Renaud Tixier introduced its first watch, the Monday, in March 2024 with a distinctive idea at its center: a micro-rotor fitted with a spring-and-flywheel mechanism the brand calls the “dancer.” It was designed to help the rotor respond to small movements and to provide shock protection. The launch report did not quantify any efficiency gain, so the mechanism’s intent is clearer than its measured performance.
Why the Monday mattered as a debut
Renaud Tixier was presented in a March 18, 2024 report as an independent Swiss brand based in Nyon, founded through the collaboration of Dominique Renaud and Julien Tixier. The Monday was described as the brand’s first watch. The founders’ stated ambition was to explore seven watchmaking principles through a sequence of projects, with plans to work with third parties on development and production. Those were launch-era plans, not confirmation of later activity.
The collaboration paired Dominique Renaud’s experience at Audemars Piguet and as co-founder of Renaud & Papi with Julien Tixier’s hands-on work developing the mechanism into a watch prototype and carrying out artisanal movement work. The Monday’s debut was therefore framed around a specific mechanical proposition rather than simply a new name or case design.
Why rethink the micro-rotor?
A micro-rotor is a compact oscillating weight that winds an automatic watch. Its smaller size can make it easier to build into a relatively slim movement, but the launch report described a trade-off: less mass and leverage can make it harder to generate winding force. It also said small, jolting everyday movements may not keep the rotor moving effectively. This is the report’s explanation of the engineering challenge, not a universal performance finding for every micro-rotor design.

What the “dancer” mechanism is meant to do
Dominique Renaud’s proposed answer was a spring-driven assembly placed around the inner perimeter of the rotor. The report describes the “dancer” as combining a spring and flywheel to boost the rotor’s response, while also acting as a shock absorber. Julien Tixier developed the concept through a large-scale model and a watch prototype, according to the same account.
The distinction between design intent and demonstrated result matters. The launch report quoted the brand: “By how much? It is too early to say: no existing control tool is capable of quantifying the difference it will make.” The dancer was intended to improve winding efficiency, but the report supplied no quantified gain or independent test showing that it outperformed another micro-rotor. It mentioned an expected assessment of a watch prototype, but no later result is established here.

What the launch-era price and production figures mean
Fratello reported a pre-tax price estimate of CHF 79,000 and an estimated total production of 62 watches. Both are historical launch-era estimates from 2024; they do not establish current pricing, production, stock or availability.

How to assess the innovation
The Monday’s mechanical distinction is the dancer’s integration into a micro-rotor and its dual intended role: helping the rotor react to small movements and providing shock protection. The available launch account documents the concept and the reported movement specification, but not a measured efficiency improvement. That makes the dancer an interesting engineering proposal, not a proven performance advantage on the evidence available.
For readers comparing it with another micro-rotor watch, the useful questions are whether winding architecture has been tested, what the movement offers in reserve and construction, how the cases compare in thickness and diameter, and what materials, finishing, water resistance, price and current availability are documented. Each competitor’s current details would need separate verification.
