For everyday timekeeping with minimal attention, quartz is usually the practical choice: it keeps time without daily winding and generally needs fewer corrections. Choose a mechanical watch if you enjoy its mainspring-powered movement and are comfortable with winding, variable accuracy, and periodic servicing. Neither movement type guarantees durability; the specific watch’s construction, water resistance, condition, and care matter more.
How the two movements work
Mechanical
A mechanical watch is powered entirely by mechanical means. Its mainspring stores energy and drives the movement; an automatic model uses wrist motion to wind that spring. Mechanical movements have no battery, but they do need sufficient winding to keep running. Citizen explains the basic distinction between mechanical and quartz watches.

Quartz
A quartz watch uses electrical power and a quartz oscillator as part of its timekeeping circuit. Battery-powered models do not need daily winding, though the battery eventually needs replacement. Quartz is not a single accuracy class: performance depends on the movement and model, so check the maker’s specification rather than assuming all quartz watches perform alike.
Which is better for your daily routine?
| Everyday priority | Better fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Grab-and-go convenience | Quartz | No daily winding; a battery-powered model will need a battery replacement when depleted. |
| Fewer time corrections | Usually quartz | Exact performance varies by model. Check the manufacturer’s stated accuracy specification. |
| A mainspring-powered mechanism to wind and observe | Mechanical | Accept winding, rate variation, and periodic service as part of ownership. |
| Wearing different watches on a rotating schedule | Usually quartz for convenience | A mechanical automatic may stop if left unworn until its power reserve runs down. Check its manual for winding guidance. |
| Choosing for sport, water, or rough handling | Neither by movement alone | Compare the specific case, crystal, crown, water-resistance rating, and manufacturer guidance. |
For an automatic, wearing it regularly can keep it wound, but the required routine depends on the model. Seiko says that wearing its watches for more than eight hours daily helps keep them sufficiently wound, and recommends regular winding even for self-winding watches. Treat this as Seiko-specific advice, not a rule for every automatic; consult the watch’s manual. See Seiko’s guidance on mechanical-watch accuracy and winding.

Which type is more accurate?
Quartz is generally the better choice if you want to set the time and make fewer corrections. Mechanical accuracy varies with the amount of winding, wrist movement, temperature, watch position, magnetism, and shock. Citizen notes that a mechanical watch’s stated accuracy may describe static performance under normal temperatures, while actual performance can differ with wearing conditions. Citizen details these influences on mechanical-watch accuracy.
Do not judge a mechanical watch by one unusually fast or slow day. Seiko says to assess its mechanical watches’ gain or loss as an average over a week or ten days of actual wear. Citizen likewise recommends looking at daily accuracy over a period and keeping conditions reasonably consistent. These are manufacturer guidelines; follow the accuracy specification for your own model. See Citizen’s introduction to understanding mechanical-watch accuracy.

Quartz watches also vary. Citizen describes a specialized high-precision quartz product with a stated accuracy of ±1 second per year; that specification applies to the product discussed, not to ordinary quartz watches generally. Its explanation of the specialized oscillator also describes how temperature and gravity can affect crystal frequency.
What maintenance should you expect?
Mechanical service
Mechanical movements require periodic inspection and may need cleaning, lubrication, or parts attention. Seiko recommends service for its watches about every three years; Citizen recommends mechanical-watch overhaul every two to three years. These are each manufacturer’s recommendations, not a universal service law. Follow the manual and service guidance for the particular watch and region. Seiko explains that worn parts and aged oil can affect timekeeping or cause a watch to stop in its service guidance; Citizen describes its mechanical overhaul recommendation.

- Adjustable Strap: A comfortable band fits securely up to an 8-inch wrist circumference for everyday wear, day in and day out

Quartz care
Quartz avoids routine winding, but it is not maintenance-free. Battery-powered models need a replacement when the battery runs down, and the watch may still need condition checks. The sources do not establish a universal battery interval or a reliable lifetime-cost comparison between quartz and mechanical watches.

No blanket durability verdict is supported by the available manufacturer guidance: it does not provide a controlled comparison showing that mechanical or quartz watches are tougher overall. Mechanical parts can be affected by shocks, but everyday suitability depends on the whole watch—case and crystal construction, crown design, water-resistance rating, condition, and the activity you have in mind.

- Stainless Steel case with Black Resin Band
- Black Dial with date window at 3 O'clock
- Luminous markers and hour hands; sweep second hand
- Anti-reverse bezel
- Water-resistant to 200 M (660 feet)
Water resistance can change over time regardless of movement. Seiko notes that gaskets age and that shock can affect water resistance, and recommends regular checks. A rating is not a promise that a watch will remain water-resistant indefinitely; check the specific watch’s instructions and condition. See Seiko’s explanation of service and water resistance.

Quick Recap
How to make the choice
- Choose quartz if convenience and fewer time corrections matter most, or if the watch may sit unworn for stretches.
- Choose mechanical if you value the mainspring-powered movement and are willing to wind it as needed, accept variation in its rate, and arrange periodic service.
- For demanding use, compare the exact models’ construction, water-resistance rating, crown and crystal design, condition, and maker’s care instructions. Movement type alone cannot establish suitability.
- Before buying, check the maker’s accuracy specification, winding or battery requirements, service guidance, water-resistance details, and whether appropriate service is accessible where you live.
