The lot essay says the green-dial reference launched at Baselworld in 2016, runs on Rolex calibre 4130, and was discontinued in 2023. How the chronograph and tachymeter work
Rolex describes the central chronograph seconds hand as measuring seconds, with the subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock showing elapsed minutes and hours. The bezel works as a tachymeter. In Rolex’s words, its scale “can be used to read an average speed over a given distance based on elapsed time.” The scale is graduated for speeds up to 400 units per hour. In practice you time how long it takes to cover a known distance, such as one kilometre or mile, and read the speed off the scale at the seconds hand’s position. This is Rolex’s own description of the Daytona family, not an independent performance test.
Rolex also states that Daytona cases are 40 mm and guaranteed waterproof to 100 m / 330 ft. That is a family-wide statement; confirm it against the specific watch’s documentation.

Buying a pre-owned 116508
Because the reference is discontinued, any purchase is a secondary-market purchase of one specific watch. Judge that watch, not the reference name.
- Confirm the reference and movement. The reference should read 116508, with a calibre 4130 movement. A listing that quotes 126508 or 4131 specifications is describing a different watch.
- Check the paperwork. Christie’s example came with an international guarantee and presentation materials. That is specific to that lot and does not tell you what any other watch includes.
- Assess condition and seller. Case, bracelet and dial condition, service history and the seller’s authenticity guarantee all matter more than the reference’s reputation.
- Compare like with like. Set an asking price against recent sales of the same reference, year and set of accessories, not against Rolex’s list price for the 126508.
The “John Mayer” nickname
