First separate “it will not charge” from “it charges but drains quickly.” That distinction usually tells you whether to troubleshoot the dock and cable, change settings, contact Oura, or consider replacement.
Oura currently estimates typical battery life at 6–9 days for Oura Ring 5, 5–8 days for Oura Ring 4, and up to seven days for Generation 3. These are estimates, not guarantees: ring size, settings, feature use, activity, temperature, and battery age all affect real-world performance. A full charge may take roughly 20–80 minutes, depending on the starting level. See Oura’s battery guidance.

Identify the failure first
| What you see | What it may mean | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| The percentage does not rise | Charger, cable, power source, contact, or ring fault | Test the correct charger with another cable and power source |
| It charges very slowly | Weak or incompatible power setup, poor contact, temperature limitation, or battery fault | Let the ring reach room temperature and substitute the cable and power source |
| It stops at one percentage | Contact problem, thermal limit, charger issue, or failing battery | Reseat the ring and test another compatible dock |
| It reaches 100% but dies within a day or two | Unusual consumption, software issue, inaccurate battery reporting, or battery aging | Update the app and firmware, then run a controlled drain test |
| The app percentage appears frozen | Bluetooth or synchronization problem rather than confirmed battery failure | Keep the phone near the ring and troubleshoot the connection |
| It charges on the dock but not in the case | Charging-case battery, pairing, or case hardware problem | Use the dock as a comparison test |
Do not buy a new ring until you know which of these symptoms you have. A defective USB cable or dock can look exactly like a dead ring.
1. Confirm the ring, size, and charger match
Oura chargers are generation- and size-specific. Verify the ring’s model and size in the Oura App before buying an accessory. Chargers for Oura Ring 5, Ring 4, and Gen3 should not be treated as interchangeable merely because they look similar. Oura’s purchase guidance and official store list the applicable products and sizes.

Do not assume a generic Qi charging pad, smartwatch charger, or another Oura generation’s dock will work. Oura specifies an external 5 V DC supply compliant with EN 62368-1 for its charging cable. Use the intended charger, cable, and adapter setup rather than treating every high-wattage USB-C source as automatically suitable.
2. Run this controlled charging test
- Dry and inspect everything. Remove dirt, residue, and moisture from the ring and charger. Do not charge in a humid bathroom or store the charger in a damp area.
- Seat the ring carefully. Place it fully on the correct-size dock and check that it remains consistently aligned.
- Try another cable. If the cable is USB-C, rotate the connector 180 degrees and reconnect it.
- Try another power source. Test a wall adapter, laptop, or power bank.
- Allow enough time. Depending on the starting level, Oura says a full charge can take approximately 20–80 minutes.
- Keep the phone nearby. Open the Oura App and check whether the percentage rises while the ring remains on the charger.
- Record the result. Note the starting percentage, percentage after one hour, whether it reaches 100%, and whether charging is stable.
If the ring is hot or cold, let it return to room temperature before testing. Oura advises avoiding prolonged exposure below −20°C / −4°F or above 60°C / 140°F, particularly for battery health. Brief exposure does not automatically prove permanent damage, but temperature can affect charging and battery performance.
3. Check the charging dock
Oura Ring 5 and Ring 4
Connect the dock to power with no ring attached. If its light does not illuminate:

- Try another USB-C cable.
- Try a different power source or adapter.
With the ring on the dock, a white light that appears and fades indicates expected charging behavior. A blinking blue light indicates that the ring is not currently paired and is ready to connect. Persistent blinking red or an unresolved charging failure should be escalated to Oura. Blinking yellow or red behavior can also indicate a power or hardware problem; consult Oura’s dock troubleshooting guide.
Generation 3
For Gen3, Oura recommends additional accessory and contact checks. Test the dock with a separate USB-A cable by placing the metal end over the dock’s center, rotate the USB-C cable end, and try another power source and cable. Remove and replace the ring on the dock several times to establish contact. Ensure the firmware is current. If those steps fail, a factory reset may be appropriate—but back up your data first.
4. Test the charging case separately
First confirm that the case itself has charge and that the ring and case are set up in the Oura App. Keep the phone within Bluetooth range: the case may still be charging even when the app cannot display its latest battery status.

