Yes—but the wording needs a date and an attribution. EssilorLuxottica CEO Francesco Milleri said in February 2025 that more than 2 million Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses had sold since their October 2023 launch. It was a genuine cumulative milestone, but it was not a standalone Meta sales disclosure and should not be presented as the current Ray-Ban-only total in 2026.
The original report came during EssilorLuxottica’s discussion of its fourth-quarter 2024 results. Later figures cover broader product families and different time periods, so they cannot simply be added to or substituted for the 2-million figure.

What the 2-million claim actually means
The reported figure was more than 2 million units sold since launch, not exactly 2 million units sold in a single year. It referred to Ray-Ban Meta, the second-generation smart-glasses line announced in September 2023 and made available from October 2023.

“EssilorLuxottica said the Meta partnership had sold more than 2 million Ray-Ban Meta glasses by February 2025.”
It is less precise to say that “Meta announced it had sold 2 million units.” The cited evidence does not show Meta publishing a standalone Ray-Ban sales report with that figure.
UploadVR’s report on the milestone also linked it to EssilorLuxottica’s plan to expand production. The Information likewise attributed the manufacturing update to EssilorLuxottica.

The later 7-million number is significant, but it is not a like-for-like update. It reportedly covers Ray-Ban and Oakley Meta combined sales during 2025, whereas the 2-million figure covered Ray-Ban Meta sales accumulated from launch through the February 2025 disclosure.

Ray-Ban Meta is not the same as every Meta smart-glasses product
The original claim concerns Ray-Ban Meta, not the earlier Ray-Ban Stories and not every smart-glasses product sold through Meta’s partnership with EssilorLuxottica.
That distinction matters because the portfolio expanded after the 2023 launch:
- Ray-Ban Meta: the everyday camera-and-audio glasses line at the center of the 2-million milestone.
- Oakley Meta: a separate, more performance-oriented line introduced later.
- Later Ray-Ban Meta generations: newer models with updated hardware and features.
Meta has subsequently used broader language such as “millions of units sold since launch.” Its September 2025 announcement also described Ray-Ban Meta as the world’s best-selling AI glasses, citing IDC data as of July 2025. That should be read narrowly: it is a claim about the AI-glasses category and a stated IDC data cutoff, not a claim that the product is the best-selling wearable of any kind.

Why the partnership likely helped
Ray-Ban Meta combines cameras, open-ear audio and voice-controlled features with a conventional Ray-Ban frame. That makes it less visually conspicuous than many futuristic wearable devices and gives buyers a familiar eyewear brand rather than an entirely new form factor.
EssilorLuxottica’s brand and retail infrastructure also likely helped the glasses reach ordinary eyewear shoppers. Meta contributed software, AI and platform integration, while EssilorLuxottica supplied the Ray-Ban brand and eyewear expertise. The available sales disclosure does not, however, establish that AI was the main reason people bought the product. Design, camera functionality, audio, brand recognition, distribution and marketing may all have contributed.
Feature availability has also changed over time. Meta’s launch announcement said Meta AI initially began as a beta feature in the United States. Availability can vary by country, language, account, phone, software version and regulatory approval, so sales figures should not be treated as evidence that every buyer received the same AI experience.
Production capacity is not the same as sales
After the milestone, EssilorLuxottica planned to increase annual Ray-Ban Meta production capacity to more than 10 million units by the end of 2026. That indicates that the companies expected demand and wanted manufacturing headroom.

It does not prove that 10 million units had been sold, nor does it establish sell-through, active users or profitability. Capacity means the number of products manufacturers aim to be able to produce. It is not a sales forecast.
Likewise, multiplying a retail price by 2 million would not reveal Meta’s revenue. The public material does not disclose the partners’ revenue split, manufacturing costs, retailer margins, prescription-lens revenue, returns, discounts or any software revenue attributable to the glasses.

It does show
- Ray-Ban Meta achieved a substantial cumulative sales milestone relatively early in its product cycle.
- The Meta–EssilorLuxottica partnership developed enough momentum to support planned manufacturing expansion.
- The product had broader market traction than a niche developer-oriented wearable.
It does not show
- That Meta alone sold more than 2 million units.
- That exactly 2 million pairs were sold.
- How many units were sold in each country, quarter or model.
- How many glasses remain active or in use.
- Whether the figure represents only final consumer sell-through, or how returns and channel inventory were treated.
- How profitable the product is for Meta or EssilorLuxottica.
The disclosure used “more than 2 million,” so the number should not be silently converted into exactly 2,000,000. Public reporting also does not provide a detailed model-by-model or region-by-region breakdown.
What buyers are looking at now
The original 2023 Ray-Ban Meta models should not be treated as identical to Gen 2. Meta announced Gen 2 in September 2025 with claims including up to eight hours of typical-use battery life and 3K Ultra HD video. Pricing and availability vary by country, frame, lens type, prescription configuration and promotion.

For example, Meta’s US buying pages have shown changing price presentations, while its refurbished store has listed older Gen 1 models at lower starting prices. Those page prices are time-sensitive and should be checked directly before purchase:
Ray-Ban Meta is a reasonable fit for someone who wants camera glasses, open-ear audio and a voice assistant in a familiar frame. It is not a heads-up-display product, a fully offline assistant or a camera-free wearable. Buyers should also check the exact AI features available in their country and language.
Verdict
The claim is historically accurate but currently misleading without context. More than 2 million Ray-Ban Meta glasses had been sold by the time EssilorLuxottica disclosed the milestone in February 2025. As of the latest information covered here, that remains a valid historical benchmark—not a verified current Ray-Ban-only cumulative sales total.
