It depends on the rating and condition of your particular watch. Cartier’s current Roadster listing for reference WSRD0014 specifies 10 bar, a rating Cartier classifies as suitable for swimming and snorkeling. That does not establish the rating of every Roadster—or confirm that an older watch’s seals still hold. Check the marking on your watch’s case back before swimming.
What the rating means for swimming
Cartier lists its current Roadster reference WSRD0014 at 10 bar, approximately 100 metres or 330 feet. Cartier’s water-resistance guide classifies 10 bar as suitable for swimming and snorkeling. The metre figure is a pressure-test indication, not a recommended swimming or diving depth. Cartier’s WSRD0014 listing and Cartier’s water-resistance guidance support that distinction.

This specification applies to the listed WSRD0014, not automatically to every Roadster produced over the years. Cartier advises owners to follow the water-resistance information on the back of their own watch.
Check your individual Roadster before swimming
- Read the case back. Confirm the water-resistance marking on your watch and follow that rating. If it is missing, unclear, or you do not know the exact reference, ask Cartier or an authorized watchmaker to identify it rather than assuming it matches WSRD0014.
- Make sure the crown is in its normal position. Cartier says to return the crown to its original position before the watch comes into contact with water.
- Consider the watch’s condition. Cartier explains that water resistance relies on seals that naturally degrade with age and recommends regular checks by its watchmakers. If the watch is older, has been opened or repaired, or has not had its resistance checked recently, arrange an inspection before swimming.
- Check the strap. Cartier advises keeping leather straps away from water because exposure accelerates wear. A rubber strap does not verify that the case seals are sound.
Cartier’s watch-care recommendations cover case-back markings, crown position, seal aging, and strap care.

Care for the watch in and after the water
- Do not operate functions such as the chronograph while the watch is underwater.
- After swimming, rinse a water-resistant watch with clear water to remove chlorine or seawater, following Cartier’s care advice.
- Keep a leather strap dry; avoid treating the strap material as evidence that the watch itself is safe to submerge.
Swimming is not scuba diving
A swimming rating should not be read as a scuba-diving rating. ISO describes ISO 22810 as the standard for water-resistant watches intended for daily use and swimming, while ISO 6425 addresses scuba-diving watches. Cartier’s 10-bar swimming guidance does not establish that a Roadster is a dive watch. ISO’s overview of the two standards was published on 3 November 2010; it is standards context, not a model-specific test report for the Roadster.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a published rating may not settle the question
Cartier describes water-resistance checks during assembly, but a manufacturing-stage check does not tell you whether an individual watch’s seals remain effective now. Age and current condition matter, which is why Cartier recommends regular checks. If the case-back rating or the watch’s condition is uncertain, have its water resistance checked before taking it swimming. Cartier’s quality and performance information describes assembly checks.
