Choose the MCR for its bidirectional 12-hour bezel, or the MCT for a fixed tachymeter bezel; they are distinct versions, not interchangeable names for the same configuration. The movement is the Sellita SW510Mb, replacing the automatic ETA 2894-2 used in earlier Skymaster versions.
What makes the Skymaster 38 MKIII different?
The third-generation Skymaster is designed around a manually wound chronograph movement. MAEN says the redesign accommodates the Sellita SW510Mb TOP Grade. That choice makes winding part of the daily interaction and distinguishes the MKIII from earlier versions powered by the automatic ETA 2894-2. The brand ties the Skymaster name to the Douglas DC-4 and KLM’s 1946 Amsterdam–New York scheduled transatlantic service; that is MAEN’s origin story for the name, rather than independently established design history.
Its two bezel options also change the watch’s purpose and appearance. The MCR has a ceramic, 60-click bidirectional 12-hour bezel, which can be used to track another time zone. The MCT has a fixed tachymeter bezel for calculating average speed over a measured distance. If the racing-chronograph look is your priority, the MCT is the more literal match; if you want a bezel that can be set to follow a second time zone, look at the MCR.
How does the 38 mm case wear?
Diameter alone does not tell the whole fit story. MAEN lists the case at 38 mm across, 47 mm lug-to-lug and 13.4 mm thick including the crystal and caseback. The relatively compact width is balanced by a substantial front-to-back span and a box-domed sapphire crystal, so this is not necessarily a small-feeling watch on every wrist.

Fratello reviewer Thor Svaboe described the sample he handled this way: “The Skymaster 38 MKIII is substantial for a 38mm watch.” He drew attention to its 47 mm span, recessed registers, winding feel and pushers. That is one reviewer’s impression, not a fit guarantee; wrist shape, strap or bracelet choice, and personal preference all matter. Monochrome likewise highlights the compact diameter and 47 mm length, while Mainspring Watch Magazine offers its own wrist-proportion observations on an MCT example.

Specifications above are from MAEN’s MCR collection page and MCT collection page. The official pages give a 56–62-hour reserve range. Monochrome describes the SW510Mb as having about 60 hours, while its movement summary gives approximately 63 hours; those review figures are not identical to MAEN’s published range and should not be treated as a single guaranteed runtime. Monochrome also identifies small seconds, a 30-minute chronograph register and a 12-hour register.
What do hands-on reviews say?
Independent reviewers focus on the way the watch’s proportions and chronograph details come together. Svaboe noted the recessed registers, winding and pusher feel, and reported an average of +7 seconds per day on the prototype he handled. That is one reviewer’s observation about a prototype, not a factory accuracy specification or promise for retail examples.

Svaboe also reported that his sample weighed 140 g on bracelet. MAEN currently lists 135 g for its specified configuration, so those figures refer to different configurations or measurement contexts and should not be read as a direct contradiction or a universal weight. Monochrome emphasizes the box sapphire, dial contrasts and revised water resistance; Mainspring Watch Magazine discusses bracelet sizing and lume on its MCT review sample. These are individual reviewers’ observations rather than guaranteed outcomes for every owner.

The value question depends on what you want from a chronograph. This is a compact-looking, vintage-inspired design with a hand-wound Swiss movement, sapphire front and back, and 10 ATM water resistance. Its appeal is strongest if you specifically want manual winding and the choice between a time-zone bezel and a tachymeter. A buyer seeking an automatic chronograph, a date display or a verified side-by-side value comparison with alternatives should weigh those priorities before choosing it.
Fratello framed the MKIII’s value in relation to its debut model, noting the near-doubling of the launch price. The quoted historical figures are not directly comparable to current prices: Fratello reported a 2023 launch price of EUR 1,595 excluding VAT, while Monochrome reported a starting price of EUR 2,099 including taxes and immediate brand-site availability at the time of its review. They differ in date and tax treatment, so neither should be used as a current like-for-like regional price.

Broad alternatives named by Monochrome include Seiko, Tissot, Hamilton, Certina, Nivada, Baltic and Depancel. That is a field of brands to investigate, not a tested comparison: compare each candidate’s case diameter and lug-to-lug, winding type, chronograph registers, bezel function, water resistance, included bracelet or strap, and total regional price including taxes.
