The Laco Kempten Erbstück is a 39 mm, hand-wound Type B pilot watch with a deliberately hand-aged finish. Its compact diameter can be misleading: reviewer Rob Nudds found that the straight lugs and bulky closed-loop strap gave it a taller, less wrist-hugging feel than he expected. The surprise is not that it looks old, but that its fit and wearing character may be less traditional than its vintage styling suggests.
What is the Laco Kempten Erbstück?
Laco identifies the Kempten Erbstück as a 39 mm hand-wound Pilot Watch ORIGINAL, product number 862097. The maker describes it as a historically inspired observation watch with a Baumuster B dial and individually hand-aged components. These are Laco’s descriptions; they do not establish that this particular watch is a historically used artifact or independently verify historical fidelity. How does the Erbstück aging look?
Laco says it individually hand-ages the case, dial, hands and strap, applying marks such as scratches, scuffs, discoloration and wear. It offers three levels, from subtle to heavily marked, and says each watch differs. The worn appearance is an intentional finish rather than proof of age or previous use. Laco sums up its approach with the line, “Every scuff is intentional.”
Rob Nudds, writing for Fratello after borrowing a watch for a few weeks, found the aging convincing. That is a favorable personal impression, not a guarantee that every example will look identical or that every buyer will like the effect. Nudds also said he personally prefers clean watches and would not choose an aged model for himself—a useful reminder that the finish is the central taste question, not an objective upgrade.

What is a Type B Flieger dial?
A Type B layout gives the five-minute markers the prominent outer position usually occupied by hour numerals, while a smaller inner ring carries the 12-hour scale. That makes the dial visually distinctive and differs from a Type A layout, where the hour numerals are the main outer scale. Nudds describes the Kempten’s Type B arrangement in his Fratello review, published August 28, 2020.
Is the Kempten Erbstück too small?
Laco lists a 39 mm diameter and 46 mm lug-to-lug span, so the diameter alone does not tell the whole fit story. Nudds felt the watch wore even smaller than expected, but also observed that its straight lugs and lug-hole placement put the strap attachment near the center of the case. In his experience, that made the watch stand taller instead of following the wrist closely. This is one reviewer’s fit impression, not a universal result; wrist shape and strap fit matter.
The strap itself is a substantial brown, riveted, closed-loop design. Nudds found its double-ply bulk took getting used to. Although the listed lug width is 18 mm, that measurement alone does not confirm that an ordinary replacement strap will work with the unusual closed-loop attachment. Confirm compatibility before buying a substitute.

The Kempten combines a hand-wound movement with a large, high-contrast pilot dial. Nudds enjoyed winding the loaner and described it as a pleasing daily interaction, writing: “The winding experience offers a reassuring click and is an enjoyable daily interaction with the watch.” His account is a short-term personal impression rather than a movement test. The reviewed sources do not establish independent timing performance, long-term durability or tested water resistance.

The useful distinctions are movement, size, dial layout and finish. Laco’s current model matrix shows the related 39 mm automatic Type B model as the Speyer, while the Kempten is hand-wound. Nudds’s 2020 review also contrasted the Original line’s short, flat lugs and Swiss movements with the Basic range’s more modern case shape. Treat that as his comparison at the time, not a substitute for checking today’s specifications across models.
What did it cost when Laco’s page was checked?
On October 8, 2026, Laco’s official page listed the Kempten at €1,890 including VAT, plus shipping. The listing showed availability and an estimated 2–3 day delivery at that check. Those are region-specific, time-sensitive details, not a guaranteed price, delivery promise or third-party offer; confirm the live listing for your location before ordering.
Laco’s page also listed an Erbstück pilot strap at €149 and an Erbstück strap at €125, each plus VAT and shipping. Given the watch’s closed-loop attachment, check the intended strap’s compatibility rather than relying on the 18 mm lug width alone.
