The NOMOS Tangente neomatik platinum gray is offered in two case sizes: 35.0 mm and a larger model NOMOS calls “39,” whose listed diameter is 38.5 mm. Both use the automatic DUW 3001 movement, but differ in case dimensions, case-back options and price. This specification-based comparison covers references 188, 189, 143 and 144; it is not a hands-on review.
What changes between the 35 mm and 39-series?
The larger model has a 3.5 mm wider listed diameter and a 4.3 mm longer lug-to-lug measurement. NOMOS calls it the Tangente neomatik 39, although its detailed specification lists a 38.5 mm diameter. Each size comes with either a stainless-steel back or a sapphire-crystal back.

How do the case sizes affect the choice?
35 mm: refs. 188 and 189
The 35 mm case measures 43.0 mm lug-to-lug and takes an 18 mm strap. It is the smaller, shorter-footprint option on the published dimensions. The steel-back ref. 188 is 6.7 mm thick; the sapphire-back ref. 189 is 6.9 mm thick.

39-series: refs. 143 and 144
The model named “39” measures 38.5 mm across, 47.3 mm lug-to-lug and 19 mm between the lugs. Its steel-back ref. 143 is 6.9 mm thick, while sapphire-back ref. 144 measures 7.2 mm thick. The longer listed footprint may be a useful comparison point, but dimensions alone cannot determine fit: wrist shape and personal preference matter.
NOMOS’s product imagery shows the 35 mm model on a stated 15 cm wrist and the 39-series on stated 16 cm and 18.5 cm wrists. These are manufacturer-selected images, not independent fit tests.
What do the four references share?
All four are stainless-steel automatics with galvanized, rhodium-plated dials, rhodium-plated hands and black Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan remborde straps. NOMOS lists 5 atm water resistance on the current compared product pages. That is the current listed specification, not a recommendation to use the watch for a particular water activity.
The 35 mm family’s product pages specify a rounded winged clasp. The 39-series ref. 143 page specifies a square winged clasp; check the page for the exact reference when confirming clasp details, particularly for ref. 144.

Movement: the automatic DUW 3001
Each version uses NOMOS’s in-house automatic DUW 3001. The current product pages list a 3.2 mm movement height, 27 jewels and up to 43 hours of power reserve. “Up to” describes the manufacturer’s stated maximum, not a guarantee of identical running time in every use.
NOMOS datasheets also describe the NOMOS swing system, stop-seconds, a bidirectional winding rotor, Glashütte three-quarter plate, DUW regulation system and adjustment in six positions. The ref. 189 datasheet is marked “Status as of October 2024”; the ref. 144 datasheet is marked “Status as of January 2022.” Those are dated technical documents, while the product pages provide the current headline specifications cited above.

Prices and case-back trade-offs
In the US-store observations dated October 7, 2026, ref. 189 was listed at USD 3,870, ref. 143 at USD 4,020 and ref. 144 at USD 4,410. The captured US source did not establish a price for ref. 188. These are regional, time-specific list prices, not assured transaction prices; check the current local product page for availability, taxes and price.
Within the observed listings, the sapphire-back ref. 144 costs USD 390 more than the steel-back ref. 143. The steel-back 39-series ref. 143 is USD 150 more than the 35 mm sapphire-back ref. 189, but those comparisons also change case size and back type. Choose the reference by the combination of dimensions and case back you want rather than treating the price difference as a like-for-like size premium.
