Mechanical vs. Quartz Watches: How They Work and Which to Choose

Mechanical watches run on a wound spring; quartz watches use an energized crystal. Compare accuracy, winding, power, and maintenance to choose the right type.

Mechanical watches keep time with a wound spring and a regulating mechanism; quartz watches use an electrically powered quartz crystal as a timing reference. Choose quartz if you want to avoid routine winding and prefer a watch whose exact model has a suitable published accuracy specification. Choose mechanical if winding, wearing, and engaging with a spring-driven movement are part of the appeal—and you accept more variation and servicing. Light-powered quartz is a third option if you want quartz operation with less routine battery handling.

How a mechanical watch works

Winding tightens a mainspring, which releases energy as it unwinds. Gears carry that energy to the hands, while an escapement and balance regulate how it is released. Citizen’s mechanical-watch guide explains this spring-driven system and the difference between winding methods.

Manual and automatic winding

  • Manual: Turn the crown to wind the mainspring. There is no rotor to wind it through wrist movement.
  • Automatic: A rotor moves as the wearer’s arm moves and winds the mainspring. Depending on the watch and how it is worn, it may still stop if it is left unworn long enough for its reserve to run down.

Citizen describes around 40 hours or more after a full winding as a general mechanical-watch run time, with model variation. Treat the exact watch’s published power reserve as the useful figure, not that broad example.

How a quartz watch works

An energized quartz crystal oscillates at a regular frequency and provides the movement’s timing reference. In an analog quartz watch, an electric motor drives the gears and hands. Citizen’s Cal. 0200 movement guide gives 32,768 Hz as the ordinary quartz oscillation figure and 5–10 beats per second for the mechanical balance range it describes. These are explanatory figures from that guide, not specifications for every movement.

Quartz refers to the timekeeping movement, not a single power source. Many quartz watches use a replaceable battery; light-powered quartz uses light to generate energy instead.

Light-powered quartz

Citizen says its Eco-Drive watches convert natural and artificial light into energy. Its Eco-Drive support page says many models can run for more than six months in total darkness on a full charge, while noting exceptions and model variation. This is Citizen’s claim for many of its models, not a guarantee for every light-powered quartz watch. Check the specific model’s instructions about exposure and reserve.

Accuracy: compare the exact watches, not just the movement labels

There is no single accuracy figure that applies to every quartz or mechanical watch. Citizen’s guidance presents quartz accuracy on a monthly basis and mechanical accuracy on a daily basis, so compare each watch’s own specification and the conditions attached to it rather than treating the categories’ figures as directly interchangeable.

A mechanical watch’s daily rate can shift with how fully it is wound, the wearer’s pattern, position, temperature, magnetism, and shock. Seiko discusses the influence of use and environment in its accuracy FAQ and advises keeping the mainspring sufficiently wound. A single day’s result may not represent its usual rate.

Citizen recommends checking a mechanical watch’s average over a week or ten days: wind it and set it at the same time each day if possible, then record the difference from the previous day. See its mechanical-watch guidance. Seiko also notes that a mechanical watch’s rate varies with use and environment in its mechanical-watch accuracy FAQ.

Winding, power, and maintenance in daily use

Movement or power type What keeps it running Routine the owner should expect
Manual mechanical A wound mainspring Wind at the crown as needed; the watch can stop when its reserve runs down.
Automatic mechanical A mainspring wound by a rotor as the watch moves Wear it enough to keep it wound or wind it as its maker directs; it can stop when left unworn beyond its reserve.
Battery quartz An electrically powered quartz movement No daily winding; the battery will eventually need replacement.
Light-powered quartz A quartz movement powered by energy collected from light No routine winding; follow the model’s guidance on light exposure and reserve. Citizen says Eco-Drive watches do not require battery replacement, charging, or winding to maintain constant operation under intended use.

Mechanical watches need professional attention as well as any winding their design requires. Seiko recommends examination at a service center, with cleaning and oiling if needed, once every three years for its mechanical watches. That is Seiko guidance, not a universal service interval; follow the instructions for the specific watch and consider whether appropriate service is accessible where you live.

Which type should you choose?

Choose quartz for a low-intervention routine

Quartz is a sensible fit if you do not want to wind a watch regularly or monitor a mechanical rate. Decide whether you are comfortable with eventual battery replacement, or whether a light-powered model better suits your routine. For either kind, check the exact watch’s stated accuracy and power arrangements.

Choose mechanical if the interaction is part of the appeal

A mechanical watch suits someone who enjoys winding, wearing, or handling a spring-driven mechanism and accepts that its rate can vary with use and surroundings. Pick manual winding if you want to wind at the crown, or automatic winding if you want wrist movement to wind the spring. If you rotate watches or leave one unworn, factor in the possibility that it will stop when its reserve runs down.

Consider light-powered quartz to reduce battery handling

If you want quartz timekeeping but would rather avoid routine battery replacement, a light-powered model may be worth considering. Its performance depends on the specific watch and its exposure to light; read the model’s power-reserve and use instructions rather than assuming every watch shares the same behavior.

Check product-level requirements separately

Movement type alone does not establish a watch’s water resistance, case size, legibility, durability, price, or service cost. Verify these against the exact model and its maker’s documentation, and use the published accuracy and power-reserve specifications for that watch when comparing candidates.
