The Longines Heritage RailRoad is a 40 mm automatic watch that translates the clear, utilitarian look of Longines railway watches from the 1960s into a modern three-hand design. Its pale dial, bold black numerals and inner 24-hour scale give it a distinctive purpose-built character; its 30 m reported water resistance and larger case than the original are practical tradeoffs to consider. The details below concern the historical reissue reference L2.803.4.23.0/3, not a claim about current Longines specifications or availability.
What the Longines RailRoad is—and what it recalls
Longines presented the RailRoad in 2016 as a Heritage reissue inspired by one of the brand’s railway watches from the 1960s. The connection is more specific than a general vintage aesthetic: the original dial’s “280” marking referred to its manually wound calibre, while the reissue’s “888” points to the L888.2 automatic movement, as explained in contemporary coverage by Hodinkee and Time+Tide.

This is the Longines Heritage RailRoad reference L2.803.4.23.0/3 discussed in 2016 and 2017 coverage. It is a modern watch drawing on a historical design, not an original 1960s railway watch.
Why the dial works
The defining feature is a restrained, information-forward dial: a pale or off-white background, large black Arabic numerals, an inner 24-hour scale, black hands and no date. The uncluttered three-hand layout leaves the numerals and scales as the visual focus. It reads as practical and legibility-minded rather than ornate, while the two scales give the face more character than a plain dress-watch dial.

- Automatic L888 movement, hours, minutes, seconds and date Screw-down case back
- Stainless steel with double safety folding clasp
- 5 Year International Warranty
Time+Tide connects the design to railway timepiece conventions and reproduces wording attributed to the American railroads’ “General Railroad Timepiece Standards,” including the call for bold black Arabic numerals on a white dial. That is a secondary-source quotation rather than a primary standards document; the broader point is that the RailRoad’s high-contrast display fits the functional tradition it evokes.
Size, movement and reported specifications

| Detail | Reported specification | What it means for a buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Case diameter | 40 mm, reported by Time and Watches and SJX Watches | The reissue is larger than the 35 mm original noted by SJX. Diameter alone cannot predict fit; wrist shape, lug proportions and personal preference matter. |
| Movement | Automatic L888.2, identified in launch-era reporting | The “888” dial marking reflects the movement family, in contrast with the original watch’s manually wound calibre reference. |
| Power reserve | 64 hours, reported by SJX Watches and Time and Watches | A reported reserve for this historical reference; it should not be treated as confirmation of a current model specification. |
| Water resistance | 30 metres, reported by Time and Watches | This is not evidence that the watch is suitable for swimming or diving. |
| Strap width | 21 mm, reported by Time+Tide | A replacement strap may be possible, but confirm the exact fit and interface with a seller or watchmaker. |
SJX also reports a domed sapphire crystal and describes the watch as having an under-cuff-friendly profile. Those are the publication’s observations, not firsthand findings here. For the case-size comparison, movement and reserve, see SJX Watches; launch details including water resistance appear in Time and Watches.
Is it a good watch for you?
The RailRoad makes the most sense if you want a heritage design with a clear historical reference and a dial that prioritizes legibility over decoration. Its simple three-hand format also keeps the face visually composed despite the added 24-hour scale. Time+Tide praised the restrained design and railway connection, while SJX characterized it as a functional, uncomplicated remake; those are their reviews, not a hands-on assessment for this article.

- Consider it if you like bold numerals, a pale high-contrast dial, and a vintage-inspired watch that is still a 40 mm modern reissue.
- Try it on if you usually wear smaller watches or are unsure how a 40 mm case suits your wrist. The original’s reported 35 mm size does not make this reissue the same wearing proposition.
- Look elsewhere if you need a watch established by the available specifications as suitable for swimming or diving, or prefer a date display.
Against another heritage or dress watch, compare the actual case diameter and wrist fit, dial legibility, presence of the 24-hour scale, movement and reserve, water resistance, strap fit, and the specific watch’s price, condition and seller support. The available reporting does not establish a current cross-model value ranking.
