Seiko introduced the Presage Sharp Edged Open Heart SPB415 and SPB417 in 2023. The main choice is the dial: SPB415 has a light shironeri finish inspired by unbleached white silk, while SPB417 uses dark aitetsu blue. Both share the asanoha pattern, Caliber 6R5J automatic movement, and the same published core specifications. Seiko’s April 2023 recommended retail price was $1,200 per model; that is a historical launch price, not a current quote.

SPB415 vs. SPB417: what is different?

The two references are color variants of the same Sharp Edged Open Heart design. Seiko describes the SPB415 dial as shironeri, a soft white reminiscent of unbleached silk. The SPB417 is the darker aitetsu, or indigo-toned, option. Both dials carry the asanoha hemp-leaf motif, a traditional Japanese pattern Seiko associates with growth and success.

Reference Dial Shared design
SPB415 Light shironeri, described by Seiko as reminiscent of unbleached white silk Asanoha pattern, open-heart aperture at 9 o’clock, 24-hour subdial at 6 o’clock
SPB417 Dark aitetsu/indigo Asanoha pattern, open-heart aperture at 9 o’clock, 24-hour subdial at 6 o’clock

Seiko’s Sharp Edged Series overview describes the collection as combining an angular case silhouette with Japanese-patterned dials; the line debuted in 2020. For the open-heart pair, Seiko also describes the dual-curved sapphire as bringing the dial visually closer and making it appear more vivid. Those are the manufacturer’s design descriptions, not independent visual testing.

How the open-heart display works

Each watch has an aperture at 9 o’clock that reveals part of the movement, balanced by a 24-hour indication at 6 o’clock. The 24-hour subdial indicates time on a 24-hour scale; it is not a second time zone. Both models also have an exhibition case back, so the movement can be viewed from the rear.

Shared movement and specifications

SPB415 and SPB417 use Seiko Caliber 6R5J, an automatic movement with a stated 72-hour power reserve. Seiko’s April 27, 2023 release lists the following specifications for the pair:

Specification Published value
Movement Seiko Caliber 6R5J, automatic
Frequency 21,600 vibrations per hour
Jewels 24
Power reserve 72 hours (three days)
Functions Hour, minute, seconds, and 24-hour indication
Case diameter 40.2 mm
Thickness 13.5 mm
Crystal Dual-curved sapphire with anti-reflective coating
Case and bracelet Stainless steel with super-hard coating
Water resistance 10 bar
Magnetic resistance 4,800 A/m

These are specifications published by Seiko for the April 2023 launch; the figures are not measurements from an independent test. A Seiko UK boutique listing for the SPB417 gives more precise dimensions—40.16 mm diameter, 13.52 mm thickness, 47.37 mm length, and 20 mm lug width—reflecting that page’s regional listing and precision. Consult the listing for the reference and market you are considering rather than treating those rounded-versus-precise figures as a difference between the two watches.

Case shape, crystal and wrist fit

The angular case and patterned dial are defining Sharp Edged Series cues. Seiko says these versions add a mirror-finished facet between the case’s top and side surfaces. The 40.2 mm diameter and 13.5 mm thickness published at launch provide a useful starting point, but those two figures alone do not establish how the watch will wear: case length, wrist shape, bracelet adjustment and personal preference also matter. If fit is decisive, try the watch on or compare its full dimensions with a watch you already wear comfortably.

The dual-curved sapphire crystal has an anti-reflective coating according to the launch specifications. The coated stainless-steel case and bracelet are also shared; the documented comparison does not establish a functional or performance difference between the dial variants.

Price and availability: launch terms, not a live quote

In its April 27, 2023 release, Seiko Watch Corporation announced a recommended retail price of $1,200 for each model and said they would be available beginning in summer 2023 through select retailers. Those are historical U.S. launch terms. They do not confirm today’s price, stock, seller authorization, or availability in another market. Check a current retailer listing for the exact reference, seller, region, and price before buying.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose SPB415 if you prefer a light dial and the understated look Seiko associates with unbleached white silk.
  • Choose SPB417 if you want a darker indigo-toned dial and a stronger contrast with the exposed movement and hands.
  • Compare both in person if possible: the main documented distinction is color, and photographs or screen settings can affect how each shade appears.

Since the movement and published core specifications are shared, the choice is primarily aesthetic and practical—dial preference, fit, and the terms offered by a verified seller—not a documented difference in timekeeping performance.
