Mechanical vs. Quartz Watches: Which Is Right for Your Collection?

Choose quartz if you want convenient, generally more accurate timekeeping without winding. Choose mechanical if you enjoy the movement’s traditional operation and the ritual of winding enough to accept greater timekeeping variation and model-specific care. Neither is inherently better for every collection: the right choice depends on how you plan to wear and enjoy the watch.

How the two movements keep time

Quartz: battery and crystal

A quartz watch uses battery power to excite a quartz crystal. The crystal’s regular vibrations provide a timing reference; electrical pulses can drive the hands through a stepper motor. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry describes quartz crystals oscillating at 32 kHz as part of its broad explanation of quartz timekeeping, not as a specification for every movement. TAG Heuer explains the crystal-and-motor process, and the Federation’s overview covers both movement types.

Mechanical: mainspring and winding

A mechanical watch stores energy in a mainspring. A manual model is wound by turning its crown; an automatic model uses wrist motion to wind its mechanism. Automatic watches are mechanical watches, not a separate movement category. Victorinox’s movement guide describes these distinctions.

Which is more accurate?

Quartz is generally more accurate, but a broad category comparison is not a guarantee for every watch. The Japan Clock & Watch Association gives general guidance of ±20 seconds per month for quartz and at least several seconds per day for mechanical watches. The association notes that mechanical rate depends on conditions; these are general figures, not specifications for an individual model. See its explanation of what watch accuracy means.

Some model families have tighter stated figures. Breitling says its current thermocompensated SuperQuartz models vary by ±15 seconds per year. For the current Breitling mechanical watches described in its FAQ, the maximum deviation under COSC is −4 to +6 seconds per day. Those numbers apply to the specified Breitling models and certified watches, respectively—not to quartz and mechanical watches as a whole. Breitling’s FAQ gives the brand’s qualifications.

Mechanical rate can change with mainspring winding, arm movement, temperature, and the position in which the watch is worn or resting. Seiko explains that mean daily rate should be assessed across a representative period of actual wear, rather than inferred from one day’s result. Use the maker’s tolerance for the specific watch when judging its performance; a single day’s deviation does not establish that it is defective. Seiko’s mechanical-watch accuracy guidance details these factors.

What ownership feels like day to day

Quartz: no winding, eventual battery replacement

A quartz watch does not need winding, but it does need a battery replacement when its battery is depleted. Battery life depends on the movement: Patek Philippe gives two to three years for its quartz movements. That is the manufacturer’s guidance for its own watches, not a universal lifespan. Patek Philippe’s care recommendations explain its battery and service guidance.

Mechanical: winding and power reserve

A manual mechanical watch needs regular hand winding. An automatic winds through wrist motion but can stop if left unworn long enough for its stored power to run out. The available running time varies by model. As one brand-specific example, Victorinox gives a 38-to-48-hour power reserve for its automatic watches, depending on model. Check the exact watch’s stated reserve and winding instructions rather than assuming those figures apply to other watches. Victorinox’s watch FAQ provides its model guidance.

Care and service are model-specific

Quartz avoids routine winding but does not eliminate maintenance; mechanical ownership is not governed by one universal service interval. Follow the maker’s recommendations for the exact watch. For example, Patek Philippe recommends service every eight to ten years for its quartz and mechanical watches, while Victorinox recommends a complete overhaul every four to six years for its mechanical watches. These are different manufacturers’ recommendations, not a single standard for all watches.

When comparing models, check the maker’s service guidance and consider whether qualified service is accessible to you. A quartz battery change and a mechanical overhaul are different needs; the movement type alone does not establish the cost or exact work required. Patek Philippe’s recommendations and Victorinox’s FAQ show how guidance varies by maker.

Choose by the role the watch will play in your collection

What matters most Quartz may suit you if… Mechanical may suit you if…
Timekeeping You prioritize generally higher accuracy; compare the exact movement’s stated specification. You accept greater rate variation and will assess it against the maker’s tolerance over representative wear.
Daily routine You prefer not to wind the watch and are comfortable arranging battery replacement when needed. You enjoy winding by hand or wearing an automatic regularly, and are comfortable with its model-specific power reserve.
Ownership experience You want a straightforward timekeeping tool with fewer winding rituals. You value the mechanics and the tactile or visible character of a traditional movement.
Care planning You will follow the maker’s battery and service guidance. You will follow the maker’s overhaul guidance and account for the movement’s service needs.

Use those distinctions to compare the actual watches under consideration: their stated accuracy, winding method or battery needs, power reserve where applicable, and manufacturer care guidance. There is no basis here for treating either movement type as inherently more collectible or valuable; that is not established by the movement comparison alone.

Grand Seiko’s instruction manual sums up quartz operation this way: “A battery, IC, and crystal make quartz watches work accurately, electrically.” The statement appears in its 9S25 instruction manual.
