The Rolex Day-Date 40 reference 228239 is made in 18 ct white gold; reference 228235 is made in Rolex’s 18 kt Everose gold. In the configurations reviewed, the two share the same 40 mm case, fluted bezel, President bracelet, calibre 3255, and core published specifications. The choice between them is principally a choice of metal tone and dial configuration—not a different movement or case size.
What separates references 228239 and 228235?
The reference number tells you which gold alloy you are looking at: 228239 is white gold, while 228235 is Everose, Rolex’s pink-gold alloy. That is the key distinction established by Rolex’s product pages; the technical baseline is otherwise broadly shared.
In appearance, white gold tends to read as a cooler, silvery metal, while Everose has a warmer pink tone. The exact impression depends on lighting and the dial paired with the watch. What do the two Day-Date 40s have in common?
Rolex lists both reviewed references with a 40 mm Oyster case, a fluted bezel, a President bracelet and calibre 3255. The movement is described as a self-winding mechanical manufacture calibre with centre hour, minute and seconds hands, instantaneous day and date, secure rapid-setting and stop-seconds. The manufacturer also specifies approximately 70 hours of power reserve.

These are Rolex-published specifications, not independent test results. The product pages also describe a screw-down winding crown with a Twinlock double waterproofness system and a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with a Cyclops lens over the date. Rolex’s 2024 explanation says the Superlative Chronometer’s tolerated rate deviation for a finished watch is “of the order of −2/+2 seconds per day”; that is the brand’s stated standard, not a comparative accuracy measurement of these two individual watches. How do the gold, bezel and bracelet shape the choice?
White gold on the 228239
The 228239’s white-gold case and bracelet give it a silvery appearance rather than the warm color associated with yellow or pink gold. For a visual comparison, look at the case and bracelet in the same lighting and account for dial color: reflections and dial treatment can change how prominent the metal looks.

Everose gold on the 228235
The 228235’s Everose case and bracelet make the metal color more visibly warm. A Rolex US listing for configuration m228235-0001 pairs it with a sundust dial, but that is one configuration, not a description of every 228235.
Shared design details
Both references use the Day-Date’s fluted bezel and President bracelet. Rolex says the bezel’s fluting originally helped screw the bezel onto the case and ensure waterproofness before becoming an aesthetic signature. When accessed on 2026-10-07, Rolex’s US page displayed $54,200 USD for reference 228235 configuration m228235-0001 with a sundust dial. That dated US page observation is not a universal price for the 228235, and the reviewed 228239 page did not provide a corresponding price. The available information therefore does not support a direct price comparison or a claim about current stock.

Rolex states that Day-Date models have only ever been made from precious metals and that the Day-Date 36 and Day-Date 40 use calibre 3255.
