Resonance in Watchmaking Explained: How F.P.Journe’s Watch Works

Resonance in watchmaking is the interaction of two oscillators. See how F.P.Journe’s wristwatch applies the principle, its history, and the limits of the accuracy claims.

In watchmaking, resonance describes two oscillators influencing one another. F.P.Journe’s Chronomètre à Résonance brings the idea to the wrist with two balance wheels designed to interact and, when properly adjusted, oscillate in opposition. That is the mechanism’s intended behavior—not proof that the watch will keep better time than a conventional watch.

What resonance means in a watch

A mechanical watch’s balance wheel oscillates to regulate the movement. In a resonance watch, the key idea is that two such oscillators are close enough to influence one another. They are not simply two independent time displays: their interaction is the defining feature.

F.P.Journe’s account says the two balances in its Chronomètre à Résonance can harmonize and oscillate in opposition when adjusted appropriately. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry describes each balance as alternately acting as an exciter and a resonator. In that account, a disturbance that speeds one balance slows the other, and the pair tends back toward harmony. These descriptions explain the intended effect of this design; they should not be treated as a universal guarantee or as evidence of superior accuracy. How the idea reached the wrist

The historical account begins with Christiaan Huygens, who observed that nearby pendulum clocks mounted on the same wall could influence one another. Antide Janvier later developed a construction using two pendulums, and Abraham-Louis Breguet applied the idea in clocks and a pocket watch. Accounts differ in how they date early observations and applications, so the sequence is more reliable than treating any one date as definitive. The Horological Society of New York’s recap discusses examples associated with Janvier and Breguet. Horological Society of New York recap.

F.P.Journe dates its first Résonance wristwatch to 2000. The Swiss watch industry retrospective traces subsequent versions: subscription watches in 2000; the first collection series and Ruthenium series in 2001–2002; a rose-gold movement in 2005; a digital 24-hour version in 2010; an analog 24-hour version in 2019; and a new Chronomètre à Résonance in 2020. How F.P.Journe’s wristwatch is arranged

The 2020 design announcement describes one barrel spring powering two movements. A differential distributes energy independently to the two gear trains, each of which has a one-second remontoir d’égalité, a constant-force device. F.P.Journe says this arrangement supplies linear force and assures isochronism through 28 hours. That duration and performance description apply to the announced design and are the manufacturer’s claims, not independent comparative test results. F.P.Journe’s 2020 announcement.

One model-specific example is the earlier Calibre 1499.3, listed by F.P.Journe as produced from 2005 to 2008. Its page describes a manually wound movement, two balances, two time displays, and an autonomy of 40 ± 2 hours. Those specifications belong to that historical calibre and should not be applied to other or later versions. F.P.Journe Calibre 1499.3 page.

Resonance is not the same as a dual-time display

Some versions show two separate times, but a second display does not create resonance. The mechanism is the interaction between the two oscillators; the displays are a separate dial function. A watch can therefore offer two time readings without using coupled balances, while a resonance watch’s defining claim concerns how its balances influence one another. Why adjustment matters—and what the evidence establishes

Coupling alone is not enough: the balances must be brought into a suitable relationship for the described harmonizing effect. The Federation’s 2020 retrospective gives a maximum frequency difference of five seconds per day, cumulated on six positions, for the two balances to harmonize. That figure is its stated tuning constraint, not a general accuracy rating for the complete watch. Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry, 22 October 2020.

The available descriptions establish how F.P.Journe says the mechanism is designed to work, and they document versions and specifications. They do not establish through independent controlled comparisons that a resonance watch necessarily keeps better time than a conventional watch. The sound takeaway is narrower: resonance is a distinctive coupling strategy, and any accuracy benefit must be demonstrated for the specific watch under defined test conditions.
