The genuine watch was returned after a confrontation, so the $140,000 headline does not describe a completed loss. The account offers a practical lesson for collectors: trust signals are no substitute for keeping track of every watch and checking its identifying details.
What happened in the reported watch-swap attempt
Luke Benedictus’s 4 June 2021 report in Time+Tide Watches recounts Singapore watch collector and trader Gautaman Senivasan’s account. A prospective buyer first contacted him about an F.P. Journe Chronomètre Bleu. The buyer seemed credible to Senivasan after a forum reference check, talked about expensive watches, and later visited his home to view several pieces. During that visit, the buyer completed a bank transfer for an IWC Pilot XVIII.
While Senivasan briefly left the room to get drinks, the buyer had access to the watches. Senivasan later noticed that his Nautilus felt heavier than he remembered, familiar bezel marks were missing, and the clasp felt different. Comparing the serial number with the papers confirmed that the watch in his hand was not his original. In the account, the buyer had hidden the genuine Nautilus in his bag and substituted a high-grade replica. After Senivasan confronted him, the buyer returned the genuine watch; Senivasan chose not to involve police.
These details come from Senivasan’s recollection as reported by Benedictus, not an independently verified court finding. The report describes an attempted substitution and recovery, not a $140,000 loss. It is an anecdote, not evidence of how often this kind of scam occurs.

How to reduce the risk when showing a watch
Senivasan’s advice is aimed at sellers arranging private viewings. It focuses on knowing the watch, checking its identity, and maintaining control of the pieces while they are out of their boxes.
Document the watch before the meeting
Know the condition of each watch you intend to show. Photograph existing marks and scratches, and record the reference and serial numbers along with the box and papers. Familiarity with the watch’s condition gives you a baseline for noticing changes.

Compare the serial number with the paperwork
Before letting a prospective buyer handle a watch for inspection, check its serial number together and compare it with the card or papers. Do not rely on appearance alone: in Senivasan’s account, the mismatch became clear when he compared the number with the documents.
Keep count and arrange watches deliberately
If you bring out several watches, know exactly how many are present and place them in a specific pattern. A consistent arrangement makes a missing or moved piece easier to spot while the watches are being handled.

Check everything before putting watches away
Before returning a watch to storage, recheck its serial number, card, and tags. Put it back in its box and seal the box yourself. This final check helps catch a substitution before the pieces leave your control.
Check references, but do not treat them as a guarantee
Senivasan recommends checking a prospective buyer’s references on watch forums before meeting. He also cautions that the step is not foolproof. As he told Benedictus: “Sure, it’s not fool-proof but it’s another step of due diligence that should help you to know who you’re dealing with.”

In this case, forum history, apparent knowledge, and an earlier completed purchase did not prevent the attempted swap. Use references as one part of your checks, not as a reason to relax your control of the watches.

Senivasan said he could not reach his loupe when he tried to inspect the serial number and instead used his phone camera. A 10x jeweler’s loupe can be useful for viewing small details, but it cannot by itself authenticate a watch. Compare the serial number with the documentation, and treat a reputable professional’s assessment as a separate safeguard when needed.
