If you need one practical answer, it is the ETA 2824-2. It is the ETA calibre most often used as the beginner-friendly reference for a conventional Swiss automatic watch with central seconds and a date. That is an educational shorthand, not an audited production ranking: ETA does not publish a definitive public league table of its movements by total unit sales.
“Most common” can mean several different things in horology. The movements most likely to appear in watch specifications, movement databases, repair benches, and watchmaking courses are the ETA 2824-2, 2892-A2, 7750, 6497/6498, 7001, 2893-2, 2801-2, and 2804-2. Their current commercial availability is not identical to their historical familiarity.

1. ETA 2824-2: the general-purpose automatic
The ETA 2824-2 is the most useful starting point for understanding a conventional Swiss automatic movement. It measures 25.60 mm across and 4.60 mm high, uses 25 jewels, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), and has a listed minimum power reserve of 38 hours with a typical figure of about 42 hours.
Its usual display is straightforward: hours, minutes, central seconds, and a date. That combination explains much of its recognition. It is compact enough for ordinary wristwatches, robust enough for routine service, and historically used across entry-level, mid-market, and luxury-adjacent watches.
The name does not tell you everything about the movement inside a watch. A brand may change the rotor, decoration, regulator, winding components, date wheel, finishing, or other parts. A watch described as “based on the 2824” is not automatically identical to an ETA-supplied 2824-2, and a similar-looking clone or derivative should not be called an ETA movement without reliable evidence.
For identification, a date-equipped three-hand automatic with a familiar 111⁄2-ligne footprint is a useful clue, not proof. Confirm the calibre with a movement photograph, manufacturer specification, service record, or other reliable reference.

The ETA 2892-A2 shares the 2824-2’s 25.60 mm diameter but is only 3.60 mm high. ETA lists automatic bidirectional winding, seconds-stop, a date display, 21 jewels, a 28,800-vibrations-per-hour frequency, and a typical 50-hour power reserve.
Its principal advantage is packaging. The slimmer architecture can help a brand make a thinner watch or leave room for an additional complication. It is therefore strongly associated with dressier and more premium-positioned watches.
“Premium” here describes the platform’s thinness and typical application, not an absolute verdict on quality. Regulation, materials, finishing, construction changes, and the brand’s execution can matter as much as the base calibre. A well-regulated 2824-derived movement may outperform a poorly adjusted 2892-derived one in practical timekeeping.
3. ETA/Valjoux 7750: the automatic chronograph standard
When the question is specifically about the most common ETA automatic chronograph, the strongest answer is the ETA/Valjoux 7750. It is an integrated automatic chronograph rather than a simple time-only movement with a chronograph module placed on top.
Recommended Free Tools
The 7750 measures 30.00 mm in diameter and 7.90 mm in height. Its documented specifications include 25 jewels, a 28,800-vibrations-per-hour frequency, a minimum power reserve of 48 hours, and a typical reserve of about 54 hours. In its commonly documented configuration it provides chronograph seconds, a 30-minute counter, a 12-hour counter, and day/date functions.
The familiar asymmetric subdial arrangement and noticeable rotor action are useful recognition clues. They are not conclusive, because watch brands can alter the display layout, remove functions, or modify the movement. The watch’s stated calibre and a photograph of the movement remain better evidence than dial layout alone.
4. ETA/Unitas 6497-1 and 6498-1: large manual-wind classics
The 6497 and 6498 family began as pocket-watch-derived architecture and remains important in large wristwatches, pilot-style watches, small-seconds designs, skeleton watches, and watchmaking education. The movements are approximately 36.60 mm in diameter and 4.50 mm thick, with a typical reserve of about 46 hours.
The most familiar layout distinction is the small-seconds position. In a typical wristwatch orientation, the 6497-1 places subsidiary seconds at 9 o’clock, while the 6498-1 places them at 6 o’clock. Casing orientation can change the apparent placement, so this is a recognition aid rather than an infallible identification test.

The large plates and comparatively accessible architecture make the family especially useful for studying how a mechanical movement is arranged. Parts are easier to see and manipulate than those in many compact modern calibres. That is a training and service advantage, not a claim that every beginner will find the movement universally easy.
If you are practising rather than servicing a valuable watch, look for a 6497/6498-compatible practice movement or a clearly identified movement holder. Compatibility and authenticity matter: an inexpensive practice movement may be a clone or derivative, and it should not be advertised as a genuine ETA calibre unless the listing and movement documentation support that claim.
5. ETA 7001: compact traditional hand-winding
The ETA 7001 is a much smaller manual-wind movement, measuring 23.30 mm across and only 2.50 mm high. It displays hours, minutes, and small seconds, and uses 17 jewels. ETA’s product information lists a 21,600-vibrations-per-hour frequency and a typical 45-hour power reserve; a separate technical communication gives a 42-hour running-time figure.
Those two reserve figures are not necessarily contradictory. They illustrate why a specification should identify whether it is a typical, minimum, or document-specific number. In practical terms, the 7001 is a useful example of a slim, traditional hand-wound calibre for smaller watches and dress-oriented designs.

