The Ressence Type 3 puts its animated mechanical display in an oil-filled upper chamber. Curved discs rotate to show the time and other indications on a single convex surface; the oil is there to reduce the visual distortion caused by light refraction. The base movement remains in a separate chamber. The specifications below are for the Type 3 Black listing, not every Type 3 generation, and are manufacturer-published rather than hands-on test results.
How does the Ressence Type 3 work?
A conventional watch keeps its dial still while hands rotate above it. The Type 3 instead moves the display itself: its ROCS (Ressence Orbital Convex System) uses curved, rotating discs to present the time and other information across a convex surface. Ressence describes the discs as orbiting like moons around a planet, while keeping familiar time-reading patterns within an animated display. Ressence’s ROCS explanation calls this an animated, single-surface display.
The Type 3 Black listing specifies ROCS 3.6, driven by the minute axle of a customized 2824/2 base calibre. The display module occupies the oil-filled upper chamber; the base movement sits separately below it. Linked magnets transmit minute information across a titanium-grade membrane between the two sections. Ressence says conductors concentrate the magnetic fields and a specially designed alloy helps protect the regulating organ from residual fields. What the Type 3 Black displays
For the Black 3.6 model, Ressence lists hours, minutes, a 180-second runner, day, date and oil temperature. The runner’s duration is model-specific: the general ROCS page gives 360 seconds for the Type 3, while the Black listing says 180 seconds. The 180-second figure applies to the Black listing and should not be generalized to other Type 3 generations.

Is the Ressence Type 3 filled with oil?
Yes. On the Type 3 Black, the upper of two sealed chambers contains 3.75 ml of oil, according to the manufacturer’s current listing. The base movement is not submerged. Ressence says oil in the display chamber counters the light-refraction distortion that would otherwise affect how the display appears.
Why the watch has bellows
Oil changes volume with temperature, so the system needs room to compensate. Ressence says seven bellows expand or compress as the oil’s internal volume changes, over a stated range of -5°C to +55°C. The company says it fills and seals Type 3 and Type 5 watches at -5°C, when the oil is at its minimum volume. Its temperature indicator shows the oil’s internal temperature, which reflects both ambient conditions and wrist temperature. Can you read the time easily on a Type 3?
The display preserves familiar indications such as hours and minutes, but arranges them on rotating discs rather than fixed hands over a stationary dial. That animation is central to the design, so a prospective owner should consider whether they enjoy reading a moving display and are comfortable learning its layout. Ressence presents ROCS as retaining traditional time-reading patterns; that is the manufacturer’s design claim, not a measured legibility assessment. No physical inspection or wear test is available here to support claims about real-world legibility, glare or ease of reading.
How big is the Type 3?
The Type 3 Black listing gives a 44 mm diameter and 15 mm thickness. Those figures describe the case, not how it will sit or feel on a particular wrist. Without a physical fitting, comfort, perceived size and fit cannot be judged; buyers should compare the dimensions with a watch they already wear or try the specific model in person if possible.

Is the Ressence Type 3 waterproof?
The Type 3 Black listing uses the wording “splash-resistance.” It does not establish a general waterproof claim or a dive rating, so do not infer suitability for swimming, bathing or diving from the presence of sealed oil chambers. The display chamber’s oil system and the watch’s resistance to external water are separate matters.
Ressence says each cased-up watch undergoes 500 hours of internal R500H quality control, including rating, water-resistance, power-reserve, shock, temperature and aesthetic checks. This is the manufacturer’s description of its process, not an independent test of a particular watch or a substitute for a stated water-resistance rating. Ressence’s R500H page describes the checks.

The Type 3 Black listing states a two-year warranty and directs owners to maintenance information. Ressence’s manuals and guides page offers a Type 3 video guide and PDF manuals covering Type 3.0 through Type 3.6 Marc Newson, including reading, setting, winding and strap changes. Use the instructions for the exact generation: procedures can differ.
The Black listing’s 22/22 mm strap measurement can help narrow a replacement search, but does not guarantee every third-party 22 mm strap will fit correctly or match the original taper, thickness, buckle or attachment. Verify the exact model and attachment dimensions before ordering.
