How did Jean-Marie Schaller get into watches?
Schaller grew up in Delémont, in Switzerland’s Jura region, where he was surrounded by people working in the watch industry. He entered the business through distribution, brand development and marketing, with experience at Siber Hegner, Perrelet and Lacoste Watches before turning to the Louis Moinet project.
He described watchmaking as inseparable from its regional heritage: “Watches are the expression of know-how, tradition and soul from the Jura Mountains and Switzerland.”
Why did he create the Louis Moinet brand?
Schaller’s aim was to bring the historical watchmaker Louis Moinet’s name and legacy into a new independent watch company, rather than simply reproduce period designs. He wanted a distinctive contemporary identity grounded in the history and craft of Swiss watchmaking.

His connection to the name was described as an unexpected discovery: “Somehow, I did not look for Louis Moinet. Louis Moinet looked for me.” He also framed a watch as something more enduring than a consumer product: “A watch is not a product. It is the testimony of unique know-how that has been acquired, developed, and enriched generation after generation.”
What is the Compteur de Tierces, and why was it important to Schaller?
Schaller recounted acquiring the Compteur de Tierces at auction in 2012. He later identified the historical timepiece as the first chronograph, a priority claim that should be understood as his account of the discovery rather than an independently established conclusion here. He said the acquisition gave the young company confidence and a clearer sense of direction.

WatchTime India’s 2022 article describes the Compteur de Tierces as beating at 216,000 vibrations per hour, or 30 Hz. That figure is attributed to the publication and is not presented here as an independently verified measurement.
What kinds of watches did the modern brand make?
In a 2022 interview, Schaller discussed unique and limited-edition mechanical watches under the groupings Cosmic Art and Mechanical Wonders. The names reflect the brand’s blend of horological mechanics and expressive visual design, but they describe the brand as presented in that interview—not a guarantee of its current collection or availability.

Jean-Marie Schaller died on May 16, 2026. Les Ateliers Louis Moinet’s announcement identifies him as the company’s founder and CEO and says board member Kurt Kupper continues as acting CEO. It also says Nathanaël Schaller remains with the team to continue the family’s work.

The company’s statement says: “Today, Nathanaël continues along the same path with the support of a team deeply committed to the values that have driven Les Ateliers Louis Moinet for over twenty years.” Tribune de Genève also reported Schaller’s death on that date and gave his age as 66.
