What the design and movement mean in practice
A pilot-style watch, not a historical reproduction
Mercer presented the Airfoil as a contemporary pilot-style design rather than a close copy of one specific historical watch. The vanilla dial uses luminous markers and hands, a red seconds hand and a date window at six o’clock. A black-dial version was also available when the review was published. The vanilla edition was described at the time as limited to 50 watches; that is a historical edition detail, not a current stock count.

A familiar Swiss automatic caliber
The SW200-1 is an automatic movement with central seconds and a date, and the reviewed watch’s rotor carried Mercer branding. Its 38-hour reserve is the review’s reported specification. The movement provides a recognizable mechanical feature set, but the review does not establish current servicing arrangements, warranty coverage or measured accuracy for an individual watch.
Water resistance and wear
Monochrome’s reviewer considered 100 m suitable for swimming, while advising serious divers to choose a different watch. Water resistance is not a guarantee for every activity or a substitute for checking the watch’s condition, crown and seals—particularly on a used example. The 40 mm diameter and 11.6 mm height give a useful starting point for judging size, but wrist fit also depends on lug-to-lug length and case shape; those measurements are not stated in the review.

Mercer Airfoil price and value
In June 2018, Monochrome Watches listed the vanilla Airfoil at USD 649, reduced from USD 799. Those figures describe the price reported in that review at that time; they do not establish today’s price, a current discount or whether the watch is still sold. A search for an official current listing did not establish stock or sales terms.
The reviewer praised the treated case, sapphire crystals, Swiss movement and overall presentation, and felt the watch suited casual or sport wear better than the most formal outfits. Those are the reviewer’s assessments, not independent performance tests. The review also placed the Airfoil in a crowded segment that included offerings from Tissot, Seiko, Hamilton and other microbrands. Whether it represents good value now depends on the actual asking price and the condition and terms of the specific sale.

What to check before buying
Because current production and sales details are unverified, assess the individual listing rather than relying on the 2018 review alone:
- Confirm the exact version: Check dial color, movement, case and included strap against the seller’s description and photographs.
- Verify seller and availability: Establish who is selling the watch, whether it is in stock and whether it is new, used or otherwise described.
- Compare the current price fairly: Consider the movement, case dimensions, crystal materials, water resistance and included strap alongside comparable watches available at the same time.
- Get the sale terms in writing: Confirm warranty coverage, return window and who handles service; the 2018 review does not establish current Mercer terms.
- Check strap fit before ordering accessories: The reviewed model used a 20 mm strap, but confirm the lug width and attachment details on the specific watch before buying a replacement.
Verdict
The 2018 Airfoil reviewed by Monochrome Watches made a considered specification case: a 40 mm treated-steel case, sapphire front and display back, 100 m water resistance and a Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement. Its reported USD 649 price is useful only as historical context. Without verified current availability and terms, the sound buying decision depends on confirming the exact watch and judging its present asking price against alternatives.
