Its manually wound D202.5 movement, including a seconds hand that resets to zero when the crown is pulled, makes the project more than a new dial and case: it is Dunselman’s effort to build a watch around a movement of her own design.
Who is Annelinde Dunselman?
Dunselman’s route to watchmaking combined formal training, work at established workshops and an earlier career in social work. Hodinkee reports that watches had fascinated her since childhood; she recalled wearing several at once and wondering what was happening inside them. “Watches have always fascinated me,” she said in an interview reported by Hodinkee.
Accounts of her career emphasize different parts of the chronology. Fratello says she studied watchmaking and goldsmithing at Vakschool Schoonhoven and describes a shoulder injury as a reason she reconsidered her career and moved from assembling watches toward developing one herself. That injury account is reported by Fratello. Hodinkee describes her earlier social-work career and internships with Jaeger-LeCoultre and Philippe Narbel. Quill & Pad reports that she worked at Grönefeld from 2019 to 2022 before establishing her own operation in Zwolle.
Those stages help explain the Black Tulip’s balance of workshop experience and independent ambition, but the sources do not provide a single, fully detailed biography.

What is the Dunselman Black Tulip?
The Black Tulip is Dunselman Watchmaking’s debut model. Fratello reports that development took nearly two and a half years. The project began with an attempt to modify a Peseux 7001 movement, but Dunselman ultimately abandoned that approach and developed the D202.5 instead.
The name reflects an ideal rather than a literal black flower. Fratello connects it to the pursuit of a truly black tulip, an elusive color approached by very dark purple or maroon varieties, and presents that pursuit as a parallel to watchmaking’s search for perfection.

How the D202.5 movement works
The D202.5 is manually wound and incorporates a zero-reset seconds mechanism. Fratello reports that pulling the crown makes the seconds hand jump to zero and stay there, a feature intended to help set the watch precisely. It also lists a 100-hour power reserve, a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz), 19 jewels and 125 components. These are published specifications, not independently measured results.
Fratello describes the movement as hand-finished, with a rhodium-plated mainplate and bridges, polished bevels, a free-sprung balance spring and a variable-inertia balance wheel. These details indicate the construction and finishing choices reported for the caliber; they are not a comparative ranking against other movements.

Case, dial and design
The published case diameter varies slightly by source: Fratello lists 38 mm, while Hodinkee reports 38.5 mm. Both give a thickness of 11.9 mm. Fratello’s specification list also names a stainless-steel case, domed sapphire crystal and 50 m water resistance.
Fratello describes a silver dial with a stylized tulip-or-D motif and applied indexes, plus small seconds. Its account also notes scalloped case flanks and small logos at the bezel edge. Hodinkee highlights the multi-layered dial and broad lugs. Dunselman described her intended character to Fratello this way: “I wanted a calm, simple aesthetic — classical but with some body.”

Edition and dated launch-era price
In its May 29, 2025 report, Fratello said the Black Tulip would be produced in 10 pieces and listed a price of €38,000 excluding taxes and shipping. Those are launch-era figures, not a current quote or confirmation that a watch is still available. Fratello also said sales were underway and expected deliveries to begin after summer 2025. A brand-hosted page reproducing Hodinkee coverage, dated March 3, 2026, says the final Black Tulip watches were being completed; it does not establish present stock, current pricing or a current ordering route.
