The Rado DiaStar Original x Tej Chauhan Special Edition (ref. R12165155) combines the DiaStar’s recognizable 1962-era silhouette with a sculptural grey rubber strap, vivid color accents and a modern automatic movement. It is a distinctive choice for someone who wants a watch that draws attention; its unusual shape and palette make it a less natural pick for anyone seeking a discreet everyday design.
What makes the design different?
Rado announced the collaboration on 7 February 2025 as a reinterpretation of the DiaStar Original, retaining its recognizable bezel shape while giving the watch a more futuristic character. The original DiaStar launched in April 1962, according to the Swatch Group archive. The result places a familiar, broad bezel around a dial and strap that feel deliberately contemporary.
The black concave dial is punctuated by silver and blue minute tracks, applied five-minute indexes and a neon-yellow seconds hand. At 3 o’clock, a day-and-date display uses Tej Chauhan’s proprietary font; the hour and minute hands are luminous. The radial-faceted sapphire crystal has an inner anti-reflective coating.
The grey, pillow-shaped rubber strap is one of the watch’s most distinctive elements, not just a practical way to secure it. In a Wallpaper* interview published 18 January 2026, Chauhan said, “I wanted to create an object that you’d want to pick up, something with an invitation to interact.” He described the strap’s comfort as “slightly sci-fi and not gendered.” These are the designer’s descriptions, not independent wear-test findings.

Rado says calibre R764 is tested in five positions and uses an antimagnetic Nivachron hairspring. Those specifications describe the movement, but do not establish a daily-wear accuracy result. The watch’s 10-bar rating is a stated water-resistance specification, not a reason to disregard care or maintenance guidance.
Rado describes Ceramos as a lightweight, scratch-resistant combination of ceramic and metal alloy. That is the brand’s material characterization; it does not mean the watch is scratchproof.

Heritage, special-edition details and care
The display caseback has a sapphire window engraved “SPECIAL EDITION TEJ CHAUHAN.” Rado and Swatch Group use “special edition” for the collaboration, but the available product materials do not establish a numbered production limit.
Chauhan told Wallpaper*: “This is an object that requires care, including adjusting the time it shows every six months, and paying attention to water and other outside elements.” That is his personal guidance, not a published accuracy specification or a substitute for Rado’s care instructions. The India listing notes that retailers may hold stock at a different MRP depending on purchase date. These are market-specific figures, not interchangeable or universal current prices. Check Rado’s page for your country and confirm the price with a local retailer.
The design is best suited to a buyer who actively wants a conversation-starting watch and values the contrast between DiaStar heritage and Chauhan’s futuristic styling. The 38 mm diameter offers a useful point of reference, but the broad, sculptural bezel and pillow-shaped strap will shape its presence on the wrist as much as the diameter does. If you are choosing it as a gift, consider whether the recipient enjoys expressive design and wears rubber straps; the bold yellow, blue and grey details are central to its character.
