Grand Seiko’s SBGZ005 and SBGW260 commemorate different chapters of Seiko history. The platinum SBGZ005 marks founder Kintaro Hattori’s 160th birth anniversary; the pink-gold SBGW260 marks Seiko’s 140th anniversary and recreates the first Grand Seiko, launched in 1960. Both were announced for release in Japan on January 22, 2021, but they differ in purpose, movement, materials, size and edition quantity.
Who was Kintaro Hattori?
Kintaro Hattori was born in central Tokyo in 1860. At 21, in 1881, he established K. Hattori to wholesale and retail imported timepieces. His ambition extended beyond selling watches: he sought the skills and production capability to manufacture and assemble components in Japan.

In 1892 he founded Seikosha—translated by Grand Seiko as “The house of precision”—and began making clocks. Seiko Group’s official chronology records the company’s foundational milestones:
- 1881: K. Hattori established.
- 1892: Seikosha established and wall-clock manufacturing began.
- 1913: Laurel launched as Japan’s first wristwatch.
- 1960: Grand Seiko launched.
Grand Seiko’s commemorative feature attributes to Hattori the advice, “It is better to have ambitions and work step by step without haste but without rest.” Its 2021 announcement summarizes a lesson he promoted to colleagues as: “Don’t run but always keep going.” The feature also attributes to him a caution against getting too far ahead of customers: “Every merchant needs to be one step ahead of the rest, but only one step. If you go too many steps ahead, you will become distant from the public and closer to a prophet. A merchant should never become a prophet.” These sayings are presented by Grand Seiko as Hattori’s; the feature does not identify a dated original speech or transcript. Grand Seiko’s account of Hattori and its attributed quotations provide the source context.

What do SBGZ005 and SBGW260 commemorate?
They are not a matched pair celebrating the same anniversary. Grand Seiko announced both in 2020 for a January 22, 2021 release in Japan, with each model tied to a separate milestone.
- SBGZ005: A Masterpiece Collection watch commemorating the 160th anniversary of Hattori’s birth.
- SBGW260: An Elegance Collection watch commemorating Seiko’s 140th anniversary and recreating the first Grand Seiko from 1960.
The SBGW260 connects the two milestones visually as well as historically. Its visible movement bridge bears the trademark “S,” registered by Hattori in 1900 as the Seikosha factory symbol. The model thus refers both to Grand Seiko’s first watch and to an emblem from the company’s earlier history. Grand Seiko’s anniversary feature on the SBGW260 explains those design references.

What makes the SBGZ005 distinctive?
The SBGZ005 combines a 37.5 mm platinum 950 case with a hand-wound Spring Drive movement. Grand Seiko describes the case as softly rounded and Zaratsu-polished. Its patterned dial uses changes in surface depth to create shifting light-and-shadow effects, while the hands and indexes are 14K white gold.
Inside, Caliber 9R02 is assembled, adjusted and finished by craftspeople at the Micro Artist Studio. Its approximately 84-hour power reserve is attributed to a Dual Spring Barrel and Torque Return System. Grand Seiko’s SBGZ005 design description details the finishing and movement features.

How does the SBGW260 recreate the first Grand Seiko?
The SBGW260 is a pink-gold interpretation of the original Grand Seiko design from 1960, rather than a reissue in the original watch’s materials. Its 38.0 mm 18K pink-gold case is paired with gold indexes and a raised Grand Seiko logo. The visible “S” trademark on the movement bridge adds a direct link to Seikosha’s history.
Its hand-wound mechanical Caliber 9S64 has an approximately 72-hour power reserve. The official feature emphasizes the model’s gold details and the bridge emblem as part of its historical presentation. Grand Seiko’s feature on the SBGW260 describes those elements.
Which model is the closer fit?
The historical distinction is the clearest way to choose between them: SBGZ005 centers on Hattori himself, while SBGW260 looks back to the first Grand Seiko and Seiko’s founding anniversary. The practical distinctions follow from their specifications:
