The IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Shock Absorber XPL Toto Wolff is reference IW356201, a 100-piece limited edition announced on 17 February 2025 for Toto Wolff and the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team. Its defining feature is IWC’s SPRIN-g PROTECT system: a cantilever spring designed to cushion the movement from shocks. The edition pairs that mechanism with a Ceratanium case, PETRONAS-green details and an automatic movement with a 120-hour power reserve.
What is the IWC Toto Wolff Shock Absorber XPL?
IW356201 is a Big Pilot’s Watch Shock Absorber XPL created in association with Toto Wolff and the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team. The team connection is reflected in the name and in the black-and-green design. IWC says the watch’s movement-protection spring is coated with green Super-LumiNova. The edition is limited to 100 pieces, according to IWC’s 17 February 2025 announcement.

It is distinct from the original Shock Absorber XPL, reference IW357201, which IWC introduced in 2021. The references have different specifications and should not be treated as the same watch.
How does SPRIN-g PROTECT work?
IWC’s patented SPRIN-g PROTECT system places a cantilever spring between the case and movement. When the case is struck, the spring is intended to cushion the movement rather than transmit the full shock directly to it. For IW356201, IWC specifies a spring made from bulk metallic glass (BMG), with a PETRONAS-green Super-LumiNova coating. IWC describes BMG as more elastic than conventional crystalline metals.

These are IWC’s descriptions of its design and materials; the cited product information does not include an independent test report for the 2025 Toto Wolff edition. IWC reported that movements protected by SPRIN-g PROTECT withstood accelerations in excess of 30,000 g in impact tests conducted with the Fracture & Shock Physics group at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge. That result appeared in the company’s 7 April 2021 launch release about the original IW357201. It is a reported test result for the system, not a guarantee that every watch or real-world impact will have the same outcome.
