Its defining feature is a user-adjustable “butterfly rotor” that can suspend automatic winding in sports mode. That connection is about inspiration, not proof that Nadal wore this exact RM 35-03 in competition.
Why the RM 35-03 is linked to Rafael Nadal
Richard Mille names the RM 35-03 for Nadal and places it in the RM 035 collection. The brand says the collection was inspired by the RM 027 Tourbillon watches Nadal wore during tennis matches. Its official description calls the RM 35-03 the collection’s fourth watch. The link is therefore clear in the model’s name and inspiration, but the available sources do not establish that Nadal played matches wearing this specific reference.
The watch’s sporting connection also informs its unusual winding control. Rather than simply accepting whatever winding torque comes from movement, the wearer can alter the geometry of its automatic rotor.
How the butterfly rotor’s sports mode works
Richard Mille says the RM 35-03 took three years to develop and introduced its patented butterfly rotor. In the normal configuration, two weights sit off-center, creating the torque that winds the mainspring as the wearer moves. Pressing the pusher at 7 o’clock moves the weights through 180 degrees. They then balance the rotor, cancelling its winding power. An indicator at 6 o’clock shows whether the rotor is active. Richard Mille’s model page describes the mechanism as a way for the wearer to control winding according to lifestyle and sporting activity.

The Fondation Haute Horlogerie describes the same distinction: normal mode turns arm movement into winding torque, while sports mode balances the rotor so it stops winding. A separate pusher at 2 o’clock selects winding, neutral, or time-setting functions; a hand indicates the selected function. These controls change winding behavior. They are not evidence that the watch is shockproof or guaranteed safe for every sport.

The case dimensions are substantial, so the figures are useful context for anyone considering how the watch might wear. They do not, by themselves, establish how it will fit a particular wrist.

Launch configurations and price context
Launch coverage on December 8, 2021, reported two initial configurations: blue Quartz TPT with a white Quartz TPT caseband, and white Quartz TPT with a Carbon TPT caseband. The reports describe the original launch, not a complete or current list of configurations. Both Time and Watches and Hodinkee reported a US$220,000 launch price in 2021; that is historical context, not a current retail or resale quote.
The Fondation Haute Horlogerie record displays an indicated price of CHF 220,000, but does not state when that price was set. It should not be treated as a dated current offer or converted into a dollar price.

What makes the match—and what it does not prove
The RM 35-03 brings Nadal’s name and the collection’s on-court inspiration together with a practical, distinctive winding feature: a pusher lets the wearer balance the rotor and stop it winding in sports mode. That makes “perfect match” a persuasive design description, not an objective performance verdict. The sources explain the mechanism and brand inspiration; they do not establish exact-model match use by Nadal or an unlimited durability guarantee.
