Its defining details are a 40 mm steel case, an off-white dial with a 24-hour layout and a “0” at the top, and a no-date display. Published reviewers praise its legibility and report a comfortable-looking fit, but those are their observations—not a firsthand test here. The modern watch takes design cues from a 1960s Longines timepiece; the sources reviewed do not establish approval for present-day railway service.
What the Longines RailRoad is
Longines introduced the RailRoad reissue in 2016. In its launch release, the brand said: “Inspired by a timepiece from the 1960s, THE LONGINES RAILROAD mirrors the sober and characteristic aesthetic of this model, as well as its technical characteristics.” Longines’ launch release is dated 16 March 2016.

Dial and design
A distinctive 24-hour layout
The off-white dial uses black Arabic numerals, a minute track and a 24-hour scale. Instead of “12” at the top, it has “0,” a choice that gives the face its most immediately recognizable railroad-watch cue. The display is limited to hours, minutes and seconds, with no date window.

Fratello describes the dial as polished or domed and the hands as black, with leaf-shaped hour and minute hands and a slender seconds hand. The 2016 reissue’s dial marking “R.R. 888” refers to its modern movement, rather than the marking on the historical watch. Fratello’s review and Deployant’s review document the dial and display details.
Case, crystal and back
The stainless-steel case measures 40 mm across. Fratello reports that the original 1960s watch measured 35 mm, so the reissue is a larger interpretation rather than a dimension-for-dimension reproduction. The cited reviews list a sapphire crystal; Fratello specifies anti-reflective coating. Deployant lists water resistance of 3 bar (30 m). That rating alone is not a basis for treating the watch as a dive watch or assuming it is suitable for swimming.

- Automatic L888 movement, hours, minutes, seconds and date Screw-down case back
- Stainless steel and yellow PVD coating with double safety folding clasp
- 5 Year International Warranty
Deployant describes a screwed, solid caseback with a train engraving inspired by decoration found on railway-company pocket watches. Fratello gives the lug width as 21 mm—a less common size than 18 or 20 mm—so check the actual watch and strap dimensions before ordering a replacement.
Movement and everyday functions
The RailRoad uses the automatic Longines caliber L888.2. Deployant identifies its corresponding ETA designation as A31.L01, and Fratello makes the same connection. The cited sources report a 64-hour power reserve and a frequency of 25,200 beats per hour. They describe the original caliber 280 as hand-wound; the reissue is automatic. Fratello characterizes the modern movement as ETA-built and exclusive to Longines, so the available sources do not support calling it an in-house movement.

The no-date dial keeps the display focused on time, though the missing calendar may be a drawback for someone who relies on a date. Fratello’s reviewer considers the absence of a date a positive design choice and regards the dial’s automatic wording as a minor aesthetic criticism.
What published reviewers say about wearing it
Fratello’s reviewer praises the contrast between the black hands and light dial, calling the hands very readable and highlighting their leaf shape. The same reviewer flags the 21 mm lug width as a possible inconvenience when shopping for alternative straps. These are individual review impressions, not instrumented readability results.

Deployant’s reviewer says the 40 mm case fits nicely on the wrist and considers the styling appropriate for office, casual or semi-formal wear. The cited passage does not provide a wrist measurement or wearer survey, so that fit assessment should not be generalized to every wrist.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How strong is the railroad connection?
The connection is historical and design-led: Longines says the reissue was inspired by a 1960s timepiece, and independent coverage discusses the earlier railroad watch and its caliber 280. The modern model’s “R.R. 888” marking points to the L888.2. The cited sources do not establish that this reissue is certified or approved for current railway operations, so its railroad identity should not be mistaken for present-day service qualification.

What to check before buying an older example
Because this is a 2016 reference, current stock, price, seller authorization and condition depend on live listings; the cited sources do not establish those details. Assess each example on its own merits:
Quick Recap
- Verify the reference: compare the watch and its documentation with L2.803.4.23.0 or the reported L2.803.4.23.0/3, and confirm the configuration rather than relying on a listing title alone.
- Inspect condition: ask for clear photographs of the dial, case, crystal, hands and caseback, and look for damage or alterations that matter to you.
- Ask about service: request available service records and clarify what is documented rather than assuming maintenance history.
- Check completeness: establish whether box, papers and accessories are included, and whether those items match the specific watch.
- Evaluate the seller: review the seller’s credibility, return terms and any stated warranty; do not assume a listing is from an authorized seller.
- Confirm strap fit: check lug width and the specific strap or end-link compatibility, especially if replacing the original strap.
