The Ketelaars 3D Terra in Motion turns a miniature engraved Earth into a mechanical day/night display: the globe rotates once every 24 hours, while a separate off-center subdial shows the time. Monochrome’s hands-on review, published 17 April 2020, describes a manually wound ETA 6497-based watch with an exposed balance and a domed sapphire crystal framing the layered dial. Its reported starting price was €4,000 before taxes in 2020; that is historical pricing, not a current quote.
How the 3D Earth works
The watch’s defining feature is a tiny three-dimensional Earth that rotates over the course of a day. It is not a conventional second time zone or a globe that completes a turn every hour: its 24-hour rotation makes it a day/night indicator. As the globe turns, its changing orientation gives the passage of day and night a visible, physical expression.
Ketelaars describes the collection as “Inspired by time itself. It cannot be grasped, contained, controlled, but it can be measured, and worn on your wrist.” That is the brand’s own description, not an attributed quotation from Stefan Ketelaars. The official Ketelaars site presents the 3D Terra in Motion Signature Edition, and the maker’s production page says its miniature Earths are hand-engraved and hand-painted.
Hands-on impressions from Monochrome’s review
In Monochrome’s 17 April 2020 hands-on account, the dial is arranged around two different kinds of motion. Hours and minutes appear on an off-center subdial, while the balance is visible on the dial side. The globe occupies the visual center of attention, and the large, high-domed box sapphire crystal gives the layered display room above the dial. Monochrome also describes heat-blued titanium hands and an onion-style crown.

The review reports that the Earth is 6.3 mm across and engraved under a microscope. Five shades of blue lacquer create depth, and a clear resin layer gives the finished surface a smooth appearance. These construction details are reported by Monochrome; they are not independent measurements or tests for this article.

Monochrome says the additional gear train connects the time display to the globe, making the Earth turn with the passage of hours. The review associates two extra jewels with this globe mechanism. It also notes that the 36.6 mm Unitas/ETA base movement is relatively large, which helps explain the watch’s 42 mm case.
