The watch’s appeal lies in a compact, vintage-inspired design paired with modern specifications: Rado’s 2019 limited edition had a 37 mm steel case, sapphire crystal and an automatic movement rated for up to 80 hours of power reserve.
What made the 2019 Golden Horse notable?
The Golden Horse connects a contemporary reissue to Rado’s early history. In its 2019 limited-edition announcement, Rado said the Golden Horse was among the watches in the first collection launched under the Rado name in 1957. The 2019 watch looked back to that period, while using materials and movement specifications suited to a modern wristwatch.
Rado described the 2019 limited edition as a faithful, vintage-inspired reissue. Its 37 mm stainless-steel case framed a curved crimson-and-black dial, with two gold-coloured seahorses, a date at 3 o’clock and the moving anchor symbol. The date numerals were red on white. A printed calf-leather strap had a crocodile-flank pattern.
The crystal was sapphire rather than the acrylic glass used on the original, and Rado specified an ETA C07 automatic movement with up to 80 hours of power reserve. These details come from Rado’s 2019 announcement; they are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance-test results. Rado’s 2019 Golden Horse Limited Edition announcement

What did “one of the best” mean?
The phrase comes from the headline of James Robinson’s Time+Tide hands-on review, published December 19, 2019. It communicates the reviewer’s opinion of that year’s vintage-inspired reissues and homages; it should not be read as an official award, a measured category ranking or a consensus verdict. The case for the watch is readily understood from its specification and design: restrained dimensions, distinctive vintage character and modern sapphire crystal and automatic movement. Those qualities explain the positive assessment without establishing that it outperformed competing watches.

Which Golden Horse are you comparing?
“Golden Horse” refers to more than one design. The 2019 collection also included larger, more contemporary Golden Horse Automatic models. Rado described those as having a bigger case, bolder bezel and more distinctive crown than the vintage-styled 37 mm watches. Do not assume that a specification for one Golden Horse applies to another: identify the edition and reference before comparing size, movement or materials. Rado’s 2019 Golden Horse Automatic collection announcement
Rado’s current product page lists Golden Horse Automatic reference R33930203. It specifies a 37 mm case, 10.8 mm thickness, automatic R763 caliber, 80-hour power reserve, stainless-steel case and bracelet, and a Nivachron hairspring. This is useful current catalog context, but it does not establish that R33930203 is identical to the 2019 limited edition Robinson reviewed. Catalog details and availability can change. How to assess a Golden Horse listing
Before comparing listings or deciding whether a particular watch matches the review, check the details that distinguish one version from another:
- Edition and reference: Confirm whether the watch is the 2019 limited edition, a contemporary Golden Horse Automatic or another reference.
- Case and design: The 2019 limited edition described by Rado had a 37 mm steel case and the curved crimson-and-black dial. The larger contemporary designs had different styling.
- Movement: The 2019 release named the ETA C07; the current page for R33930203 lists Rado caliber R763. Do not treat the movement names as interchangeable.
- Crystal and materials: Rado specified sapphire crystal and a patterned calf-leather strap for the 2019 limited edition. The current R33930203 page describes a steel bracelet.
- Listing condition and documentation: Verify the actual reference, condition and included documentation with the seller; the cited model specifications do not establish the state of an individual watch.
What the sources do not establish
The 2019 review’s superlative is an attributed opinion, and Rado’s specifications describe the models it announced. These sources do not provide an independent side-by-side test, a formal award or evidence that the watch is currently available in a particular market. Rado’s Golden Horse collection page describes Swiss-made status and a five-year warranty at collection level, but warranty coverage for a specific watch depends on the exact product and market; confirm it with Rado or the seller.
