The Longines Legend Diver 59 is a 42 mm watch, while the Legend Diver 39 is a 39 mm family. Both share core dive-watch features, including an automatic movement, up to 72 hours of power reserve, an internal rotating bezel and 30 bar water resistance. The choice is primarily about case size and the exact dial and strap or bracelet configuration—not a different level of water resistance.
What does “59” mean on the Longines Legend Diver?
“59” is part of the model name, not a 59 mm case measurement. Longines lists the Legend Diver 59 as reference L3.795.4.59.9, with a 42.00 mm case, black grained dial and stainless-steel bracelet. See Longines’ listing for reference L3.795.4.59.9.

The 39 mm is a collection of configurations rather than one identical watch in different colors. Reference L3.764.4.50.0, for example, is a black-dial version shown on leather in the cited regional listing; Longines also describes steel-bracelet variants and additional dial and strap options. See the Longines listing for reference L3.764.4.50.0.

Are their dive-watch specifications different?
On the cited product pages and Longines releases, the two sizes overlap on their main practical specifications: automatic winding, up to 72 hours of power reserve, an internal rotating bezel and 30 bar water resistance. Longines’ product copy describes the collection’s two-crown layout and internal bezel as distinctive. The specifications support a comparison of size and configuration, not a claim that one is the more capable diver.

The 39 mm technical information is more detailed in the cited releases. Longines’ August 2024 release gives 12.70 mm thickness, 20 mm lug spacing and the L888.6 movement, and says the listed models are COSC-certified and resistant to magnetic fields under ISO 764. It describes the 30 bar / 300 m rating as tested at +25% excess pressure under the stated ISO 6425 requirement. These are Longines’ published specifications, not independent test results.
The cited official extract for the 59 does not establish its thickness, lug spacing or certification status. That absence is not evidence that the watch lacks a certification; it means those details should be checked against current official information for reference L3.795.4.59.9 before treating them as a point of difference.

Which size is likely to suit your wrist?
The measurable difference established here is 3 mm in case diameter. It is a useful starting point, but diameter alone cannot settle fit: the cited sources do not provide a complete like-for-like dimensional comparison, including the 59’s thickness and lug-to-lug measurement. Try both sizes on wrist if possible, and check those dimensions for the exact references you are considering.
- Consider the 39 mm if you prefer the smaller listed case or want one of the family’s available dial and strap or bracelet combinations.
- Consider the 42 mm Legend Diver 59 if you prefer its larger diameter and the cited black grained dial on a steel bracelet.
These are preference-based recommendations from the published size and design details, not a fit test. The 39 mm family also received a white-dial update and additional rubber straps in Longines’ 2025 product release, so check the exact current reference rather than assuming every 39 mm example has the same configuration. Longines, 2025.

How should you compare prices?
The cited Longines US page displayed $4,100 for the 59, while the cited regional 39 mm page displayed CHF 2,900 when accessed. Those figures are from different markets and may reflect different configurations; they do not establish a price premium for either size. Prices can change, so compare the exact references in the same market and currency, with the same type of strap or bracelet, before buying.
