The watch estimates body composition with wrist-based bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Studies find that its results can move closely with reference measurements while still differing materially from a person’s DXA result.
How Galaxy Watch estimates body fat
Samsung’s Body Composition feature uses bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to estimate body-fat percentage, body water and skeletal muscle. Samsung documents the feature for Galaxy Watch4, Watch5 and Watch6 series. It is intended for personal reference, general wellness and fitness—not for detecting, diagnosing or treating a medical condition. Samsung’s support page explains the measurement and its limitations.
How close is it to a DXA scan?
There is no single accuracy figure that applies to every wearer. DXA is a reference method used in validation studies, but a strong correlation with DXA does not mean the watch’s displayed percentage will be within a fixed number of percentage points for each person.
A study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition on July 26, 2022 compared wearable BIA with DXA and duplicate laboratory-grade octapolar BIA. Of 109 participants recruited, 75 completed the full manufacturer-recommended protocol. Wearable BIA and laboratory BIA showed no significant difference for fat-free mass, with Lin’s concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) of 0.97 for that comparison. Against DXA, wearable BIA was less precise: the coefficient of variation was 1.3% versus 0.7% for DXA, and root-mean-square error was 0.7 kg versus 0.4 kg. The study concluded that smart-watch BIA can provide stable and reliable body-composition measurements after systematic correction, but needs more repeat measurements than DXA for similar confidence in changes over time. What Samsung’s “97–98%” figure means
Samsung’s 2022 newsroom summary reports 97–98% correlation with reference devices across fat-free mass, fat mass, skeletal muscle mass, basal metabolic rate and total body water. Samsung’s summary describes that comparison. Correlation indicates that measurements tend to move together across participants; it is not a guarantee that an individual body-fat reading is within 2–3 percentage points of DXA. The 2022 peer-reviewed study also found systematic differences from DXA that required correction, as well as lower precision than DXA.
What a newer Galaxy Watch5 study found
A 2025 peer-reviewed comparison of Samsung Galaxy Watch5 wearable BIA with DXA reported a strong body-fat association (r = 0.93) and concordance (CCC = 0.91), alongside a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 14.3% overall. These results can coexist: readings may broadly track or rank participants while still having meaningful individual error. Female participants had the strongest reported body-fat accuracy in that study (CCC = 0.91; MAPE = 9.19%), but that finding should not be assumed to apply to every user or Galaxy Watch generation. See the 2025 study record on PubMed.

How to get more useful readings
- Follow the watch’s on-device instructions. Keep the fit and measurement procedure consistent rather than changing how you take readings from one session to the next.
- Compare like with like. Take measurements under similar conditions and treat a single reading as an estimate, not a definitive result. Hydration, skin contact, posture and differences in protocol can add noise.
- Look at repeated readings over several weeks. The 2022 validation study found that more repeats are needed than with DXA to reach similar confidence in changes over time. A consistent trend is more useful than reacting to small day-to-day changes.
- Use an appropriate assessment for consequential decisions. If you need a highly precise body-composition value or one that informs a medical decision, consult a qualified professional about suitable assessment methods rather than relying on the watch alone.
Why the watch may differ from a scale or InBody reading
Different devices use different measurement methods and protocols, and BIA estimates can vary with measurement conditions. A difference between a Galaxy Watch, a smart scale or an InBody device does not by itself establish which reading is correct. Compare readings taken under consistent conditions, and avoid treating estimates from different devices as interchangeable with a DXA result.
