
- INTELLIGENT INTERVAL ROTATION: Programmed with pauses to prevent over-winding. Mode B: 2 min clockwise, 6 min pause, 2 min counterclockwise. Mode L: 2 min counterclockwise, 18 min pause, 2 min clockwise. (If you see the winder rotate and then stop, this is the programmed pause — NOT a malfunction. Please wait through the full pause period (6 min for Mode B, 18 min for Mode L) )You can switch the device off when not in use.(Speed: 970-2430 TPD. Automatic watches only. NOT for Quartz, Seiko Kinetic, or Citizen Eco-Drive).
- CONSTANT POWER SUPPLY (NO BATTERY): Please note that this device does not have a built-in battery and must be permanently connected to a power source (3V~9V, 0.5A) during operation. A connection cable is included (power adapter NOT included). Multiple watch winders can be conveniently connected in series via the cable to save space and power outlets.
Before choosing a winder, check whether it is compatible with your movement and consider whether keeping the watch running is worth the added convenience compared with resetting it when you wear it. Follow the watch manufacturer’s instructions for winding and storage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen stopping may indicate a problem
A watch that repeatedly stops well before its stated power reserve, or stops while you are wearing it, merits attention. First wind it as the manual directs, then note how long it runs undisturbed. If the result is repeatedly far below the model’s specification, contact the manufacturer or a qualified authorized watchmaker. There is no single diagnostic time threshold that applies to every caliber. Avoid repeatedly shaking the watch or opening its case as a first response; Seiko’s movement troubleshooting guidance includes repair or overhaul advice for stopping problems, and Rolex provides service guidance.

Cleaning and routine service
Clean according to the watch’s construction
Follow the model’s cleaning directions and account for its water resistance and seal condition. Rolex recommends cleaning its case and bracelet with soapy water and a soft brush only after ensuring the winding crown is screwed down. Do not apply that procedure to a watch with uncertain water resistance or different construction; see the Rolex care FAQ for its model-specific guidance.
Use the manufacturer’s service schedule
Service intervals depend on the brand and watch. Patek Philippe recommends service every eight to ten years for its mechanical watches, while TAG Heuer recommends approximately five to six years for its watches and water-resistance testing every two years for watches worn in water. These are brand recommendations, not a universal schedule; consult the guidance for your model and arrange an assessment sooner if the watch malfunctions. See Patek Philippe’s recommendations and TAG Heuer’s maintenance guidance.