Try the ring on its normal dock:
- Dock works, case fails: the case battery, pairing, or case hardware is the leading suspect.
- Case works, dock fails: investigate the dock, cable, and power source.
- Neither works: the ring itself becomes more likely to be at fault.
Update the app, ring, and case software where applicable. If the case LED does not illuminate, rotate the USB-C cable, try another cable, and try another power source. Move an excessively hot or cold case to a normal-temperature location and try again later.
Oura documents these case indicators: blinking red can indicate a power-source issue; solid red can indicate case hardware trouble; blinking yellow may indicate a ring failure; solid white can indicate a ring Bluetooth failure; and white followed by off can mean communication with the ring could not be established. See the charging-case troubleshooting guide.
5. If it charges but drains too quickly
Update before judging the battery
Update the Oura App and ring firmware, with Bluetooth enabled. Oura says the ring must be above 30% battery for a firmware update. After updating, Oura recommends two charge cycles: charge to 100%, allow the battery to fall to about 25%, and back up your data after each cycle.
Use Airplane Mode as a test
Airplane Mode can conserve battery when Bluetooth communication is not needed. Use it for a controlled comparison, then reconnect and sync as necessary. It may reduce radio-related consumption, but it cannot repair a degraded battery.
Run a 12-hour and 24-hour comparison
- Charge the ring to 100%.
- Record the time and percentage.
- Use it normally and note the percentage after 12 hours and 24 hours.
- Repeat the comparison with Airplane Mode enabled when syncing is not required.
- Record unusual heat, a sudden percentage drop, or a shutdown at a high displayed percentage.
A large overnight loss, especially when the ring is not recording unusual activity, points toward excessive consumption, inaccurate state-of-charge reporting, or battery aging. In an older Gen3 or Gen2 ring, aging is a more plausible explanation than it is in a recently purchased device. Oura does not publish a fixed user-facing lifespan that can diagnose every ring.
6. Rule out a phone connection problem
A stale battery percentage is not proof that the battery is failing. Update the phone’s operating system and Oura App, place the ring on its charger, keep the phone close, and restart the phone. If Bluetooth interference is suspected, temporarily turn off Wi-Fi and move other radio-powered devices away during testing.

On Android, Android 12 or later requires the Oura App’s Nearby devices permission. Android 11 or earlier may require location services for Bluetooth connectivity. Reinstall the Oura App only after simpler steps have failed and your data has been backed up. Oura’s connection troubleshooting instructions cover these checks.
7. Back up before resetting
A factory reset cannot repair a bad cable, failed dock, faulty case, or physically degraded battery. It should come after accessory tests and software updates.
- Place the ring on its charger.
- Open the Oura App and wait for it to sync.
- Open the upper-left menu and select Settings → Back up all data.
- Only then follow Oura’s reset instructions if support or the model-specific troubleshooting guide recommends it.
After a reset, the ring may need to be paired and set up again. For long-term storage, Oura recommends syncing and backing up data, charging above 50%, removing the ring from the charger, and using Power Saving Mode for storage longer than two weeks. Oura also advises not leaving the ring on the charger for more than one week or charging it indefinitely after it is full. See its Power Saving Mode instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen the ring itself is probably failing
The ring becomes the leading suspect when it fails on both a correct, known-good dock and a charging case, or when it reaches 100% and then drops sharply despite current software, normal temperatures, and a controlled test. Intermittent charging with clean, dry, correctly aligned contacts is another warning sign.
Stop using and charging the ring if it becomes unusually hot, swollen, cracked, emits an odor, or shows physical battery damage. Do not open, puncture, bend, or attempt to replace the internal battery. Oura’s public consumer guidance emphasizes troubleshooting, support, and warranty replacement rather than a user-replaceable battery procedure.
Warranty and support
Contact Oura when:
- the ring will not charge on the correct dock after cable and power-source tests;
- the dock or case shows persistent red or yellow errors;
- charging remains intermittent despite correct seating;
- the percentage falls dramatically immediately after 100%;
- the ring works on neither the dock nor the case; or
- a Gen3 factory reset does not resolve the charging problem.
Gather the model and size, purchase date and seller, device information if requested, app and firmware versions, LED behavior, exact 12-hour and 24-hour battery results, and the cables, adapters, docks, and cases you tested. Oura’s limited warranty covers defects for a period that depends on region and circumstances. Eligibility is determined by Oura based on factors such as region, purchase history, warranty status, condition, and diagnosis; a battery complaint does not automatically guarantee replacement.

