In a common mechanical design, a toothed wheel advances a disc with two moon images once a day. It is a useful visual complication, but the standard design is an approximation and needs occasional correction.
What does a moonphase watch show?
The display represents the Moon’s changing phase over a synodic month—the interval between successive new moons. IWC states that interval as 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.88 seconds. As the Moon appears to wax and wane, the watch’s indication moves through the corresponding phases, often through a small window in the dial.

It is a phase indicator, not a view of the Moon’s physical size or a general-purpose astronomical instrument. The display’s appearance and layout vary by watch.
How does the common mechanical mechanism work?
In a conventional arrangement, a 59-tooth wheel advances a disc bearing two identical moon images. The wheel moves one tooth each day. As the disc turns behind the dial opening, one moon appears to travel across the display and disappear, while the second moon begins the next cycle.

One complete turn takes 59 days, representing two lunar cycles of about 29.5 days each. The mechanism is driven by the watch movement; it does not track the Moon directly. The two-image disc and 59-tooth wheel are a common design, not a requirement for every moonphase watch.
How accurate is a moonphase display?
The familiar 59-day gearing approximates two lunar months, so its calendar does not match the actual lunar cycle exactly. The small difference accumulates over time, and the display eventually needs correction.

Baume & Mercier says its described 59-tooth design should be adjusted approximately every three years. Treat that as guidance for the described design, not a guarantee for every watch: gear trains and manufacturer accuracy claims can differ. For a specific model, check its maker’s stated correction interval and adjustment procedure.
How do you set or correct the moonphase?
Follow the exact manual for your watch. Different movements use different controls and procedures, so instructions for one model should not be treated as universal.

Patek Philippe’s procedure
Patek Philippe’s setting guidance says to advance the lunar disc to the full-moon position, consult its full-moon calendar, count the days since the last full moon—including the day of setting—and press the corrector that many times. The page includes calendar dates; check the maker’s current reference when setting.
Shinola’s procedure
Shinola’s guidance instructs owners to pull the crown to its final position and turn it until the display matches a reliable lunar reference, then reset the time and date as needed. This is an example for the watches covered by that guidance, not a substitute for another watch’s manual.

Check adjustment restrictions
The 2025 BALL owner’s manual warns against setting its moonphase function between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. and states that BALL moonphase complications are calibrated for the Northern Hemisphere. These cautions apply to the manual’s covered watches; consult your own maker’s instructions before adjusting.

Quick Recap
- Accuracy: Look for the maker’s stated cycle approximation or correction interval.
- Setting method: Check whether adjustment uses the crown, a corrector, or another control, and whether the maker specifies a tool or lunar reference.
- Movement and display: Note whether the watch is mechanical or quartz and how its phase display is driven.
- Regional calibration: Check for a hemisphere qualification if the manufacturer specifies one.
- Upkeep: Find out how to restore the display after the watch stops and whether the manual restricts when it can be adjusted.
