REC says it reclaims metal from Porsche 911 body parts for the dial, preserving marks from the donor material and sealing the surface under lacquer. The rest of the watch uses conventional watch components. The DNA Edition 901-03 is one specific example; its listed specifications, price and stock status are edition-specific and may change.
What does “made from a Porsche 911” mean?
REC’s defining material claim concerns the dial. The company says it takes salvaged exterior metal from a Porsche 911, strips it to bare metal, then lacquers and seals it. Natural marks and imperfections are intended to remain visible, so each dial’s appeal is partly in its surface character rather than a perfectly uniform finish. REC’s official 901-03 page describes the concept this way: “At the heart of every 901 is a dial made from an original Porsche 911.” REC DNA Edition 901-03
This is a material-provenance claim, not a claim that the case, movement, crystal, strap or other components are recycled Porsche parts. On the 901-03, REC lists a stainless-steel case, a Miyota automatic movement, sapphire crystal and calf-leather strap.
How REC connects a dial to its donor car
REC describes a VIN plaque on the watch and a personalized, NFC-enabled storycard as links to the donor vehicle. Its original project FAQ says the card includes a documentary about the specific car. These features are the company’s provenance and storytelling system: the cited sources do not independently authenticate the material in an individual watch or verify its donor history. REC also states in that FAQ that its watches and products are not associated with or supported by Porsche AG or its affiliates, so the 901 should not be presented as an official Porsche product or collaboration. These figures describe what the model page lists; they do not establish measured accuracy, real-world water performance, comfort or durability. A 3 ATM rating is a modest water-resistance specification, not a basis for treating the watch as suitable for swimming or diving.

What is known about price and availability?
REC’s 901-03 page displayed a price of USD 1,895 and marked the model sold out when that page was indexed. Both price and stock can change; check the current REC 901-03 listing or a seller’s live listing before making a purchase. The available information does not establish current stock at Amazon or another retailer, nor whether any third-party listing is authorized.
How to assess a REC 901 edition
“REC 901” covers more than one version, and specifications should not be transferred from the 901-03 to a 901-RS, RWB or earlier model. REC’s launch announcement in 2017 described the first collection as using an automatic mechanical Miyota movement; the 901-03 page names the Miyota 9100. - Donor provenance: Check what the specific listing says about the donor car, VIN plaque and storycard, and what documentation accompanies that unit.
- Dial: Compare the stated material source and treatment, and inspect photos for the particular dial’s marks and patina.
- Movement and functions: Verify the movement name and listed complications for that model rather than relying on a collection-wide description.
- Fit and wear: Compare diameter, thickness, weight, case treatment and strap or bracelet to your preferences.
- Practical limits and ownership terms: Check water resistance, warranty, edition size, current price and availability on the relevant model page.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
The cited material consists of REC’s product and launch copy and its project FAQ. It supports describing the brand’s material sourcing claim, the provenance features it says accompany the watch, and the 901-03 specifications it publishes. It does not provide independent movement testing, timing or accuracy measurements, hands-on comfort or durability findings, or authentication of a particular unit. REC’s 2017 announcement also says that “901” was the name originally intended for the 911 and attributes the eventual change to a Peugeot naming-rights claim; that historical explanation is REC’s account, not independently corroborated here.
