Meta officially launched the product as Meta Ray-Ban Display on September 17, 2025. The $799 glasses went on sale in the US on September 30 with a full-color display in the right lens and a companion Meta Neural Band wristband for gesture control.
This is a significant step beyond ordinary camera-and-audio smart glasses, but it is not full augmented reality like Meta’s Orion prototype. The display is a small, glanceable interface for messages, navigation, captions, translations, visual AI answers and camera controls.

What actually leaked?
The original July 2025 report showed a blurry image allegedly depicting a product known in pre-launch coverage as “Hypernova.” The image was not clear enough to prove that the glasses contained a display. The report itself treated the display claim cautiously.
The stronger evidence appeared in September, when Meta briefly posted an unlisted promotional video showing Ray-Ban-branded glasses with a right-eye display and a wristband being used for gesture control. The video was later reported by 9to5Google.

The evidence progressed from a low-confidence blurry image, to an apparent Meta-hosted promotional video, to Meta’s official announcement and retail launch. In other words, the leak was substantially accurate—but “Hypernova” was a reported codename or rumor name, not the confirmed consumer product name.
Meta Ray-Ban Display: the confirmed product
Meta Ray-Ban Display uses a full-color, monocular display built into the right lens. Reported launch specifications identify it as a 600×600-pixel display. It sits to the side of the wearer’s view and is intended to appear briefly when needed rather than remain like a phone screen in front of the user.
Meta describes the display as private and in-lens, but that does not mean invisible or socially consequence-free. The content is intended for the wearer, while people nearby can still see the camera-equipped glasses and may notice the wearer’s gestures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMost importantly, these are display-equipped AI glasses, not full-field AR glasses. They do not provide the broad holographic overlays demonstrated by Meta’s Orion prototype. Orion remains an experimental augmented-reality platform; Meta Ray-Ban Display is a smaller, more practical interface for short interactions.

How the Meta Neural Band works
The Neural Band is an EMG wristband. Electromyography detects electrical activity associated with muscle movement. Instead of relying only on a camera watching a large hand gesture, the band reads subtle signals from the wrist and interprets them as commands.
Recommended Free Tools
Meta says users can perform gestures such as thumb swipes, pinches, scrolling, selection and clicking. The system is designed for silent interaction, including scrolling through information or selecting an item without speaking aloud. Meta has also discussed future text-entry possibilities, but announced concepts should not be confused with independently verified everyday typing performance.
The band comes with every Meta Ray-Ban Display purchase and is not sold as a normal optional accessory. It is not necessarily required for every function—the glasses also support voice and other controls—but it is the signature input method for the display experience. Because EMG sensing depends on close contact, the correct fit matters. Meta lists three band sizes.
Meta rates the band for up to 18 hours of battery life and gives it an IPX7 water-resistance rating. The glasses themselves are rated IPX4.

Meta Ray-Ban Display is not a self-contained phone replacement. Meta lists these requirements:
- A compatible smartphone.
- The Meta AI mobile app.
- A Meta account.
- An internet connection for cloud AI, navigation and translation.
- The Neural Band for gesture control.
A dead phone connection, unavailable cloud service or unsupported messaging app can limit the experience. Six hours is also a manufacturer estimate for mixed use, not a guarantee of a full day of continuous display, camera, navigation, calls and AI use. Heavy display and camera activity will reasonably be expected to reduce runtime faster than light audio use.
Meta Ray-Ban Display versus ordinary Ray-Ban Meta glasses
| Product | Display | Best suited to | US starting price signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 | No | Camera, open-ear audio and Meta AI | $379 |
| Meta Ray-Ban Display | Yes, right lens | Visual AI, messages, directions and captions | $799 with Neural Band |
| Oakley Meta | No | Sport-oriented camera and audio features | $399 |
The cheaper Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is the more sensible choice if you mainly want hands-free photos, video, open-ear audio and voice-based AI. Meta Ray-Ban Display justifies its much higher price only if you specifically want visual information, a lens-based camera preview, navigation, captions or silent wrist gestures.
The display model also brings trade-offs: thicker frames, shorter stated glasses battery life, a more involved fitting process and dependence on a wristband. It is not simply a better version of the ordinary Ray-Ban Meta glasses for every buyer.

Availability, fitting and prescription issues
As of Meta’s US store information reviewed on August 18, 2026, Meta Ray-Ban Display is listed as in-store only. That is more than a retail limitation. A demo lets buyers judge whether the right-lens display is comfortable and useful, while fitting helps ensure that the Neural Band can detect muscle signals reliably.
Prescription availability is listed by Meta, but prescription limits, lens choices, stock and regional availability can differ. Buyers outside the US should check their local Meta and Ray-Ban pages rather than assume that the $799 price, colors or purchase process apply in their market.
Privacy and practical limitations
The glasses include a capture LED intended to indicate when the camera is recording or livestreaming. Meta says users are notified if the LED has been covered. That is an important safeguard, but it does not eliminate the social and privacy questions surrounding cameras and microphones worn in public.
Workplaces, schools, museums, medical facilities and private events may restrict camera-equipped wearables. The display can make messages less visible to bystanders, but it should not be described as perfectly private. People may still see the wearer using gestures, and the camera’s presence can make others uncomfortable.
People with pacemakers, hearing aids, defibrillators or other implanted medical devices should consult a healthcare professional or device manufacturer before using the band. Meta warns that it contains magnets and components that emit magnetic or electromagnetic fields.

Who should buy them?
Meta Ray-Ban Display is most compelling for early adopters who want wearable computing rather than just a camera and headphones. It may also appeal to travelers who want navigation or translation, users who value discreet notifications, creators who want an in-viewfinder, and people interested in captions or hands-free interaction.
Skip it if you expect full AR, all-day heavy-use battery life, a phone replacement or a completely optional wristband. It is also a poor fit if you are uncomfortable wearing cameras in public or cannot conveniently visit a store for fitting and demonstration.
Verdict
The “Hypernova” leak was not just an abandoned rumor. Meta delivered the product as Meta Ray-Ban Display, complete with a right-lens color display and Neural Band controller. It is a meaningful advance over display-less smart glasses, especially for visual AI, messages, directions, captions and camera preview.
But it is not Orion and it is not full augmented reality. The $799 system remains phone- and cloud-dependent, the glasses are rated for up to six hours of mixed use, and the wristband is central to the experience. The product makes sense for buyers who specifically want a glanceable display and are willing to accept the price, fitting process and wearable-computing compromises.
