The Mr Jones Watches Chaos Window tells time with ships, a horizon and a serpent, not with hands. The horizon’s angle gives the hour, flames from the serpent’s nostrils give the minutes, and a small square in the middle gives the seconds. There are two caveats. The maker lists the watch as a sold-out, 50-piece limited edition. Nothing in the maker’s own pages shows that this exact model has been reimagined or reissued, so this article does not claim it has.
How to read the Chaos Window
This is the maker’s description of the display, taken from the Mr Jones Watches design archive. I haven’t handled the watch. What follows is a reading guide based on that description, not a hands-on review.
Hours: the horizon and the ships
A line of ships sits against a horizon inside the window. The angle of the horizon marks the hour. The ships show which end of that line you should read from, so they settle the direction of reading. That matters because a tilted line could otherwise be read from either end.
Minutes: the serpent’s flames
Flames emerge from a serpent’s nostrils to show the minutes. The designer’s own line is that they let you know “exactly how much of the chaos has passed and how much is still to endure.” Think of the flames as a progress indicator through the hour.

Seconds: the square marker
A square in the middle of the window acts as the seconds hand. A second horizon and ship give its reading direction, in the same way the main ships do for the hours. The designer’s note says the smallest ship can “charter a full revolution of the planet in 60 seconds.”
A reading routine
- Find the main ships and note which end of the horizon they point toward.
- Read the horizon’s angle from that end to get the hour.
- Check how far the serpent’s flames extend for the minutes.
- Look at the central square, with its own horizon and ship, if you want the seconds.
The maker doesn’t claim this is instantly obvious, and it isn’t meant to be. The point is to make you work for the time.

The designer and his intent
The maker credits the design to Edward Carvalho Monaghan. In its design blog post of December 28, 2017, the brand says: “Edward’s goal was to make something unpredictable. Something that challenges peoples existing ideas of how a watch should work.” That is the brand’s account of his intent, not a direct interview quote.
The same post gives his tongue-in-cheek design instructions. They are playful, not technical documentation:

Is it a reimagining, and can you buy one?
Mr Jones Watches states that Chaos Window was limited to 50 pieces. The design archive marks it sold out, and the US design blog says the same. That is the maker’s published status. It doesn’t cover every possible resale listing, and I haven’t verified a current price or a secondhand offer.
The idea that the watch has been “reimagined” isn’t supported by the maker’s pages I could check. A 2026 T3 report covers two other revived archive watches, not this one. Treat any claim of a Chaos Window return as unconfirmed until Mr Jones Watches announces it.
