watchOS 11 brought a redesigned Photos face plus Flux and Reflections. Here is what each does, how to add them, and why “Series 10 exclusive” needs qualification.

watchOS 11 introduced three highlighted watch-face options: a substantially redesigned Photos face, the bold graphical Flux face, and the decorative Reflections face. Photos is the most useful everyday update, Flux makes the strongest visual statement, and Reflections is the most style-focused.

There is an important date qualification: watchOS 11 launched on September 16, 2024, and is now a previous-generation release. As of September 4, 2026, Apple’s current major release is watchOS 26. This article examines what watchOS 11 added rather than presenting these faces as Apple’s newest options.

Apple’s launch announcement emphasized how the faces could benefit from Apple Watch Series 10’s larger display and 1Hz refresh capability. That does not, by itself, prove that the faces are exclusive to Series 10.

At a glance

Priority Best choice Why
Personal photos Photos Uses curated or manually selected images and can change what appears on wrist raise.
Visual novelty Flux Color and typography progressively fill the display as time advances.
Fashion and decoration Reflections A metallic, shimmering dial reacts subtly to wrist movement.
Maximum information An existing modular face The new designs prioritize visual identity over complication density.
Low-maintenance setup Flux or Reflections Neither depends on organizing a photo library.

What was actually new in watchOS 11?

The watch-face update was not simply three entirely new faces. Flux and Reflections were new visual designs highlighted for watchOS 11. Photos was an extensive redesign of an existing face, adding smarter image selection, subject-aware composition, and more dynamic behavior.

Apple describes these features in its watchOS 11 feature documentation. The machine-learning language refers to selecting and arranging existing photographs; it does not mean that the watch generates new photographs or performs generative image editing.

Photos: the most meaningful update

The redesigned Photos face is the most practically useful of the three because it can turn the watch into a changing personal display rather than a static dial.

How photo selection works

Apple says its recommendations can consider factors including aesthetics, composition, facial expressions, and categories such as People, Pets, Cities, and Nature. The system can also position a subject within the frame to improve the composition and create a sense of depth.

That is more sophisticated than simply assigning an album to a random-shuffle face, but it remains a recommendation system. It may choose an image you do not want, favor near-duplicates, or crop an otherwise appealing photograph awkwardly. The safest approach for a dependable daily face is a small, intentional album or a manually selected set of images.

Dynamic versus controlled photos

Photos offers three distinct ways to approach the face:

  • Curated photos: let Apple organize images using its recommendations and categories.
  • User-selected photos: choose the images yourself when predictability matters more than automation.
  • Shuffle behavior: rotate through images so the face can show a different photograph after a wrist raise or a tap, depending on the selected configuration.

The dynamic approach is best for someone who wants the watch to feel different throughout the day. It is less suitable if the wearer needs a specific photo to remain visible.

Layout, time placement, and complications

Photos is not just an image picker. Its layout controls affect how much of the image remains visible, where the time sits, and how complications share the display with the subject. A striking portrait can lose its impact if the time or a complication covers the face, while a landscape may benefit from a different time position.

Photos is therefore highly customizable, but it is not necessarily information-dense. If quick access to weather, calendar, battery, activity, or workout data is the main purpose of the watch face, an existing modular design remains the more practical daily choice.

When Photos works best

  • Use manually selected portraits for a predictable personal display.
  • Use a carefully edited album for controlled rotation.
  • Use Apple’s categories when discovery and variety matter more than exact selection.
  • Change the time position if the subject is obscured.
  • Replace recommendations that are dominated by screenshots, duplicates, or poorly cropped images.

You can also add an individual photograph from the Photos app on Apple Watch, as described in Apple’s Photos-face instructions.

Flux: the strongest design statement

Flux is a bold, graphic face rather than a traditional analog dial or a data-heavy modular layout. Its typography and color progressively fill the display as seconds pass, making the passage of time part of the visual design.

That gives Flux a stronger identity than a conventional color variation. It is aimed at people who want motion, novelty, and a large graphic treatment more than a restrained information dashboard.

What Series 10 changes

Apple specifically connected Flux’s treatment with Apple Watch Series 10’s larger display and 1Hz refresh capability. Those hardware characteristics help explain why the face was presented alongside that model and why it may look most impactful on a larger screen.

Apple Watch SE 3 [GPS 40mm] Smartwatch with Starlight Aluminum Case with Starlight Sport Band - S/M. Fitness and Sleep Trackers, Heart Rate Monitor, Always-On Display, Water Resistant
  • GET SMARTER HEALTH INSIGHTS—Apple Watch SE 3 is an advanced health tracker that helps you better understand your body. The smartwatch sends alerts for an irregular heart rhythm, or an unusually high or low heart rate.* You can view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app,* track your sleep score, and get sleep apnea notifications.*
  • A GREAT FITNESS TRACKER—SE 3 can track your workouts in a healthy number of ways—from running and strength training to simply achieving your 10K steps a day. With real-time metrics and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone,* you’ll hit your goals like never before.

  • WOMEN’S HEALTH INSIGHTS—SE 3 has advanced sensors that track your wrist temperature while you sleep. With this smartwatch, you can log your periods and symptoms, get period predictions, and get notified of cycle deviations.*
  • GREAT BATTERY LIFE AND FASTER CHARGING—Enjoy a smartwatch with all-day, 18-hour battery life* from sunup to sundown. Then charge up to twice as fast as SE 2* and get up to 8 hours of battery in just 15 minutes.*

However, Apple’s compatibility documentation does not provide a face-by-face matrix proving that Flux is Series 10-only. The defensible distinction is between software availability and hardware-dependent presentation: a supported watch may offer the face, while a larger or differently refreshing display may present its intended visual treatment more fully.

