Google began the phased rollout on September 24, 2024, with initial Pixel Watch 2 build AW2A.240903.005.A1. Google paused distribution two days later after some Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 owners reported blank or frozen screens. Wear OS 5 is now a historical release: by 2026, Pixel Watch 2 has also received Wear OS 5.1, Wear OS 6.1, and Wear OS 7.
Who received the Pixel Watch 2 Wear OS 5 update?
Pixel Watch 2 models running Wear OS 3.5 or Wear OS 4.0 were eligible. The rollout was staged rather than universally available on launch day, and timing could vary by country, carrier, cellular configuration, and device.

The original Pixel Watch 2 rollout began on September 24, 2024. Google listed AW2A.240903.005.A1 as the initial Pixel Watch 2 software build. It combined the Wear OS 5 upgrade with bug fixes, performance updates, and the September 2024 security update. See Google’s September 2024 Pixel Watch update announcement.
A Bluetooth/Wi-Fi Pixel Watch 2 and an LTE model should not be expected to receive every update at the same time. Carrier approval and regional rollout schedules can create additional delays.

What Wear OS 5 changed on Pixel Watch 2
- Wear OS 5: the underlying operating-system upgrade, along with bug fixes and performance improvements.
- Grid app launcher: a grid-style way to view apps, delivered through a Pixel Watch app update from Google Play.
- Improved Camera controls: updated controls for using the watch with a paired phone camera.
- Pixel Recorder: Recorder functionality delivered through app updates rather than solely through the core operating-system package.
That distinction matters. The OTA update, watch Play Store updates, and Google Pixel Watch phone-app updates are separate delivery channels. After installing the system update, open Google Play Store on the watch and install pending app updates. Also update the Google Pixel Watch app on the paired phone.
Do not assume that every feature announced for a newer Pixel Watch generation works on Pixel Watch 2. Some capabilities depend on newer hardware, sensors, or other device-specific requirements.
How to check for and install Wear OS 5
- Place the watch on its official charger.
- Connect it to reliable Wi-Fi, or keep it close to the paired phone with a dependable connection.
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Tap System → System updates.
- Follow the on-screen instructions if an update is offered.
Before starting, update the Google Pixel Watch phone app if an update is available. Avoid beginning a major update immediately before travel, exercise, sleep tracking, or another time when you depend on the watch. Leave the watch charging while the installation runs and allow extra time afterward for Play Store updates, syncing, indexing, and possible temporary battery fluctuations.

Why Google paused the original rollout
On September 26, 2024, Google paused the Wear OS 5 rollout for the original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 after reports that some watches became unusable or difficult to start after the September OTA. The reported symptoms included:
- a blank display;
- a watch stuck on the Google “G” logo;
- a frozen setup or pairing screen;
- an unresponsive touchscreen;
- repeated restarts or boot failures; and
- black screens in apps or tiles.
This was not evidence that every Pixel Watch 2 was bricked. Google described the problem as affecting some users and said it would resume the rollout after mitigating the issue. The pause was specific to that historical rollout; it should not automatically be treated as a warning about every later Pixel Watch update. See Google’s rollout-pause notice.
What to do if the watch freezes or shows a blank screen
Work through these steps in order. Do not factory-reset the watch until you understand the data-loss consequence.

1. Try a normal restart
If the display responds, press and hold the crown for about three seconds, scroll down, and tap Restart.

2. Perform a hard restart
If the screen is blank or the touchscreen does not respond, press and hold the crown and side button together for approximately 35 seconds, or until the Google logo appears. It may take longer in some cases. This is a restart, not a factory reset, so it does not intentionally erase the watch.
3. Factory-reset the watch
Use this only if restarting does not recover the watch. A factory reset erases apps, settings, and data stored locally on the watch. Information already synchronized to the relevant Google or Fitbit account may be recoverable, but unsynchronized local data is not guaranteed to return.
From the watch:
- Swipe down.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Disconnect & reset.
- Confirm the reset.
From the phone:
- Open the Google Pixel Watch app.
- Tap System.
- Select Reset and unpair watch.
After resetting, pairing may require the watch’s most recent PIN or the previously used Google Account credentials because of device-protection safeguards.
4. Use Fastboot and Recovery Mode
If the watch cannot be reset normally, Google provides this advanced recovery sequence:

- Hold the crown and side button for about 20 seconds until the Google logo appears.
- Immediately tap the upper-left and lower-right edges of the display at the same time to enter Fastboot.
- Use the side button to highlight Recovery Mode.
- Press the crown.
- When No command appears, press and hold the crown while swiping up.
- In the recovery menu, select Wipe Data/Factory Reset.
- Swipe right to confirm.
- After the wipe finishes, select Reboot system now.
This also erases the watch. Follow Google’s current Pixel Watch troubleshooting guidance if the controls or screens differ on your software version. Do not insert objects into the microphone openings or charging-pin openings; Google warns that doing so can damage the watch. Contact Google support if these recovery steps fail.

During the 2024 rollout, a message saying the watch was up to date did not necessarily mean there was a problem. Possible explanations included:
- the staged rollout had not reached the watch;
- LTE and Bluetooth/Wi-Fi models were on different schedules;
- carrier or regional approval was pending;
- the watch needed a battery or connectivity condition before updating;
- the starting software was not yet eligible; or
- the watch had already moved to a newer release.
Check the installed software under Settings → System → About → Versions, though labels can differ across later Wear OS releases. Update the Google Pixel Watch app and watch Play Store apps separately.

For build-specific information, consult Google’s official Pixel Watch OTA images and builds page. Ordinary owners should not sideload or manually flash an OTA: flashing can erase data and introduce additional recovery problems.
Is Wear OS 5 still the latest Pixel Watch 2 software?
No. If you are reading this in 2026, do not wait for Wear OS 5 as though it were a new update. Pixel Watch 2 later received:
- Wear OS 5.1: Bluetooth/Wi-Fi models were listed for March 4, 2025, and LTE models for March 18, 2025. Wear OS 5.1 is based on Android 15; that does not mean the original September 2024 Wear OS 5 rollout should be described the same way. See Android Developers’ Wear OS 5.1 documentation.
- Wear OS 6.1: a December 2025 rollout.
- Wear OS 7: a phased rollout beginning in June 2026, including Pixel Watch 2 among the supported generations in Google’s rollout information.
The correct current version depends on the watch’s LTE or Bluetooth/Wi-Fi configuration, country, carrier, rollout phase, and later monthly updates. A Pixel Watch 2 that says it is up to date may correctly be running a release newer than Wear OS 5.