Should you buy a charger, case, or new ring?
| Purchase or action | When it makes sense | When it does not |
|---|---|---|
| No purchase; troubleshoot or contact support | The ring is under warranty or the cause is unclear | Rarely a poor choice—this should be first |
| Correct replacement charger | The dock is demonstrably faulty and the model and size are confirmed | Before testing the cable, adapter, power source, and contacts |
| Charging case | You need portable backup charging and the ring itself works | To cure a failing ring battery or replace warranty support |
| New ring | Support confirms a hardware failure, warranty is unavailable, and replacement is worthwhile | When only the accessory has been tested or the existing ring may qualify for replacement |
As displayed in Oura’s store on August 18, 2026, Ring 4, Ring 5, and Gen3 replacement chargers were listed at $59 and are size-specific. Ring 4 and Ring 5 charging cases were listed at $99, and Oura says they hold up to five charges. The store listed Oura Ring 5 from $399 and Ring 4 from $349, with finish-specific prices and discounts subject to change. Check the current official store before relying on those prices.
The sensible order is: test the existing setup, replace only a proven failed cable or dock, request warranty support for a likely ring fault, and buy a new ring only as a last resort. A charging case is a convenience accessory—not evidence that the ring battery is healthy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Oura Ring die overnight?
An overnight drain can result from excessive consumption, a software or firmware issue, temperature, inaccurate battery reporting, or battery aging. Update the app and firmware, record the percentage at bedtime and in the morning, and compare a normal test with Airplane Mode.
Why does my Oura Ring say 100% and then drop quickly?
A sharp drop after a full charge can indicate inaccurate state-of-charge reporting, unusually high consumption, or a failing battery. Run a controlled 12-hour and 24-hour test after updating the ring, then contact Oura if the behavior continues.

Are Oura chargers interchangeable?
No. Oura chargers are generation- and size-specific, so verify the model and size in the Oura App before purchasing an accessory.
How long should an Oura Ring take to charge?
Oura says a full charge may take approximately 20–80 minutes, depending on the starting battery level.
Can the Oura Ring battery be replaced?
Oura’s public consumer guidance does not describe a user-replaceable battery procedure. For a rapidly failing ring, use Oura support and warranty review rather than opening the ring.
Will Airplane Mode extend battery life?
Airplane Mode can reduce communication-related battery use and is useful as a diagnostic comparison, but it will not repair a degraded battery.
Should I factory-reset the ring?
Only after updating, testing the charger and power source, and backing up your data. A reset cannot fix failed charging hardware and may require pairing the ring again.
What if the ring charges in the dock but not the case?
The case, its battery, pairing, or case hardware is likely at fault. Confirm the case has charge, update the relevant software, and follow Oura’s case troubleshooting steps.
Is a rapidly draining Oura Ring covered by warranty?
It may qualify for warranty review, but replacement is not automatic. Oura determines eligibility based on region, purchase history, warranty status, condition, and diagnosis.
