It pairs a 43 mm steel case with a Sellita SW360-1 movement and an unusual strap channel that accepts 20 mm straps. Its often-quoted CHF 1,350 preorder price was published at launch in 2021; it is not a confirmed current price.
What is the Ianos Mihanikos?
The Mihanikos is Ianos’s second diver, following the Avyssos. The brand describes it as a utilitarian watch inspired by the scaphandre suit and the industrialization of Greek sponge diving. Its design is a cultural interpretation rather than a claim to reproduce diving equipment.
Ianos calls it “our second diver” on its official product page. The dial and case details carry the story: a wide bezel meant to suggest a porthole, a dark blue dial associated with the Mediterranean, and a small-seconds display at six styled after the air pumps used to supply divers in suits. Sponge-like luminous hour markers and a date integrated at 12 continue the theme. Lyrics from a Mihanikos song are engraved on the dial flange; Ianos translates a line as “and if I die, don’t cry for me, bury me in the sand.”
The bezel has few markings. Ianos’s explanation is that suit divers focused on hours on the sea floor rather than counting minutes. That is the brand’s design rationale, not a substitute for the clear elapsed-minute scale many divers expect from a conventional dive watch. Historical accounts of the work and its risks should not be read as establishing a specific depth or mortality figure for this watch’s inspiration.

Do not confuse the original Mihanikos with the later Ianos × Chronopassion collaboration. Fratello reported in July 2023 that the collaboration comprised 30 numbered pieces, with a gray dial and related case architecture, at €2,900 including VAT. That collaboration price and edition size do not establish the value or availability of the original model.

How it wears and what to consider
At 43 mm wide, 50.84 mm lug-to-lug and 15.75 mm thick, the Mihanikos is substantial on paper. Those numbers can help screen for fit, but wrist shape and comfort vary, so dimensions cannot replace trying it on. Fratello’s reviewer described the thickness as noticeable and found that the channel and fixed bars affected strap choice; those are that reviewer’s impressions, not universal fit judgments.
The channel gives the watch a distinctive profile and supports Ianos’s single-pass strap concept, but it also makes strap compatibility less straightforward than on a watch with ordinary removable spring bars. Check the bar arrangement and the intended strap’s construction before buying an alternative.

Strap options
Ianos lists an Italian leather single-pass strap with a coated underside intended to support water use and aging, a customized Italian rubber single-pass strap with a sponge pattern, and a 316L pin buckle. These are manufacturer descriptions; they do not establish that the leather strap is suitable for sustained immersion. The 20 mm width alone is not enough to guarantee fit with the Mihanikos’s fixed-bar and channel setup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is it a good dive watch?
The Mihanikos combines a manufacturer-stated 300 m / 30 ATM rating, screw-down crown, sapphire crystal and unidirectional bezel with a distinctive historical design. Its unusual small seconds and minimally marked bezel are central to that design, but they make it less conventional as a timing-focused diver: the dial does not provide the prominent minute markings many divers use to read elapsed time at a glance.
Recommended Free Tools
Fratello’s reviewer argued that the lack of minute markers meant it did not qualify as a “true divers’ watch.” That is the reviewer’s assessment, not an independently verified certification ruling. The practical choice depends on whether the buyer prioritizes the Mihanikos’s theme and construction or a clearer elapsed-time scale for dive timing. The sources cited here do not establish compliance with a named dive-watch standard.
