The Nautilus and Aquanaut share a rounded-octagonal sports-watch design language, but they differ in history, styling and how they sit on the wrist. For a concrete comparison, the white-gold Nautilus 5811/1G-001 pairs a metal bracelet with a blue, horizontally embossed dial; the steel Aquanaut 5167A-001 pairs a black composite strap with a charcoal embossed dial. Their listed dimensions, movement functions and water-resistance ratings are very close, so the choice between these examples is chiefly about material, wearing interface and design preference.
How the Nautilus and Aquanaut differ as collections
Nautilus: porthole inspiration and horizontal embossing
Patek Philippe dates the Nautilus to 1976. The brand describes its case as inspired by a ship’s porthole, with a rounded-octagonal bezel and horizontally embossed dial among its defining cues. The collection includes models with a range of complications, so the familiar design does not imply one universal specification. Patek Philippe’s Nautilus collection overview provides the brand’s history and design context.

Aquanaut: a later design with a dial-to-strap motif
The Aquanaut debuted in 1997. Its rounded-octagonal bezel recalls the Nautilus, but its checkerboard-like embossed motif continues from the dial onto the strap. Patek Philippe describes the composite strap as resistant to wear, salt water and UV radiation; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent durability test. See Patek Philippe’s Aquanaut collection overview.

Which is bigger, and what will feel different?
In these two references, the Nautilus is nominally 0.2 mm wider and 0.1 mm thicker. Those small listed differences do not, by themselves, establish which watch will feel larger on a particular wrist. The more immediately distinct wearing choice is a white-gold bracelet versus a black composite strap, along with each reference’s case and dial design.

The bracelet gives the 5811/1G-001 a continuous metal look, while the 5167A-001’s strap carries its patterned design beyond the dial. Whether one appears more formal or more casual is a matter of taste; the collection names alone do not determine how either watch will suit a wearer or occasion.

What the shared specifications do—and do not—tell you
Movement and functions
Both named watches use Patek Philippe’s self-winding caliber 26-330 S C and list a date, sweep seconds and 35–45 hours of power reserve. The matching core specifications make movement functions a limited basis for choosing between these particular examples; they do not mean every Nautilus and Aquanaut has the same movement or complications.

Water resistance
Both product pages list 30 m water resistance. Patek Philippe explains that its certified water-resistant watches are tested at 3 bars, corresponding to 30 m, and advises consulting the manual or an authorized service center when in doubt. A published rating is not a personalized activity recommendation: check the guidance for the exact watch and intended use. Patek Philippe’s water-resistance guidance explains the manufacturer’s rating and advice.
Do not infer price, availability or investment value from the comparison
The official product and collection information establishes design and specifications, not current retail or secondary-market prices, wait times, regional availability or allocation practices. Those details can vary by reference, date and market, and are not grounds here for claiming one model is easier to obtain or a better investment.
