Xiaomi launched the Redmi Watch 5 Active in India on August 27, 2024, at a launch price of ₹2,799. Sales were scheduled to start from noon on September 3 through Xiaomi’s website, Amazon, Flipkart and offline Xiaomi retail channels.
The budget smartwatch offers a large 2-inch LCD, Xiaomi HyperOS, Bluetooth calling, basic health tracking and Xiaomi’s claimed battery life of up to 18 days. It is best understood as an affordable phone companion—not a Wear OS alternative, standalone phone or confirmed GPS watch.

Redmi Watch 5 Active price and availability in India
The Redmi Watch 5 Active launched at ₹2,799 in two colours: Midnight Black and Matte Silver. Xiaomi scheduled the first sale for noon on September 3, 2024, through its website, Amazon, Flipkart and offline retail stores. The watch was unveiled alongside Xiaomi’s X Pro QLED 2024 television range and the Xiaomi Power Bank 4i 20,000mAh.

Xiaomi’s user manual provides additional hardware details, including the battery, Bluetooth version and water-resistance rating.
Large LCD display, but not AMOLED
The watch has a 2-inch rectangular LCD with a 320 × 385-pixel resolution and peak brightness of up to 500 nits. Its large surface should make notifications, controls and call interfaces easier to read than on smaller budget watches. Raise-to-wake and double-tap-to-wake are supported, while covering the screen with your palm can turn it off.
The important trade-off is the panel type. This is an LCD, not an AMOLED display. AMOLED watches generally provide deeper blacks, higher perceived contrast and more premium visuals, and some support an always-on display. The Redmi Watch 5 Active instead prioritises a large screen and battery endurance at a low price.

The Redmi Watch 5 Active runs Xiaomi HyperOS out of the box, but the name should not be confused with the smartphone version of HyperOS or Google’s Wear OS. It does not establish support for Android app installation, Google Play apps or the broader third-party smartwatch ecosystem found on Wear OS devices.
Pairing, configuration, watch-face downloads and synchronisation require Xiaomi’s Mi Fitness app. Xiaomi specifically says that the older Xiaomi Wear app is not compatible with this model. Install Mi Fitness before pairing, keep it updated and allow the Bluetooth, notification and background permissions it requests. Xiaomi’s support page confirms the app requirement.

Bluetooth calling requires your phone
The watch includes a speaker and microphone system for Bluetooth calls, along with an environmental-noise-cancellation claim in launch material. You can handle incoming calls and use the watch as a short-range call interface when it is connected to your smartphone.
This is not cellular calling. The Redmi Watch 5 Active has no verified LTE or eSIM support in the reviewed material, so it cannot replace a phone or make independent calls when the phone is absent. Call performance will depend on the Bluetooth connection, phone position, surroundings and microphone performance. Launch coverage also mentioned Alexa support, but availability can depend on region and software, so buyers should confirm it in the Mi Fitness experience.

Health and fitness tracking
Reported features include heart-rate monitoring, blood-oxygen or SpO2 monitoring, sleep tracking, stress monitoring, step counting and calorie estimates. The watch also offers more than 140 sports modes and more than 200 watch faces, although available faces and features may vary by region and software version.
These functions are best treated as wellness and activity indicators. Readings can be affected by movement, loose fit, sweat, cold skin, tattoos, skin contact and device positioning. The watch is not a medical diagnostic device and should not replace a clinical pulse oximeter, ECG equipment or professional medical advice.
Battery life: up to 18 days, according to Xiaomi
The Redmi Watch 5 Active has a 470mAh battery. Xiaomi claims up to 18 days in typical use, but that is a manufacturer estimate rather than a guaranteed everyday result.

Battery life can fall substantially with frequent Bluetooth calls, many notifications, high brightness, repeated screen activation, raise-to-wake gestures, continuous heart-rate or SpO2 monitoring, regular workouts and frequent speaker or microphone use. Poor Bluetooth connectivity can also cause repeated reconnections. A result well below 18 days does not by itself prove that the watch is defective; usage settings and software behaviour matter.

Water resistance: use 5ATM as the safer reference
Xiaomi’s user manual specifies 5ATM water resistance. Some launch reports described the watch as IPX8-rated, creating an inconsistency. For practical purposes, the manual is the safer reference, and the watch should be described as water-resistant rather than waterproof.
Do not use it for diving or high-pressure water. Avoid hot tubs, saunas, detergents and solvents, and do not charge it while wet. Water resistance can weaken with age, impacts, chemical exposure and repairs.

The watch works with Android phones and iPhones through Mi Fitness. Xiaomi regional specifications list Android 8.0 or later and iOS 12 or later, while some secondary listings cite an older Android minimum. Because published requirements vary by region, check the India product or app requirements before purchase.
If pairing fails:
- Update Mi Fitness and enable Bluetooth.
- Grant the app the notification, Bluetooth and background permissions it needs.
- Remove stale Redmi Watch 5 Active Bluetooth pairings from the phone.
- Restart both devices.
- Start pairing from inside Mi Fitness rather than the phone’s ordinary Bluetooth menu.
If notifications stop arriving, check Mi Fitness notification access, the phone’s notification settings, battery-optimisation restrictions and background permissions. Menu names differ between Android manufacturers.

What the Redmi Watch 5 Active does not offer
- No confirmed built-in GPS: the reviewed India specifications do not clearly list GNSS or GPS. Buyers wanting phone-free route tracking should choose a model with confirmed GPS.
- No verified LTE or eSIM: calling depends on a nearby connected phone.
- No Wear OS app ecosystem: HyperOS does not imply Google Play or unrestricted app installation.
- No medical-grade monitoring: heart-rate and SpO2 functions are for wellness tracking.
- No AMOLED display: the screen is a 2-inch LCD.
Do not confuse this model with the similarly named Redmi Watch 5 Lite, which is marketed in Indian coverage with GPS and an AMOLED display. Those features should not be attributed to the Watch 5 Active.
Is the Redmi Watch 5 Active worth buying?
The Redmi Watch 5 Active is a sensible budget choice when the priorities are a large readable display, Bluetooth calling, basic fitness tracking and long claimed battery life. It is particularly suited to users who already use Xiaomi’s Mi Fitness app and do not need advanced smartwatch applications.
It is a poor fit for runners and cyclists who need phone-free GPS, users seeking LTE calling, buyers who want premium AMOLED visuals or anyone expecting ECG, advanced training metrics or medically validated readings. Availability is also a consideration because Xiaomi’s inspected India listing showed the Midnight Black version out of stock.
Alternatives to consider
Redmi Watch 5 Lite
The Redmi Watch 5 Lite is the more relevant option for buyers who prioritise an AMOLED display and confirmed GPS-oriented fitness features in the Indian model. Xiaomi’s inspected listing showed it at around ₹3,999, making it more expensive than the Watch 5 Active’s launch positioning.

The older Redmi Watch 3 Active may make sense if it is substantially cheaper. Its official India specifications list a 1.83-inch LCD, Bluetooth calling, Bluetooth 5.3, 5ATM water resistance and up to 12 days of typical battery life. It gives up the Watch 5 Active’s larger display and longer claimed endurance. See Xiaomi’s specifications.
Redmi Watch Move
Xiaomi India’s catalogue showed the Redmi Watch Move at approximately ₹2,499 during the research period. It may be easier to source or newer, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed upgrade without comparing its confirmed display, GPS, calling, battery and software specifications.