Flux is also not the obvious choice for someone who needs numerous complications. Its design gives the time and animation visual priority, so readers who depend on several pieces of information may find a modular face more useful.

Reflections: polished but primarily decorative

Reflections uses a metallic, sunburst-style dial with a shimmering effect that responds subtly to wrist movement. The result is closer to a piece of digital jewelry than to a dashboard.

The movement response is a visual effect, not a major interactive feature. Its value depends on whether you notice and enjoy that subtle animation. In bright light or at an angle, the metallic treatment may add visual interest; in other situations, the effect may be restrained enough to disappear into the background.

Reflections suits a minimal look, formal clothing, or anyone who prefers a face that complements a watch band rather than displaying a large amount of data. Its trade-off is straightforward: it offers polish at the expense of practical information.

Are these watch faces exclusive to Apple Watch Series 10?

Not according to the available evidence. Apple’s wording says the faces were designed to take advantage of Series 10’s larger display and faster or more flexible refresh behavior, but that is not the same as declaring all three unavailable on earlier compatible models.

Apple’s watchOS 11 compatibility information lists Series 6 and later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), Series 7, Series 8, Series 9, Series 10, Apple Watch Ultra, and Apple Watch Ultra 2. It also requires an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18 or later. Series 4 and Series 5 are listed only through watchOS 10.6.1 and cannot install watchOS 11. See Apple’s compatibility table for the supported-model details.

The phrase “exclusive new watch-face options” is therefore best understood as referring to options introduced for watchOS 11, not automatically as a Series 10-only feature set. Availability can also vary by model, point release, display behavior, and regional or hardware-specific limitations. Do not treat a Series 10 promotional screenshot as representative of every compatible watch.

How to add the faces

From Apple Watch

  1. Touch and hold the current watch face.
  2. Swipe left until the New screen appears.
  3. Tap the Add button.
  4. Swipe through the available faces and choose Photos, Flux, or Reflections.
  5. Configure the available color, layout, complications, or photo options.
  6. Tap Add, or set the face as active if that is the option shown.

Button placement and labels can change between watchOS releases, so archived watchOS 11 screenshots may not exactly match later software. Apple’s current general instructions are in its watch-face management guide.

From the iPhone Watch app

  1. Open the Watch app on the paired iPhone.
  2. Tap Face Gallery to add a face.
  3. Alternatively, open My Watch and use the My Faces area to edit or reorder existing faces.
  4. Select Photos, Flux, or Reflections.
  5. Set the available photo source, color, layout, time position, and complications.
  6. Tap Add or save the changes.

For Photos, look for options such as Featured Photos, an album, manually selected images, dynamic rotation, categories, layout, and time placement. The exact choices depend on the face and software version.

Update requirements

Before installing watchOS 11, update the paired iPhone to the required iOS version. Apple’s update guidance also recommends keeping the watch at least 50 percent charged, placing it on its charger during installation, and maintaining a Wi-Fi-connected iPhone with Bluetooth connectivity. Allow free storage for the update. The general process is documented in Apple’s watchOS update guide.

Troubleshooting

The face does not appear

  1. Confirm that the watch model supports watchOS 11.
  2. Check Watch app → General → Software Update and confirm the update completed.
  3. Verify that the paired iPhone runs iOS 18 or later.
  4. Open Face Gallery instead of relying only on the watch-face carousel.
  5. Restart both the iPhone and Apple Watch.
  6. If the face appears incomplete, remove it and add it again.

If a face is available on one model but not another, avoid assuming the difference is a bug. Hardware, point-release, regional, and accessibility differences can affect what is shown.

Photos keeps choosing the wrong images

Switch to a manually selected set or a smaller album. Remove screenshots, duplicates, and images with awkward crops. Portraits and subjects separated clearly from their backgrounds tend to work better compositionally. If the time covers the subject, change its position or choose another layout.

The effect looks different from Apple’s screenshots

Appearance can change with case and display size, always-on state, brightness, ambient light, wrist angle, selected color or photograph, accessibility settings such as reduced motion, and the installed watchOS point release. These faces are not rendered identically in every viewing condition.

What about third-party watch faces?

Apple Watch is not an unrestricted watch-face platform in the same way as Wear OS. Third-party apps can offer face-like experiences, complications, shortcuts, or catalogs of designs, but an app does not automatically replace Apple’s system-face architecture in every respect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple supports sharing customized Apple Watch face files in watchOS 7 and later, but that is different from installing arbitrary native system faces. Apple’s face-sharing documentation and watch-face design guidance explain those boundaries.

Apps such as WatchMaker may appeal to readers who want a larger catalog or creator-made designs. Check the app’s current watchOS support, privacy terms, subscriptions, and whether a design is a true system face or an app-dependent workaround. Do not expect it to reproduce native Photos, Flux, or Reflections behavior exactly.

Which watchOS 11 face should you use?

Choose Photos if personalization matters most

Photos is the strongest choice for family pictures, pets, travel memories, and a display that changes throughout the day. Choose manual selection when you want control; choose dynamic curation when variety matters more than predictability.

Choose Flux if visual novelty matters most

Flux is the most distinctive design. It makes time itself part of the face and should appeal to readers who prefer a bold graphic treatment over a conventional dial. Its visual character is likely to benefit most from the larger display characteristics Apple highlighted for Series 10.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Reflections if style comes first

Reflections is the minimalist, jewelry-like option. It is best when the watch needs to look elegant rather than act as an information center.

Keep a modular face for information

If calendar appointments, weather, activity, battery, or workout access are the priority, the new faces may be compromises rather than upgrades. Keep a modular face in the rotation and switch to Photos, Flux, or Reflections when appearance matters more.
