Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso: The Story Behind the Reversible Watch

Created to protect a watch’s glass during polo, the Reverso made its swivelling case the heart of an enduring Art Deco design.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso was designed to solve a practical problem: protect a watch’s glass during polo. Its case swivels in its cradle so the solid reverse can face outward and shield the dial. That useful mechanism became the defining feature of a watch whose rectangular proportions and crisp geometry also belong to the Art Deco era.

Why does the Reverso turn over?

The idea began in 1930, when businessman César de Trey was challenged to find a way to protect a watch’s glass during polo. He brought the idea of a reversible case to Jacques-David LeCoultre, and the two engaged designer René-Alfred Chauvot to develop it. The resulting case turns within a cradle, letting the wearer place its solid metal back over the dial. Jaeger-LeCoultre says the first Reverso deliveries followed in winter 1931. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s account of the Reverso’s origins presents this history as the brand’s own account.

The case is not a hinged cover: its central section swivels, reversing which side faces out. The movement makes the protective purpose visible in the watch’s form rather than adding an external guard. That combination of utility and distinctive design is central to why the Reverso endured.

How the protective case became an Art Deco design

The Reverso’s rectangular outline and measured proportions suited the Art Deco period. Its horizontal gadroons—parallel ridges across the case ends—reinforce the horizontal lines, while triangular lugs and the fitted cradle give the watch a coherent, architectural shape. These details are not separate decoration pasted onto the function: they frame the swivelling case that makes the watch reversible. The official Reverso collection history describes those design elements and the case’s evolution.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Head of Design Lionel Favre calls the watch “the synthesis of form and function,” describing reversal as the fundamental idea behind its design. The phrase captures the Reverso’s unusual balance: it began with a need to protect a dial, but the mechanism itself became the watch’s visual signature.

From outside movements to the Reverso’s own rectangular calibre

The first Reversos were not all powered by movements made by Jaeger-LeCoultre. While the manufacture developed a movement shaped for the rectangular case, early men’s models used Tavannes Calibres 063 and 064; women’s models used Calibres 050 and 051. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s own rectangular Calibre 410 appeared in 1933. The brand’s centenary history and its Collectibles archive document this early movement history.

The Collectibles account identifies a two-tone Reverso from 1936 with Calibre 410 and small seconds at six o’clock. It is a specific example of how the design developed after launch, rather than evidence that every early model had the same dial or movement.

What the reversible back became

Once the solid back faced outward, it offered a surface that could be left plain or made personal. Jaeger-LeCoultre describes Reverso backs decorated with engraving, enamel, gemstones, or miniature painting. The case’s original protective role thus also created an unusual canvas: a wearer could turn away the dial and show a personalized reverse.

Later models put a second dial on the reverse, making the case useful in another way. The Duoface presents a second time zone on its other side, while the Duetto offers a different expression of the same time. In the 1990s, the collection also began incorporating high complications, according to the brand’s history. Jaeger-LeCoultre says the Reverso family has included more than 50 calibres; that figure is the brand’s collection-history statement, not a count tied to a particular model year. The official collection page describes these formats and developments.

How to understand the main Reverso formats

Monoface and Duoface describe different ways the watch presents time, not different origin stories for the reversible case.

Duetto Two expressions of the same time The reverse offers a distinct dial presentation rather than a second time zone.

These are collection-level distinctions, not a complete specification for every reference. Case size and material, dial treatment, movement, winding details, and complications vary by model; check the exact reference’s current specifications before comparing watches.

The Reverso’s continuing evolution

The Reverso remains an active collection rather than a design preserved only as a historical object. At Watches and Wonders Geneva 2025, Jaeger-LeCoultre announced nine new Reverso models, including a Minute Repeater, decorative Reverso One editions, a Tribute Duoface Small Seconds, and a Tribute Monoface Small Seconds. This is a dated account of that year’s announcement, not a complete list of models currently available. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Watches and Wonders Geneva 2025 announcement describes those novelties.

What Jaeger-LeCoultre says about making and testing its watches

Jaeger-LeCoultre says every watch is designed, manufactured, and assembled at its Vallée de Joux Manufacture and undergoes its internal “1,000 Hour Control” testing. These are manufacturer statements about its own production and testing program, not independent certification results. The brand also advertises the possibility of extending warranty coverage up to eight years through its Care Program; eligibility and terms should be checked for the specific model and region. The official collection page presents these brand claims and program information.
