The Ludovic Ballouard Upside Down is a manually wound jumping-hour watch that turns the usual reading of time on its head: the current hour is upright and marked with a dot, while the other eleven hour numerals sit upside down. A central hand shows minutes and a small subsidiary dial shows seconds. Its 41 mm precious-metal case looks restrained; the display and the instant hour change are anything but conventional.
This review explains how to read the dial, what the maker specifies, what one earlier hands-on review observed, and how to interpret the watch’s dated price reports. The official product page does not publish a current numeric price, so historical figures are context rather than a quote.
How the Upside Down display works
Twelve hour numerals sit on discs around the dial. At any given moment, the current hour is the one shown right-side up, with a dot helping identify it; the remaining numerals are inverted. At the top of the hour, the display jumps: the outgoing numeral turns upside down and the new hour rotates upright. This is a jumping-hour complication, not an hour hand moving around the dial.
The central hand indicates minutes, and a subsidiary dial tracks seconds. The maker describes the idea as keeping the present hour legible while the past and future hours are turned upside down. The GPHG profile describes a black dot appearing in front of the 59th minute, but dot placement can depend on the dial variant, so use the dial in front of you as the guide.

The movement behind the jump
Ludovic Ballouard says the patented, manually wound calibre B01 was developed by the watchmaker. Phillips’ 2026 profile describes its jumping-hour mechanism as using twelve Maltese crosses. Monochrome’s 2014 review gives a more detailed account involving a lever, a snail-shell wheel, a toothed ring and the numeral discs, and says the gear train and barrel arrangement are based on the Peseux 7001. Those are descriptions from their respective sources, not findings from an independent movement inspection.
What it is like to read and wear
The unusual display makes the Upside Down a watch that rewards a deliberate glance. The upright numeral is easy to identify once the visual rule is learned, but it does not read like a conventional hour hand. Monochrome reviewer Robin Nooy’s 18 September 2014 hands-on review of a blue-dial platinum example noted that a quick glance near the hour change could be ambiguous. That is a useful caveat for anyone who relies on instant, habitual time-reading.

Nooy described the 41 mm diameter and 11 mm height of that example as wearable under a cuff, and praised its subtle complication and finishing. He also noted that the reviewed crystal lacked anti-reflective coating. These are observations on one example in 2014, not a test of every later version.
Specifications
| Specification | Maker’s current product listing |
|---|---|
| Movement | Calibre B01, manual winding |
| Components and jewels | 228 components; 51 jewels |
| Frequency | 21,600 vph (3 Hz) |
| Power reserve | Approximately 40 hours |
| Case | 41 mm diameter × 11 mm thick; red gold or platinum |
| Water resistance | 30 m / 3 ATM |
| Display | Jumping hours, central minutes, subsidiary seconds |
| Strap and buckle | Hand-stitched alligator strap; engraved buckle in gold or platinum |
These figures come from the official Upside Down product page. Published power-reserve and thickness figures are not consistent across sources: the GPHG profile lists 42 hours and 10 mm thickness, while Monochrome’s 2014 review reports 36 hours of reserve. The official page’s approximately 40-hour reserve and 11 mm case thickness are the current maker-listed specifications; confirm the exact details for the individual watch. A 30 m / 3 ATM rating is not a swimming recommendation.

Versions and configuration choices
The maker’s collection includes classic, limited and unique watches, with variations in metal, dial, numeral treatment and customization. The official page specifies red gold or platinum and an alligator strap, while a Phillips listing describes a particular example with a calf strap. That difference is a reminder to confirm the actual configuration rather than assume every example matches the standard description.

Price and availability: what published figures do—and do not—tell you
The maker’s product page does not show a current numeric retail price. Published figures vary by date, configuration and source, so they should not be treated as interchangeable quotes.
| Source and date | Reported figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Monochrome, 2014 | CHF 55,000 before taxes | Historical price for the blue-dial platinum example in its hands-on review. |
| GPHG profile, date not stated | CHF 50,000 excluding VAT | A profile listing, not a current offer. |
| The New York Times profile, 21 May 2024 | CHF 87,000 excluding taxes for a standard platinum example; CHF 180,000 excluding taxes for an osmium-dial version | Prices reported at the time of publication; not a live quote. |
| Europa Star, 2026 feature | CHF 87,000 for a standard version; CHF 130,000 for a miniature-painted version | Reported prices; the feature’s exact publication date is not clear, and the figures are not confirmed current prices. |
| Phillips auction record | CHF 52,920 realized for a 2015 platinum example | A specific auction result, not a retail valuation or a guarantee of what another example will sell for. |
For a current price by configuration and tax treatment, contact the maker through its Upside Down collection page. Europa Star’s 2026 feature also reported that the maker’s order book was full through 2027 at the time of publication; that is a dated report, not confirmation of present availability. Phillips Perpetual and auction catalogs offer secondary-market references, but listings and stock need to be checked directly.

This is a strong fit for a collector who wants an inventive mechanical display in a relatively restrained dress-watch format, appreciates a jumping complication, and is comfortable reading time differently. Its precious-metal case, unconventional dial and reported price level make it a considered purchase rather than a straightforward everyday tool watch.
It is less suited to someone who wants an immediately conventional hour indication, a clearly established current price online, or a watch to wear for swimming. Before committing, view the exact dial in person if possible and confirm the specific watch’s configuration, price, availability and ownership terms with the maker or seller.
