A Rolex can be worth its price if you value the watch itself, can comfortably afford the purchase and upkeep, and understand that resale value is uncertain. It is not a guaranteed investment: outcomes vary by reference, condition, configuration, selling channel and timing.
What does a Rolex cost?
Price depends on the exact reference, configuration and market. As one current example, Rolex’s UK 2026 listing prices the Oyster Perpetual 36 in Oystersteel at £5,600. That is a UK retail listing, not a global price; the US and Canadian Rolex pages list the same model family in local currencies. Compare watches using the price for the same configuration and region, and account for applicable taxes.

For a purchase decision, compare the complete proposition rather than the headline price: whether the watch is new from an Official Rolex Jeweler or pre-owned, its condition and documentation, the applicable guarantee, and what it may cost to sell later. Rolex announced a Certified Pre-Owned programme for pre-owned watches sold through Official Rolex Retailers, but that does not mean every pre-owned Rolex is available through it or that certified pricing is necessarily the best value.

How much does it cost to own a Rolex?
The purchase price is only one part of ownership. The available Rolex service information does not establish a universal service price or service interval, so a single figure for lifetime ownership cost would be misleading.
Service and repairs
Rolex says a watchmaker examines the watch and provides an estimate before work begins; servicing starts after the estimate is approved. Ask for the assessment and estimate for the specific watch rather than budgeting from an assumed standard charge. After a full service by a Rolex Authorized Service Center, Rolex says the watch is returned with a Rolex Service Card carrying an international two-year guarantee.

What the new-watch guarantee covers
New watches purchased from an Official Rolex Jeweler receive a five-year international guarantee, subject to the guarantee-card conditions and stated exclusions. Rolex excludes normal wear and tear, loss, theft, damage due to misuse, and certain watches materially modified with non-genuine components. It is not coverage for every mishap or ownership expense.

Do Rolex watches hold their value?
Sometimes, but brand-wide claims conceal substantial differences between references and periods. WatchCharts’ Rolex Market Index tracks a selected group of 30 models by transaction value, rebalanced annually, and displays index values in USD. In its snapshot dated September 22, 2026, the index was up 5.7% over one year but down 9.9% over five years. Those two time windows alone show why a recent rise should not be treated as a reliable forecast.
Collection-level estimates also differ. WatchCharts’ pages accessed October 12, 2026, reported average value retention versus US retail of +14.0% for Datejust and +39.7% for Daytona, weighted by transaction volume. These are market estimates at collection level, not a promise that a particular reference will sell above retail. They also do not equal a seller’s net proceeds after selling costs.

Is buying a Rolex a good investment?
It is safer to treat a Rolex as a watch you want to own than as an investment expected to deliver a profit. The index and collection figures describe historical or estimated secondary-market performance; they do not establish future returns for an individual watch. Your result depends on the exact reference and configuration, the condition and service history, the purchase price, when and where you sell, and transaction costs.

Before buying, compare the actual options you could purchase using these factors:
- Reference and configuration: Match the exact model, materials and configuration rather than relying on a collection name.
- Price and location: Compare like-for-like prices in the same market, including taxes.
- Purchase channel: Distinguish a new purchase from an Official Rolex Jeweler from pre-owned or Certified Pre-Owned.
- Condition and records: Check the watch’s condition, documentation and service history.
- Coverage: Confirm which guarantee applies to that specific purchase.
- Resale assumptions: Look for model-specific estimates and account for selling costs; do not substitute a brand or collection average for likely proceeds.
- Personal value and affordability: Consider how much enjoyment the watch offers you and whether the purchase and upkeep fit your finances without depending on future appreciation.
Who is a Rolex worth it for?
A Rolex may be worth the price for someone who genuinely values its design and ownership experience, wants access to the brand’s authorized service process, and can comfortably afford both the purchase and ongoing care. It is a harder case to make if the purchase only works financially under an assumption that the watch will appreciate or resell for more than it cost.
Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf wrote in 1927, “We work to a gauge that cannot be measured by any instruments excepting our own.” That expresses the brand’s own view of its standards; it is not independent evidence of future resale value.