The ETA 2893-2 extends the familiar automatic architecture with a separately indicated 24-hour hand or second time zone. It measures 25.60 mm in diameter and 4.10 mm high. ETA lists bidirectional automatic winding, 21 jewels, a 28,800-vibrations-per-hour frequency, and a typical 50-hour power reserve.
This is the ETA movement to remember when a watch has a conventional time display plus an additional GMT-style hand. Do not assume every 2893-2 behaves identically when setting the hour hand, date, and 24-hour hand: setting mechanics can differ by variant and by brand modification. Check the specific watch’s instructions before adjusting it, particularly around the date-change period.
7. ETA 2801-2 and 2804-2: manual-wind alternatives
The ETA 2801-2 is a 25.60 mm, 3.35 mm hand-wound movement with central seconds, 17 jewels, a 28,800-vibrations-per-hour frequency, and a typical 50-hour reserve. It is a useful reference for a traditional time-only manual-wind watch.

The 2804-2 retains the same basic diameter, height, hand-winding, 17-jewel architecture, and typical 50-hour reserve while adding a date display. It is historically important and remains a familiar movement name in watch databases and repair discussions. However, ETA’s indexed catalogue marks the 2804-2 as phased out, so readers should not assume it is a current new-production option in every country or from every supplier.
How to use “most common” without overstating the evidence
A responsible shortlist is more useful than a false numerical ranking:
- Most recognizable base automatics: ETA 2824-2 and ETA 2892-A2.
- Most recognizable ETA automatic chronograph: ETA/Valjoux 7750.
- Most important large manual-wind and training references: ETA/Unitas 6497-1 and 6498-1.
- Important compact manual-wind references: ETA 7001, ETA 2801-2, and ETA 2804-2.
- Recognizable travel complication: ETA 2893-2.
This approach reflects historical ubiquity, technical importance, continued recognition, and the availability of ETA documentation. It does not claim that one calibre currently outsells every other calibre.

A calibre name is not a complete watch specification
The same base movement can appear with different grades, regulators, decoration, rotors, winding systems, date mechanisms, and brand-specific modifications. “2824-2,” “2892-A2,” and “7750” identify important underlying architectures, but they do not by themselves establish the exact parts, adjustment quality, finishing, or performance of a particular watch.
Family names do not guarantee interchangeability
Do not assume that hands, dials, stems, cases, or movement rings will fit merely because two movements share a family name or diameter. Small differences in hand height, dial feet, stem position, date location, calendar construction, and casing requirements can make parts incompatible.

ETA familiarity is not the same as current availability
ETA’s public catalogue distinguishes current products from phased-out products. The 2804-2 is indexed as phased out, while ETA continues to expose product or technical-document pages for movements including the 7001, 2892-A2, and 2893-2. That documentation does not guarantee retail availability, minimum-order terms, regional distribution, or spare-parts access. Check the current ETA customer information and the supplier’s specific stock before planning a repair or build.

How to identify an ETA movement reliably
- Begin with the manufacturer’s specification. A watch brand’s official product page or service documentation is stronger evidence than a marketplace description.
- Inspect the movement only if you can do so safely. Look for markings, bridge layout, rotor shape, calendar arrangement, and jewel count, but treat visual clues as provisional.
- Compare the exact version. Suffixes and variants can change functions, dimensions, setting behaviour, or parts compatibility.
- Separate ETA from derivatives. Sellita, Seagull, and other makers produce related or visually similar movements. A derivative can be a legitimate alternative without being an ETA movement.
- Verify before ordering parts. Confirm hand dimensions, stem, dial, date position, movement height, and case requirements for the exact movement and watch.
Bottom line
The ETA 2824-2 is the best general answer to “What is the most common ETA movement?” because it is the clearest and most widely recognized automatic time-and-date reference. The 2892-A2 is the thinner automatic platform, the 7750 is the defining ETA automatic chronograph, the 6497/6498 family covers large hand-wound and training-oriented designs, and the 7001, 2893-2, 2801-2, and 2804-2 fill important compact, GMT, and manual-wind roles.
Use “common” as a description of encounter frequency and educational importance—not as a precise current sales ranking—and verify the exact movement before buying a watch, ordering parts, or beginning service.
