How the three Joseph Bonnie straps compare
Balazs Ferenczi’s Fratello review describes a small but varied selection: “The brand’s strap selection may not be the largest, but it’s versatile.” His assessment focuses on how the straps look and feel, not on a controlled or laboratory comparison.

What each model is like
Star 69: sporty perforated calfskin
The Star 69 translates the perforated, pigskin-grain look associated with vintage Tropic Star straps into leather. Ferenczi describes a thin grained-calfskin upper, black lining, and rolled edges without additional stitching. The review lists five colors: black, gray, green, gold and brown.

Its reported 110/70 mm length was short for Ferenczi: he found it inconvenient on his wrist, though he could make it work with a larger watch. That is his personal fit experience, not a universal sizing verdict. Check the strap length against your wrist and the way you prefer the tail to sit.
1953: a dressier leather alternative
The 1953 is presented as the more formal counterpart to the Star 69. The review describes handmade grained calfskin construction, rolled edges and a 2.2 mm thickness, with six colors: black, almond, cognac, charcoal, forest green and chocolate. Ferenczi suggests it may suit vintage watches with short lugs, but the model still has a specified 20 mm lug width; that suggestion does not mean it will fit watches with narrower lugs.

Rubber Tropic: patterned vulcanized rubber
Unlike the leather models, Rubber Tropic is described as vulcanized rubber rather than silicone. Ferenczi notes that its pattern continues across the lug end. The review reports a 120/75 mm length and a 20 mm lug end. His material description and comparison with other Tropic-style straps are reviewer claims; no independent material analysis is provided.
How to check fit before choosing
A strap can have the right vintage look and still be the wrong fit. Before ordering, compare the watch’s lug width with the strap’s lug-end width, then check both length and buckle width where those measurements are available.

- Measure lug width: the strap must match the distance between the watch’s lugs. The three reviewed options are described as 20 mm at the lug end.
- Check length against your wrist: the review gives 110/70 mm for Star 69 and 120/75 mm for Rubber Tropic. Ferenczi’s comment about Star 69 shows why a nominal fit cannot be assumed from lug width alone.
- Consider the buckle: both leather straps are reported to taper from 20 mm at the lugs to 14 mm at the buckle. The review does not state a buckle width for Rubber Tropic.
- Confirm exact specifications with the seller: current product pages may differ from the versions described in the 2022 review.
Which Joseph Bonnie strap makes sense for your watch?
- Choose Star 69 if you want a perforated, sporty look in calfskin and its reported length suits your wrist.
- Consider 1953 if you want a dressier grained-calfskin profile and your watch takes a 20 mm strap.
- Consider Rubber Tropic if you prefer a patterned rubber strap and its reported length works for you.

Fratello reported prices of €99 excluding tax for Star 69, €91 excluding tax for 1953 and €58 excluding tax for Rubber Tropic in its November 2022 article. They are historical figures, not a current quote or a present-day value comparison. The review’s stock comment about Star 69 was also specific to publication in 2022 and does not establish whether any model or color is available now.
