Pixel Watch can now keep a low-power version of active Media Controls, Timer, and Stopwatch screens visible when the display enters always-on mode. The rollout began in December 2025 and depends on Wear OS, Google Clock, and Media Controls updates—not just the watch’s main system software.
This is not the full-color app interface running continuously. Instead, supported screens switch to a simplified, less frequently updated design intended for quick glances and lower power use.

What changes in the Pixel Watch AOD view?
Normally, when the Pixel Watch display times out, an active app may be replaced by a blurred background and centered clock. With the newer app-aware AOD behavior, supported Google apps can retain their context on screen while the watch is in its low-power state.
The feature was reported during the Wear OS 6 period. It is separate from the broader media-routing features introduced later with Wear OS 7.

- Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]
Media Controls
Media Controls remains visible instead of reverting to a generic watch face. Playback buttons change to a thinner, outline-style appearance designed for AOD. Waking the watch returns the normal control layout.
Whether controls appear for a particular music, podcast, or video service depends on that app’s media-session and Wear OS integration. The feature is not a guarantee that every third-party media app will expose identical controls.
Timer
The low-power Timer view keeps the timer context visible but removes detail:

- Pause, restart, and end controls become thin outlines.
- Seconds are replaced with dashes.
That design is intentional. The AOD screen is a glanceable representation, not a full-resolution precision timer. Wake the display when you need the normal controls or the most precise reading.

Stopwatch
The Stopwatch AOD view similarly reduces visual activity:
- The ring and increment markings disappear.
- Controls use hollow or outlined buttons.
- Milliseconds are omitted.
In other words, the watch preserves the fact that a stopwatch is running without displaying every detail continuously.
What software is required?
The Timer and Stopwatch changes were associated with Google Clock version 6.11. Media Controls also needs to be updated, although a definitive current version number for that app has not been published in the available documentation.

You should have:
- A Pixel Watch running the relevant Wear OS 6-era software or a later compatible release.
- An updated Google Clock app for Timer and Stopwatch behavior.
- An updated Media Controls app.
- Always-on display enabled.
The feature was reported on recent Pixel Watch models, including the Pixel Watch 2, Pixel Watch 3, and Pixel Watch 4 as Wear OS 6 targets. Google has not published a clearly labeled, model-by-model compatibility table specifically for this AOD behavior, so availability can vary by watch model, software version, app version, and staged activation.

How to update a Pixel Watch
Update watch apps
- Press the crown on the watch.
- Open Play Store.
- Tap Manage apps.
- Tap Update all.
Keep the watch connected to the internet while the apps install.
Check the watch system update
- Swipe down on the watch.
- Tap Settings.
- Open System.
- Tap System updates.
Google recommends updating while the watch is on its charger, has at least 50% battery, and is connected to Wi-Fi. See Google’s official Pixel Watch update instructions.
Update the phone app
- Open the Google Play Store on your Android phone.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Select Manage apps & device.
- Open Updates available.
- Update Google Pixel Watch if it is listed.
How to enable the feature
There does not appear to be a separate user-facing switch for Media Controls, Timer, or Stopwatch AOD. The relevant behavior should activate automatically when the supported app is updated and watch-wide AOD is enabled.
To check AOD:
- Swipe down on the watch.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Turn on Always-on Display.
Google notes that Battery Saver disables AOD. If Battery Saver is active, these app-specific low-power screens will not remain visible. AOD also reduces battery life; Google’s estimates for earlier Pixel Watch generations were up to 24 hours with AOD enabled, while the Pixel Watch 4 is listed at up to 30 hours for the 41 mm model and 40 hours for the 45 mm model. Actual endurance depends on usage and settings. See Google’s AOD and battery guidance.

- Stay on top of activity, calories burned, and more with Fitbit activity tracking
- Track your heart rate and get insight into your sleep
- Save time with things like Google Wallet for contactless payments, turn-by-turn directions using Maps, and event notifications from Calendar
- Stay connected and productive wherever you go; respond to messages, manage your inbox, and make calls right from your wrist
If Media Controls or Timer AOD does not appear
- Confirm Settings > Display > Always-on Display is enabled.
- Turn off Battery Saver.
- Open the watch Play Store and choose Manage apps > Update all.
- Check Settings > System > System updates.
- Update the Google Pixel Watch app on your phone.
- Restart both the watch and phone.
- Retry the update while connected to Wi-Fi and the charger.
- Allow time for a staged app configuration or server-side activation to reach the watch.
If the watch will not update, Google’s troubleshooting guidance says to restart it by holding the crown and side button for about 20 seconds, then retry. It also suggests turning Bluetooth off, turning Wi-Fi on, and checking for system updates again.
A current system update does not necessarily mean every watch app is current. Conversely, installing Google Clock 6.11 or a Media Controls update does not guarantee that a staged feature configuration is already active. Two otherwise similar watches may temporarily show different behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Battery and usability trade-offs
AOD is useful because it keeps information available without requiring a wrist raise or tap, but it consumes more power than allowing the display to turn off completely. The simplified interface reduces visual updating, yet it does not eliminate the battery cost of AOD.
The low-power view also sacrifices information. Timer seconds and stopwatch milliseconds are deliberately absent, and the controls may be less interactive than they are when the watch is fully awake. If the display looks static or does not provide the precision you need, wake the watch before relying on it for an exact timer or stopwatch reading. Reports of timers not visibly changing continuously in AOD should be treated as device- and behavior-specific rather than a universal fault.
Best Value
- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
- Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]
- Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]
Do not confuse this with Wear OS 7 media routing
Wear OS 7 introduced broader controls for playback and audio output, including switching playback between devices such as headphones and speakers. That is a separate capability from the AOD redesign described here.
Likewise, Google TV and Google Home remote controls are different from the watch’s Media Controls app. If your goal is controlling a television or smart-home device, use the relevant remote functionality rather than expecting this AOD feature to provide it.
Should you buy a newer Pixel Watch for this?
Usually, not for this feature alone. If your current Pixel Watch receives the required Wear OS and app updates, buying a new watch may not add anything essential to the AOD experience. A newer model can still make sense for battery life, health features, performance, or other hardware differences, but the AOD change by itself is not a strong upgrade reason.
